Summary for Harvey Lichtenstein BAM Hamm Archives 718.724.8150 [email protected] Harvey Lichtenstein President's Records Page Collection Identifier 08_Harvey_Lichtenstein_Colle Dates 1967 – 1999 inclusive Extent 68.09 linear feet Agency History The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), founded in 1861, is a thriving arts center in Brooklyn. Originally conceived as a home for classical music, it quickly broadened to include theater and lectures, and welcomed the star performers of the day. After the original location in Brooklyn Heights was destroyed by fire in 1903, a new theater was built at 30 Lafayette Avenue in Fort Greene, and the BAM campus has now grown to comprise three buildings. Today, BAM is known as an adventurous multi-arts center with world-renowned programming. It is celebrated for its Next Wave Festival in the fall, which presents contemporary experimental performance, and for its spring season of international theater, dance, and opera. BAM also offers a robust roster of film, a comprehensive Education & Humanities program, and serves an important civic function, hosting numerous community events. Historical/Biographical Note Internationally recognized as a driving force behind the performing and visual arts, Harvey Lichtenstein has been a leader in the world of arts administration for 50 years. Beginning with early positions at New York City Ballet and New York City Opera, Harvey returned to his native Brooklyn in 1967 to begin his tenure at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, setting a new course for the institution and helping to change the cultural landscape of New York while gaining an international reputation as a champion of all that is new and progressive in the arts: dance, theater and music. The list of artists he has supported is long and includes John Adams, Laurie Anderson, Pina Bausch, Ingmar Bergman, Merce Cunningham, William Forsythe, Philip Glass, Robert Wilson, Peter Brook, Steve Reich, Ariane Mnouchkine, Twyla Tharp, Jerzy Grotowski and Robert Lepage. In 1999, after 32 years, Harvey stepped down from the leadership of BAM to lead the BAM Local Development Corporation (LDC) in its efforts to establish a cultural district in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. The BAM LDC has now joined with the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership to form a coordinating unit for all development activity in Downtown Brooklyn. • The Political Hamlet According to Jan Kott and Jerzy Grotowski1
Multicultural Shakespeare: Translation, Appropriation and Performance vol. 17 (32), 2018; DOI: 10.18778/2083-8530.17.06 ∗ Wanda Świątkowska The Political Hamlet According to Jan Kott and Jerzy Grotowski1 Abstract: The article presents political interpretations of Hamlet in Poland in the turbulent period of politcal changes between the mid-1950s and mid-1960s. The author discusses the relationships between Shakespeare’s tragedy and Polish political context as well as the influence of audience expectations in the specific interpretations. The selected performances are: Hamlet by Roman Zawistowski (at the Old Theatre in Cracow 1956) and Hamlet Study by Jerzy Grotowski (at the Laboratory Theatre of 13 Rows in Opole 1964). They both were hugely influenced by major commentators of Hamlet, i.e. Stanisław Wyspiański and Jan Kott. The author argues that up-to-date readings of Hamlet, which started with Wyspiański’s study in 1905, flourished in the mid-1950s and mid-1960s when concerning specific political events: the Polish Thaw of 1956 and March 1968, when the Jews were expelled from Poland. Thus Hamlet of that time was updated and must be seen through the prism of political events. Keywords: William Shakespeare, Stanisław Wyspiański, Jerzy Grotowski, Jan Kott, Hamlet, Hamlet Study, Polish Thaw of 1956, March 1968, politics. This article looks at two interpretations of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet and the concepts of updating the tragedy put forward by Jan Kott, and Jerzy Grotowski. It will not investigate their further professional relationship or Kott’s attitude to Grotowski’s later works. The article will only focus on one episode in their careers that took place in Poland in the period between the mid-1950s and mid-1960s.

Yet the latter must be able to play a role as a driving force for conflict resolution and peace building. The arts, and dance in particular, can initiate new perspectives for the future. While performing arts have value in and for themselves, they can engage with societal challenges such as inequalities, migration, conflict and violence, and create a deeper intercultural understanding. The arts can prepare citizens to think critically, act creatively, and foster civic engagement and social change, while at the same time providing a safe space to express their emotions. Dancers For the World (DFW) has demonstrated its power in supporting the most vulnerable, empowering children, women and young adults, and creating protected surroundings to exchange in time of crises.
