On the death of his mother, Lady Charlotte, in 1856, O’Brien inherited the estate of Cahirmoyle, near Rathkeale, in County Limerick. Lady Charlotte had married Sir Edward O’Brien, 4th Bart. in 1799. She was the eldest daughter of William Smith, a solicitor, who had bought the Cahirmoyle estate in 1774. On her father’s death in 1809 she inherited the property. When William Smith O’Brien died in 1864 the estate was inherited by his eldest son William Edward O’Brien (1837-1909) who had married Mary Spring-Rice, sister of the 2nd Baron Monteagle of Brandon, in 1863. She died in 1868. They had three children: (William) Dermod (1865-1945), Ellen Lucy (Nelly) (d. 1925) and (Lucy) Mary (d. 1926). William Edward O’Brien married, secondly, Julia Mary Marshall in 1880. They had four children. The eldest son by the first marriage, Dermod, married Mabel Smyly, 2nd daughter of the Dublin physician Sir Philip Crampton Smyly, in 1902 and, on the death of his father in 1909, he inherited Cahirmoyle. Cahirmoyle was sold by Dermod O’Brien in 1919 and the family moved to Dublin. Mabel O’Brien’s death in 1942 was followed by that of her husband in 1945. The papers The collection was purchased by the National Library of Ireland in December 2000 (Accession 5614).
