Mission • Deliver the most trusted, independent, Irish news service, accurate and impartial, for the connected age • Provide the broadest range of value for money, quality content and services for all ages, interests and communities • Reflect Ireland’s cultural and regional diversity and enable access to major events • Support and nurture Irish production and Irish creative talent Values • Understand our audiences and put them at the heart of everything we do • Be creative, innovative and resourceful • Be open, collaborative and flexible • Be responsible, respectful, honest and accountable to one another and to our audiences 2 HIGHLIGHTS A RTÉ ANNUAL REPORT & GROUP FINANCIAL STATEMENTS 2014 3 CHAIR’S STATEMENT The last year has been one of transition for RTÉ and for its Board. My predecessor, Tom Savage, departed as Chairman after five demanding years. I would like to thank him and the other members of the last Board, the first established under the Broadcasting Act 2009. They set a high standard of governance during some exceptionally difficult years. The new Board took over at a time of economic revival which offers new opportunities, but also new challenges, for RTÉ. For the second year in a row RTÉ will break-even. Despite the €5 million reduction in public funding in the 2014 Budget, and with some growth in commercial revenue, RTÉ returned a modest surplus for a second year, in line with 2013. After the difficult restructuring in 2012, and with the challenge posed by an ever-growing number of competitors in the advertising market, this is noteworthy financial management, and I congratulate the Director-General and his team for it. 4 The new Board contains members of the highest calibre in their various fields. Yet, even during the recession, the creative industries have been growing in importance to the economy. A renewed ambition for RTÉ in Moya Doherty developing new content and programming will directly benefit the Irish Chair creative community generally. RTÉ is the largest direct employer in the sector; it is the largest employer of musicians in Ireland, and the largest commissioner of independent television productions. RTÉ’s involvement in cultural events helps bring audiences to those events. RTÉ is aware of its responsibilities to lead development in this area, which is so important to Ireland’s international image and reputation. RTÉ ANNUAL REPORT & GROUP FINANCIAL STATEMENTS 2014 5 DirecTOR-GENERAL’S Review Many times in my career in RTÉ, I have been fortunate enough to feel genuinely proud of the organisation, the work we all do and the impact it can have. I certainly felt that during 2014. Not just because of the stand out programming, reporting and innovations RTÉ delivered across the year, but also because of the backdrop against which they were made. RTÉ has come through one of the most difficult and turbulent periods in its history. Over the past three years RTÉ has met, head on, the multiple challenges of editorial mistakes, dramatic falls in revenue, new competition and disruptive technology. Faced with these challenges, RTÉ has responded by developing a clear strategy to position the organisation for the long-term. We are now well on the way to evolving from a public service broadcaster to a public service media organisation relevant and essential to the increasingly digital lives of Irish people. The five-year strategy that TR É published in 2013 has set in train a period of change and renewal in RTÉ that continued apace during 2014.

    29th June 2003 Pigs May Fly Over TV Studios By Bob Quinn If Brian Dobson, Irish Television’s chief male newsreader had been sacked for his recent breach of professional ethics, pigs would surely have taken to the air over Dublin. Dobson, was exposed as doing journalistic nixers i.e. privately helping to train Health Board managers in the art of responding to hard media questions – from such as Mr. Dobson. When his professional bilocation was revealed he came out with his hands up – live, by phone, on a popular RTE evening radio current affairs programme – said he was sorry, that he had made a wrong call. If long-standing Staff Guidelines had been invoked, he might well have been sacked. Immediately others confessed, among them Sean O’Rourke, presenter of the station’s flagship News At One. He too, had helped train public figures, presumably in the usual techniques of giving soft answers to hard questions. Last year O’Rourke, on the live news, rubbished the arguments of the Chairman of Primary School Managers against allowing advertisers’ direct access to schoolchildren. O’Rourke said the arguments were ‘po-faced’. It transpires that many prominent Irish public broadcasting figures are as happy with part-time market opportunities as Network 2’s rogue builder, Dustin the Turkey, or the average plumber in the nation’s black economy. National radio success (and TV failure) Gerry Ryan was in the ‘stable of stars’ run by Carol Associates and could command thousands for endorsing a product. I can now say with confidence that our strategy is working. 2014 will be the second year running that RTÉ will achieve a small financial surplus, 6 Radio 1, lyric fm and 2fm, in addition to the station’s own news service. In parallel, online and on mobile we launched a national, international and I can now say with regional news service in Irish for the first time.

Sin é an fáth gur cuid de ghnáthshaol an lae ag muintir na hÉireann é. Bhí 92% de dhaoine os cionn 181 bliana d’aois in Éirinn a bhain úsáid as seirbhís de chuid RTÉ uair in aghaidh na seachtaine, nó níos minice ná sin, i rith na bliana 2015. Is gné bhuntábhachtach den rath atá ar RTÉ an coimisiúnú ó na léiritheoirí neamhspleácha. Oibríodh i rith na bliana 2015 le níos mó ná 100 comhlacht léiriúcháin neamhspleácha a chuir ábhar cláir ar ardchaighdeán ar fáil don teilifís, don raidió agus do na meáin dhigiteacha arbh ábhar Éireannach go smior a bhí ann. Chuidigh a gcuid samhlaíochta sin le RTÉ a dhealú ón lucht iomaíochta i margadh na meán cumarsáide. Cuireann an obair le hearnáil na léiritheoirí neamhspleácha bonn faoi fhostaíocht, chomh maith le héagsúlacht a chur i sceidil an stáisiúin. Táthar ag tnúth le treisiú arís leis an gcomhar idir muid féin agus an earnáil neamhspleách agus muid ag freastal ar an lucht féachana agus éisteachta i rith na bliana 2016.
