At cornerback, senior Tom Larsen (24 tackles, INT, 5 pass breakups) has started for much of his four seasons and is one of the conference’s top cover corners. Senior Dan Casasnovas (37 tackles, INT, 2 kick blocks) returns as a starter and is solid in run support and pass coverage, as well as being a key contributor on special teams. Junior Jamal Henderson is one of the team’s fastest players and will also see a lot of action.

The Pioneers’ defensive linemen will be versatile enough to play anywhere along the line. These words from Rutgers’ head coach Greg Schiano summed it up: “There is no one I can think of who is better to lead the William Paterson program than Mike Miello. William Paterson is getting the best of the best.”

Indeed, Miello already has the Pioneers pegged as a program on the rise in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Instantly, he was able to tap into his recruiting connections around the state, building a strong talent base and working to turn the Pioneers into a contender on the national scene.

“I came here to win championships,” Miello said.

In addition to helping build a successful program at Rutgers the previous four seasons, Miello built Ramapo and Hackensack into high school state championship contenders year after glorious year. Much of his success came at Ramapo, where he was the athletic director and architect of the Green Raiders’ rise to statewide prominence from 1978-2000. In 23 seasons, they won four New Jersey state sectional championships and four Northern Bergen Interscholastic League titles.

As wonderful as winning at Ramapo was, Miello also sent 148 of his players off to play in college. He coached Chris Simms, one of the top quarterbacks in New Jersey prep history who is currently a signal-caller for the National Football League’s Tampa Bay Bucca- neers, as well as wide receiver Rob Milanese, who caught passes from Simms at Ramapo and recently signed with the San Diego Chargers.
