FORUM

31st SIGA 2019 Forum: Bridging The Gap

Brunei Darussalam relies almost exclusively on the oil and gas industry to support its economy and the Bruneian government has repeatedly made efforts to reduce this reliance and diversify. Initiatives with an emphasis on entrepreneurship has been received well by many as part of this diversification process with several success stories.

However, many Bruneians still have the mentality that business is a risky endeavour afforded only by the wealthy and that government jobs are safer - which contribute to Brunei Darussalam having the highest unemployment rate in ASEAN. Although the Government continues to support Micro Small Medium Enterprises (MSME) through better ease of doing business which include creating online applications and faster approvals of permits, entrepreneurs themselves still face unique obstacles attributed to their gender, qualifications or even age.

This forum "Bridging The Gap" for the 31st SIGA 2019 hosted by SSEAYP International Brunei (BERSATU) brings together entrepreneurs from a variety of backgrounds who will not only share these unique challenges and issues, but also how they overcame them. We hope that the voices from these powerful individuals will inspire those of you who may be considering entrepreneurship but are hesitating. We hope that the tales from our visionary youth will help those who have budding ideas but are still uncertain. We hope that the spirit of these determined individuals will help others to find the courage to pave the way to fresher and greener frontiers.

SOCIAL CONTRIBUTION ACTIVITIES

Pusat Bahagia, Department of Community Development, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Pusat Bahagia is a welfare institution established in 1980 with the initiative and cooperation of volunteer workers. Upon its inception, it was just a single class running once a week with only 5 pupils located in a Kampong Ayer (Water village) clinic.

In 1993, Pusat Bahagia in moved to its existing building in Kampong Pulaie. Since then, the organization has gone through many changes and improvements with centres opening in all four districts in Brunei Darussalam.

Participants will be divided into groups and will be doing different activities together with children from these special classes.

ONE VILLAGE ONE PRODUCT

This program was developed in 1993 and is one of the efforts of the Ministry of Home Affairs to motivate communities in a Mukim (cluster of villages) or Kampung (village) to form Consultative Councils of their own in order to help the surrounding community to improve their welfare and economy.

The program aims to provide employment opportunities and increase the abilities of individuals and groups in conducting sustainable socio-economic activities by producing local products or services that are unique to the particular Mukim or Kampung. It also aims to foster a sense of community within the Mukim or Kampong.

For this year’s SSEAYP International General Assembly (SIGA) activity, participants will be divided into five (5) groups and visit 5 sites in the Tutong District. Four (4) groups will visit four (4) different 1K1P venues and one (1) group will go to the Pusat Kegiatan Warga Emas, Tutong (PKWE) - Senior Citizen Activity Centre, Tutong.
