Hoggarth 2012 iii SOCIAL REORGANIZATION AND HOUSEHOLD ADAPTATION IN THE AFTERMATH OF COLLAPSE AT BAKING POT, BELIZE Julie A. Hoggarth, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2012 This dissertation focuses on the adaptations of ancient Maya households to the processes of social reorganization in the aftermath of collapse of Classic Maya rulership at Baking Pot, a small kingdom in the upper Belize River Valley of western Belize. With the depopulation of the central and southern Maya lowlands at the end of the Late Classic period, residents in Settlement Cluster C at Baking Pot persisted following the abandonment of the palace complex in the Terminal Classic period (A.D. 800-900). Results from this study indicate that noble and commoner households in Settlement Cluster C continued to live at Baking Pot, developing strategies of adaptation including expanding interregional mercantile exchange and hosting community feasts in the Terminal Classic and Early Postclassic periods. -

New South Wales Biosecurity Amendment (Schedules to Act) Regulation 2017 under the Biosecurity Act 2015 His Excellency the Governor, with the advice of the Executive Council, has made the following Regulation under the Biosecurity Act 2015. NIALL BLAIR, MLC Minister for Primary Industries Explanatory note The objects of this Regulation are: (a) to update the lists of pests and diseases of plants, pests and diseases of animals, diseases of aquatic animals, pest marine and freshwater finfish and pest marine invertebrates (set out in Part 1 of Schedule 2 to the Biosecurity Act 2015 (the Act)) that are prohibited matter throughout the State, and (b) to update the description (set out in Part 2 of Schedule 2 to the Act) of the part of the State in which Daktulosphaira vitifoliae (Grapevine phylloxera) is a prohibited matter, and (c) to include (in Schedule 3 to the Act) lists of non-indigenous amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles in respect of which dealings are prohibited or permitted, and (d) to provide (in Schedule 4 to the Act) that certain dealings with bees and certain non-indigenous animals require biosecurity registration, and (e) to update savings and transitional provisions with respect to existing licences (in Schedule 7 to the Act). This Regulation is made under the Biosecurity Act 2015, including sections 27 (4), 151 (2), 153 (2) and 404 (the general regulation-making power) and clause 1 (1) and (5) of Schedule 7. MAHS Care Sheet Master List *By Eric Roscoe Care sheets are often an excellent starting point for learning more about the biology and husbandry of a given species, including their housing/enclosure requirements, temperament and handling, diet , and other aspects of care. MAHS itself has created many such care sheets for a wide range of reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates we believe to have straightforward care requirements, and thus make suitable family and beginner’s to intermediate level pets. Some species with much more complex, difficult to meet, or impracticable care requirements than what can be adequately explained in a one page care sheet may be multiple pages. We can also provide additional links, resources, and information on these species we feel are reliable and trustworthy if requested. If you would like to request a copy of a care sheet for any of the species listed below, or have a suggestion for an animal you don’t see on our list, contact us to let us know! Unfortunately, for liability reasons, MAHS is unable to create or publish care sheets for medically significant venomous species. This includes species in the families Crotilidae, Viperidae, and Elapidae, as well as the Helodermatidae (the Gila Monsters and Mexican Beaded Lizards) and some medically significant rear fanged Colubridae. Those that are serious about wishing to learn more about venomous reptile husbandry that cannot be adequately covered in one to three page care sheets should take the time to utilize all available resources by reading books and literature, consulting with, and working with an experienced and knowledgeable mentor in order to learn the ropes hands on. -

Teresa Kido Cruz1* Tania Zuñiga Marroquín1 Antonio Kido Cruz2 Abstract Even though there is a valid discourse on environmental protection in our country, few efforts have been made in this area, especially when it comes to wildlife. Part of the reason is due to the lack of information and studies on the subject. The objective of this paper is to contribute to our knowledge about the perception of three groups of wild fauna, namely birds, mammals and reptiles in the lower region of the Papaloapan Basin, held by three different groups of the local population: producers, students and university professors. To do this, we used different data analysis techniques: canonical correlation, use indicators and the cost-benefit method. The results yielded 88 identified species, of which 10 lived in the region in the past but are currently reported as non-existent. The most prominent uses are as food and as pets. Among the species with the highest economic value, the crocodile and parrots stand out. Keywords: Perception, use indicators, birds, reptiles, mammals. Caracterización de la fauna silvestre en Loma Bonita, Oaxaca y su valoración desde la perspectiva local Resumen Aun y cuando el discurso de protección ambiental está vigente en nuestro país, son pocos los esfuerzos que se han realizado en este ámbito, especialmente cuando de fauna silvestre se trata. Parte de la razón obedece a la falta de información y estudios sobre el tema. El presente trabajo tiene como propósito contribuir al conocimiento sobre la percepción de tres grupos de fauna silvestre: aves, mamíferos y reptiles en la región baja de la cuenca del Papaloapan, llevado a cabo por tres diferentes grupos de la población local: productores, estudiantes y profesores universitarios. -

Chapter 11 Amphibians and Reptiles Pierre Charruau, Jose´ Rogelio Cedeno-Va~ ´zquez, and Gunther Kohler€ Abstract The three Mexican states of the Yucata´n Peninsula have been relatively well explored for herpetofauna, when compared with other states of the country. However, most studies on the herpetofauna of the Yucata´n Peninsula have focused on their diversity, taxonomy, and species distribution, and less on their ecology, behavior or conservation status. The major conservation efforts have focused on sea turtles. Although some conservation programs exist locally for crocodiles in the north of the peninsula, to date conservation strategies have mostly been restricted to the designation of protected areas. With 24 species of amphibians and 118 species of reptiles, the Yucata´n Peninsula harbors 11.5 % of national herpetofauna diver- sity, and 19 % of species are endemic to the peninsula. Reptiles and amphibians are two major globally threatened groups of vertebrates, with amphibians being the most threatened vertebrate class. Both groups face the same threats, namely habitat loss and modification, pollution, overharvest for food and pet trade, introduction of exotic species, infectious diseases, and climatic change. Unfortunately, almost none of these issues have been investigated for key populations in the Yucata´n Peninsula. For amphibians, studies exploring the presence of the chytrid fungus (Batracho- chytrium dendrobatidis) and the effects of climatic change are badly needed to understand the specific factors that negatively affect populations in this area. In general, conservation efforts for reptiles and amphibians in the Yucata´n Peninsula need to include environmental education, scientific investigation, and law enforce- ment and application. -
