    01/03/1997 BAM `draft' Ong, Yong for training A. Devaraj IN an unexpected move, the BA of Malaysia (BAM) named Nusa Mahsuri discards Ong Ewe Hock and Yong Hock Kin in the national team together with former national players P. Kantharoopan and Wong Ewee Mun. BAM president Datuk Dr Fadzil Che Wan explained that the duo have been invited to train with the national squad until they decide on their future. Said Dr Fadzil: "The executive committee decided so since both have indicated interest to train with the national team." He added that the two players are free to remain with the national team as long as they choose. "They are free to leave whenever they want." The other players named in the men's singles are Lo Ah Heng and Wong Choon Hann. Kantharoopan and Wong were dropped by BAM last year but proved themselves in the three-day trials recently where Wong emerged the winner and Kantharoopan finished third. Lo finished second. Wong, who was in Jakarta for the Asian Cup, was exempted from attending the trials. BAM also named Kwan Yoke Meng, Chen Changjie and Suffian Abu Bakar as the singles coaches for both the men and women. There were no surprises in the men's doubles squad where five pairs were named instead of four. The fifth pair are Tan Kim Her and Lee Chee Leong. The doubles coaches named are Chen Kang, Chen Hongyong, Soh Goon Chup and Rina Tan Sui Hoon. BAM also picked two backup squads for the men. Chief coach and director of coaching Morten Frost said he expects the players to push each other and work as a group." The Backup A squad comprise five singles players and three doubles pairs while the Backup B have five singles players only.

Full Tone to Sound Feminine: Analyzing the Role of Tonal Variants in Identity Construction Abstract Tone neutralization in Standard Mandarin requires syllables in a weakly-stressed position to be destressed and toneless (Chao, 1968), yet such a process is often incomplete in some Mandarin dialects, e.g., Taiwanese-accented Mandarin (Huang, 2012, 2018). For instance, the metrically weak syllable bai in míng2bai0 (‘to understand, clear’) is usually destressed in Standard Mandarin but fully realized as a rising tone (míng2bái2) in non-standard varieties. Recent studies have observed that Standard Mandarin speakers, especially young females, tend to performatively adopt this supraregional linguistic feature to index their “cosmopolitan” and “youthful” social personae (Zhang 2005, 2018). The current study provides a spoken-corpus analysis to address how the “cute” social persona is indexed in such prosodic variables.

    Chinese and Global Distribution of H9 Subtype Avian Influenza Viruses Wenming Jiang., Shuo Liu., Guangyu Hou, Jinping Li, Qingye Zhuang, Suchun Wang, Peng Zhang, Jiming Chen* The Laboratory of Avian Disease Surveillance, China Animal Health and Epidemiology Center, Qingdao, China Abstract H9 subtype avian influenza viruses (AIVs) are of significance in poultry and public health, but epidemiological studies about the viruses are scarce. In this study, phylogenetic relationships of the viruses were analyzed based on 1233 previously reported sequences and 745 novel sequences of the viral hemagglutinin gene. The novel sequences were obtained through large-scale surveys conducted in 2008-2011 in China. The results revealed distinct distributions of H9 subtype AIVs in different hosts, sites and regions in China and in the world: (1) the dominant lineage of H9 subtype AIVs in China in recent years is lineage h9.4.2.5 represented by A/chicken/Guangxi/55/2005; (2) the newly emerging lineage h9.4.2.6, represented by A/chicken/Guangdong/FZH/2011, has also become prevalent in China; (3) lineages h9.3.3, h9.4.1 and h9.4.2, represented by A/duck/Hokkaido/26/99, A/quail/Hong Kong/G1/97 and A/chicken/Hong Kong/G9/97, respectively, have become globally dominant in recent years; (4) lineages h9.4.1 and h9.4.2 are likely of more risk to public health than others; (5) different lineages have different transmission features and host tropisms. This study also provided novel experimental data which indicated that the Leu-234 (H9 numbering) motif in the viral hemagglutinin gene is an important but not unique determinant in receptor-binding preference.

    12/01/1998 New system set to groom local coaches K.M. Boopathy THE inventive ability of BA of Malaysia (BAM) director of coaching Morten Frost came into practise in September last year as the national team adopted a new training system which looks effective in many ways. The national team have been divided into several groups with a combination of senior and back-up squad players. Each group will be guided by a seperate coach. That does not mean that the chief coach's burden will be reduced as Frost will draw the overall training programme and he is in charge of the men's singles Group 2. According to Frost, the system will help prepare the local coaches for the future. "I'm not going to be here forever. The local coaches will be groomed to take over the helm when I leave after serving my contract," said Frost. His four year contract ends in the year 2000. There are four local coaches in the national team. Kwan Yoke Meng and Koay Kar Lin are with the men while Rina Tan and Suffian Abu Bakar are in charge of the women's team. Frost has increased the emphasis on matchplay which is the norm in the European style of training. Men's singles Group 1: Ong Ewe Hock, Foo Yoon Keang, Siew Yan Wai, Yeoh Kai Bin.     國立臺灣師範大學英語學系 碩 士 論 文 Master Thesis Department of English National Taiwan Normal University 臺灣國語口說和書寫中文的英語化現象 Englishization of Oral and Written Mandarin in Taiwan 指導教授：張妙霞 Advisor: Dr. Miao-Hsia Chang 研 究 生：魏肇慧 Chao-Hui Wei 中 華 民 國 一零一 年 七 月 July, 2012 摘要 本研究旨在探討口語和書面中文西化的現象。過去諸多關於中文西化的研究 指出此現象不僅侷限於詞彙和構辭層面，甚至影響句法結構。基於過去文獻所歸 納之重要西化句法結構，本研究進一步分析和比較二十年來台灣書寫中文的句法 西化程度和使用情形。此外，過去研究皆宥於書面中文而未有系統且完整地討論 口說中文的西化現象，因此本研究特別探討口說中文之西化，並和書寫中文之結 果相較。 書面資料取自於新新聞雜誌和天下雜誌；至於口說資料則採用談話性節目， 包括今晚誰當家、王牌大賤諜、關鍵時刻和夢想街 57 號。結果顯示書寫中文方 面之西化在二十年前即已很顯著，故和現今書面中文差異不大。而口說中文的西 化情形亦很明顯，顯示西化句法結構並不限於翻譯或書寫，而深入至一般日常生 活，成為中文語法的一部分。 此外，比較書面和口說中文後，發現西化句型的分布有極顯著之不同；而造 成差異的原因主要歸因於口說和書寫此兩種不同表達方式的特色，譬如口說的即 時性和互動。值得注意的是，西化句型在書面和口說中文的分布和其對應之英語 句型在書面和口說英文的分布相一致，此結果進一步支持這些結構確為英語化之 句型。 關鍵字：英語化，語言接觸 i Abstract The Englishization of Mandarin has been a hot issue since 1950s. Previous studies have pointed out plenty of Englishized syntactic structures in Mandarin. However, the latest linguistic study of Englishization of Taiwan Mandarin was conducted in 1994. Considering the rapid development in these twenty years, it is interesting to observe the development of Englishization nowadays. In addition, since Englishization of the oral Mandarin has never been systematically studied before, the present study aims to investigate the frequency and distribution of Englishization of Taiwan Mandarin in writing and also speaking. The written data used in the current research are from two magazines, 新新聞 Xinxinwen ‘The Journalist’ and 天下 Tienxia ‘Common Wealth’. The oral data are collected from four talk shows, 今晚誰當家 Jinwan shei dangjia ‘Who Hosts Tonight’ and 王牌大賤諜 Wangpai da jiandie ‘Top Spy’, 關鍵時刻 Guanjian shike ‘Crucial Moment’ and 夢想街 57 號 Mengxiangjie 57hao ‘No.57 Dream Street’. The results reveal that the Englishized structures suggested in the literature have already localized as part of Chinese grammar at least early since twenty years ago.
