    CHAPTER II REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE This chapter is the explanation about the theoretical description which is used in the research. There are four major points of this chapter; theoretical description, previous studies, conceptual framework and movie review. 2.1 Theoretical Description In this part, the researcher presents two important parts of this research, pragmatics and speech act. Pragmatics is scope of linguistics which concern about sentence meaning. It has 6 branches, and one of them is speech act. Speech act is the utterances which are performed by the speaker in the conversation. 2.1.1 Pragmatics 2.1.1.1 Definition of Pragmatics Semantics and pragmatics are scope of linguistics which study about meaning, but those two fields are different. Semantics focuses on meaning as a diadic relation whereas pragmatics relate with meaning as a triadic relation. In pragmatics, the study of meaning is related to the speaker or the user of language in that present time (Leech, 1983:5-6). In line with Leech, Yule (1996:3) explains that pragmatics has four definitions or scopes. The first, pragmatics deals with speakers’ meaning of communication. The second, pragmatics is the study about contextual meaning or the interpretation of what people mean in the context. Then, the third is the study of how the language more communicated that it’s said. The last definition of pragmatics is the study about the expression whether it is said or not of relative distance of communication. Griffiths (2006:1) adds “Pragmatics is concerned with the use of these tools in meaningful communication”. The word tools in his sentence refer to tool in of meaning which is known by people as a language.

    https://lthj.qut.edu.au/ LAW, TECHNOLOGY AND HUMANS Volume 2 (2) 2020 https://doi.org/10.5204/lthj.1581 Before the Law: Limits, Malice and The Immortal Hulk Neal Curtis The University of Auckland, New Zealand Abstract This article uses Kafka's short story 'Before the Law' to offer a reading of Al Ewing's The Immortal Hulk. This is in turn used to explore our desire to encounter the Law understood as a form of completeness. The article differentiates between 'the Law' as completeness or limitlessness and 'the law' understood as limitation. The article also examines this desire to experience completeness or limitlessness in the work of George Bataille who argued such an experience was the path to sovereignty. In response it also considers Francois Flahault's critique of Bataille who argued Bataille failed to understand limitlessness is split between a 'good infinite' and a 'bad infinite', and that it is only the latter that can ultimately satisfy us. The article then proposes The Hulk, especially as presented in Al Ewing's The Immortal Hulk, is a study in where our desire for limitlessness can take us. Ultimately it proposes we turn ourselves away from the Law and towards the law that preserves and protects our incompleteness.     THOR Written by Ashley Miller, Zack Stentz, & Don Payne FADE IN: On the blackness of SPACE, beautiful and mysterious, strewn with a billion stars. Atop a building, a wrought-iron sign -- a HAMMER-WIELDING BLACKSMITH -- spins listlessly in the wind as a swirling breeze kicks up. A hint of what's to come. 1 EXT. PUENTE ANTIGUO, NEW MEXICO - NIGHT 1 1 A main street extends before us in this one-horse town, set amid endless flat, arid scrubland. A large SUV slowly moves down the street and heads out of town. 2 EXT. SUV - NIGHT 2 2 The SUV sits parked in the desert. Suddenly, the roof panels of the SUV FOLD OPEN. The underside of the panels house a variety of hand-built ASTRONOMICAL DEVICES, which now point at the sky. JANE FOSTER (late 20's) pops her head through the roof. She positions a MAGNETOMETER, so its monitor calibrates with the constellations above. It appears to be cobbled together from spare parts of other devices. JANE Hurry! We hear a loud BANG followed by muffled CURSING from below. Jane offers a hand down to ERIK SELVIG (60) who emerges as well, rubbing his head. JANE (CONT'D) Oh-- watch your head. SELVIG Thanks. So what's this "anomaly"¬ù of yours supposed to look like? JANE It's a little different each time. Once it looked like, I don't know, melted stars, pooling in a corner of the sky.
