Get to know the Gods and Goddesses! - Interactive Story Mischievous Loki, Sif and her Golden Hair When reading the story get the girls to say and do the following actions. Have a run through of them before so they know, you can even split into groups and have each group say one thing so itʼs less for them to remember. Thor - Loud angry noises like thunder, e.g shout and stomp feet Hair - “Swish swish” and shake hair slowly from side to side to show it off. Loki - Giggle and mischievously tap fingers together (making triangle shape) Odin - “Father of all” in deep voice Dwarfs - “Clink clinkʼ Make actions as though forging/hitting metal Gold - “Wow” whispered and wiggling fingers in an arch shape. There are many Viking Gods and Goddesses and I shall tell you a story about some them but before I begin I shall introduce them to you. First we have Thor, the God of war! He was a loud and angry God, with his hammer to command the thunder. Now, despite Thorʼs anger and thirst for war he had a soft side, a lovey-dovey side when it came to his wife Sif. She was the goddess of the Harvest and she was very beautiful with long, flowing, golden hair. Another God in this story is Loki, known as the trickster God. He was so full of trickery he tricked his way into becoming a God! FInally last but not least we have Odin. The main God, who knows everything that goes on thanks to his 2 crows who report back to him everyday. They all live in Asgard, the land of the Gods and now that you know who they are I shall begin a story that started on what seemed like any other day... Now, as you know Sifʼs hair was long, her hair almost reached the ground. It took a lot of looking after, it was thick and flowed all around her. She had washed her hair and combed her hair, Sif never had a bad hair day. She lay down on the grass her hair shining brightly in the sun as she waited for it to dry and waited for Thor to come home. Suddenly she began to feel sleepy, her eyes started closing, she couldnʼt stay awake any longer and she fell into a deep sleep. Loki watched... Loki waited... Loki had a mischievous plan! He knew how much Thor loved that golden hair, and how proud Sif was of it, he smiled a wicked smile. This was his chance to cause havoc and take something from Thor, not just anything, but Thorʼs greatest treasure. He creeped slowly up to Sif who was still sleeping, took out his scissors and began to chop, snip and cut at Sifʼs beautiful golden hair. When he had finished Sifʼs head was bare, there was not one tiny single hair! After a while Sif awoke from her slumber. She felt cold but the sun was still shining, she lifted her head.. it felt very light. She panicked. She reached up to feel her hair, but yes, thatʼs right, there was nothing there!! She ran inside and checked to see if it was really true, when she saw she sobbed and sobbed, making it rain in the corn fields and the other Gods wondering what was happening with Sif. Thor had been away from Asgard, he was looking forward to seeing Sif, but when he got home she was not there. He called her, no answer,

I would also like to greatly thank my friends in Iceland for all the memorable times we have shared and my supervisor Gísli Sigurðsson and Torfi Tulinius, the director of the M.A. programme in Medieval Icelandic Studies, for academic guidance when and where necessary. ABSTRACT (ENGLISH) The thesis illuminates stanzas 104-110 in Hávamál as a motif of initiation into sacral kingship by a comparison to the very same theme within Celtic mythology. Using Gísli Sigurðsson‟s premise that the oral background to much eddic poetry was more open to Gaelic influence than normally assumed and the inherent conservatism of the pagan Irish sacral kingship tradition I will focus on the following points: through a detailed analysis and comparison of a selected 11th century Old Irish text I illustrate that salient mythological aspects in Hávamál point to an initiation into sacral kingship underlying the text. Furthermore, in a similar manner to that which Gro Steinsland has recently provided for certain other eddic poems I attempt to show that these stanzas in Hávamál were written by a Christian editor/scribe using the hieros gamos motif on behalf of a Norwegian royal lineage, with Gunnlöð as an ancestress of Hörðaland.

  • 7 CHAPTER II REVIEW of RELATED LITERATURE This Chapter Is The
CHAPTER II REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE This chapter is the explanation about the theoretical description which is used in the research. There are four major points of this chapter; theoretical description, previous studies, conceptual framework and movie review. 2.1 Theoretical Description In this part, the researcher presents two important parts of this research, pragmatics and speech act. Pragmatics is scope of linguistics which concern about sentence meaning. It has 6 branches, and one of them is speech act. Speech act is the utterances which are performed by the speaker in the conversation. 2.1.1 Pragmatics 2.1.1.1 Definition of Pragmatics Semantics and pragmatics are scope of linguistics which study about meaning, but those two fields are different. Semantics focuses on meaning as a diadic relation whereas pragmatics relate with meaning as a triadic relation. In pragmatics, the study of meaning is related to the speaker or the user of language in that present time (Leech, 1983:5-6). In line with Leech, Yule (1996:3) explains that pragmatics has four definitions or scopes. The first, pragmatics deals with speakers’ meaning of communication. The second, pragmatics is the study about contextual meaning or the interpretation of what people mean in the context. Then, the third is the study of how the language more communicated that it’s said. The last definition of pragmatics is the study about the expression whether it is said or not of relative distance of communication. Griffiths (2006:1) adds “Pragmatics is concerned with the use of these tools in meaningful communication”. The word tools in his sentence refer to tool in of meaning which is known by people as a language.

  • Skaldic Poetry: a Short Introduction
Skaldic Poetry: A Short Introduction We’re going to begin with a little story. It’s about the origin of poetry and it starts with spit. Back in the days of myth, two bands of gods, the Æsir and the Vanir, waged a heavy war. They eventually forged a peace agreement and, in order to seal the pact, they each spat into a huge vat, comparable in size to the great well of Memory which lay at the roots of the World Tree. What happened next was a wonder to all. As the spittle intermingled, the liquid began to move and shape itself into a living being. Óðinn, chief of the Æsir, named the being Quash. It turned out that Quash was the wisest of the wise, but he was restless and went roaming far and wide to quench his thirst for knowledge. One day, when Quash was Journeying in the east, he came across the dwarves FJalar and Galar. FJalar invited him to their home and they seemed nice enough, so Quash accepted the invitation. Maybe it was by accident, or intention, or in the heat of an argument that it happened, but the outcome was certain alright: Quash was killed at the hands of FJalar and Galar. Perhaps Quash was not so wise after all. FJalar and Galar acted fast. They drained the blood from Quash’s pale corpse, blended it with the sweetest of honey, and then left the mixture to brew in a barrel. The mead they created was so intoxicating that anyone who had even the tinniest sip would utter honey-sweet words and poetry would rush from their mouth like a fierce river.

The underside of the panels house a variety of hand-built ASTRONOMICAL DEVICES, which now point at the sky. JANE FOSTER (late 20's) pops her head through the roof. She positions a MAGNETOMETER, so its monitor calibrates with the constellations above. It appears to be cobbled together from spare parts of other devices. JANE Hurry! • Do Thor and Odin Have Bodies? Superperception and Divine Intervention Among the Old Norse Gods
religions Article Do Thor and Odin Have Bodies? Superperception and Divine Intervention among the Old Norse Gods Declan Taggart School of English, O’Rahilly Building, University College Cork, Cork, Ireland; [email protected] Received: 11 July 2019; Accepted: 2 August 2019; Published: 6 August 2019 Abstract: In Old Norse mythology, gods like Freyja, Odin, and Thor are usually characterized as human-like creatures: they walk and ride animals, eat, grow old, and even die. Was there more to conceptions of Old Norse gods than those anthropomorphic representations? This article presents evidence that the gods of early Scandinavia were sometimes thought of as superperceiving and able to act in ways that defied the limitations of a physical body. It engages with and challenges theological correctness, a prominent theory in the Cognitive Science of Religion, to elucidate the sources of Old Norse religion and the cognitive and contextual foundations of the representations of gods encountered there. Following an examination of the mechanisms through which Old Norse gods’ superperception and disembodied action were narrativized and rationalized, the article concludes with a discussion of the consequences of non-anthropomorphic representations of the gods for understanding Scandinavian worshippers’ everyday religious life. Keywords: Old Norse mythology; Old Norse religion; theological correctness; anthropomorphism; monitoring; Cognitive Science of Religion; Thor; Odin 1. Introduction When I was very young, I was taught in school how I should wait to receive the Eucharist in church. I was told that I should bow my head and not look up because, if I did, I would see Jesus Christ hovering near the church’s ceiling, watching and listening to my prayers, and that he would be angry if I caught sight of him.

  • Thor, the Superhero
THOR, THE SUPERHERO Height: 6'6" Weight: 640 lbs Hair: Blond Eyes: Blue ORIGIN Thor is the son of Odin, the ruler of the extra-dimensional realm of Asgard, and the Elder Goddess Gaea, the personification of Mother Nature. Raised in Asgard, the goddess Frigga served as Thor's mother, and Thor grew up with Loki as his step-brother. His father Odin had Mjolnir, a mystical hammer enchanted by magic and made of Uru, forged for Thor but decreed it would be given to him only after he'd proven himself worthy of the right to possess and wield it by becoming a noble and honorable warrior of the highest order. Odin enchanted the, weapon so it could only be lifted by someone, including but not limited to Thor whom proved worthy by meeting these requirements. After years of training and accepting different quests to prove he was worthy of wielding the hammer, Thor still could not lift Mjolnir. However, he was only able to raise it after hearing about the kidnapping of Sif. Thor ignored the direct commands of his father and went into Odin's treasure room to retrieve the hammer. He found himself able to lift it with ease because he desired to save his friend instead of searching for personal glory. Thor spent several centuries adventuring, undertaking many quests, fighting battles, facing many foes and performing countless heroic deeds before eventually becoming Asgard's greatest warrior and protector. Thor's first love was the goddess Sif. Their relationship started when both were kids and it's had several ups and downs; sometimes seeming to end forever only to be renewed time after time.
