Seasons Greetings to everyone

in our group of villages. Keep safe and well.

Light-up a Tree It may be more difficult to mark Christmas this year, so we thought we could show we are still very much celebrating Christmas by lighting-up trees, perhaps in the windows of homes, perhaps outside in gardens or outside churches where possible.

An important request from the Lay Chair of the Barnham Broom Group of churches

May I wish all our readers continuing good health as the country struggles to gain control of the coronavirus pandemic. It seems likely that worship in our churches will again be severely curtailed or prevented altogether over the next few months, and I take this opportunity to express the gratitude of us all, at the tremendous efforts made by our clergy team of Tim and Louisa in both maintaining online services throughout the year, and in offering much needed pastoral support to many people in our Group of parishes. However, on a secular level, in my capacity as Lay Chair of the Group I must report that we will not be able to pay our Share of Diocesan expenses in full this year. Individual churches may struggle to cover even their own running costs. Some have remained closed for much of the year and even where services have been held, numbers attending have had to be limited because of social distancing rules. Fund raising events have been similarly curtailed. As a result, although many people have been generous with their online giving, total income received by the Group is well below normal. May I ask you to urgently consider either a one-off donation or a standing order for regular giving, either to your local village church or directly to the Group treasurer. Details of how you can do this are set out below.

With grateful thanks, Philip Richardson

With thanks to Joan Welsby for writng the Editorial for November and not minding it to be held over for the December issue. ‘Fight the good fight with all thy might!’ (Rev.John Samuel Bewley Monsell 1863)

During these last few weeks, with the continuing Coronavirus situation – R rates rising and falling, another lockdown imposed, government rules changing at times on a weekly basis, and NHS staff battling to care for the sick and save lives, the words of the hymn: ‘Fight the Good Fight’ kept popping up in my head. Given that I wrote this editorial for the November issue of Group News, my mind also turned towards Remembrance Day and all the memories and thoughts of the people fighting different battles that that conjures up. Two very different types of waging war: but looking through the words of the famous hymn, there are many similarities from which to draw strength.

Looking for explanations on how to fight the good fight of faith it seems that people often ask such questions when they are going through difficult times and are wondering how they can be faithful to God in the face of opposition, oppression and adversity, which seems to describe what the world in general is going through right now. At times, it is very difficult to remain positive.

However, reading through the verses of the hymn, powerful words of inspiration and encouragement stand out: Fight the good fight; Lay hold on life; Run the straight race; Life with its way; Trust and thy trusting soul shall prove; Cast care aside; Faint not nor Fear – every verse full of advice! A veritable set of instructions to help us get through many of life’s adversities and to ensure that we focus on words that are just as relevant today as they were when Paul wrote to instruct Timothy, a soldier, often engaged in warfare (1 Timothy 6.12). As Paul says, anything that is done by faith will require a fight of some sort in order to win – living a life in faith isn’t always an easy passage. God calls us to concentrate our efforts and stand firm to achieve our goals.

As the battle to ward off this dreadful pandemic continues, with all its attendant worries and fears, we remember the words from 1 Peter 5.7: ‘Cast all your anxieties on Him because He cares for you’, and we can take courage from the words of Moses to Joshua (Deuteronomy 31.8): ‘The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.’

And finally, the last two lines of the hymn give us the only instruction we really need: Only believe, and thou shalt see That Christ is all in all to thee. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ GARVESTONE METHODIST CHURCH Road, NR9 4QT. Rev.Dr Louisa writes ‘A Christmas Reflection’

Last Christmas, I spoke at a service about what happens when Christmas doesn’t go as planned: when we ruin the turkey or have a family argument or (as happened to me once) the fire alarm goes off in the middle of a big Christmas service and the whole fire department shows up. Little did I know that this year the kind of Christmas we will be having is not the kind that anyone would have planned. At the end of a very long and very strange year, we’re all still adjusting to difficult circumstances, and a Christmas under these circumstances will be hard.

But I think it’s important this year to remind ourselves that Christmas is not something that depends on us to happen. Yes, we all will try hard to observe as many of our usual traditions as we can, and we all will do our best in the strangeness that is 2020 to make Christmas special in some way. But the message we hear every year, the hope we look to each time, is that Christmas is really about what God does for us. Christmas is a gift given to us, and it doesn’t depend on our own plans and circumstances. No matter what is happening or where we find ourselves this year, the gift of Christmas is that God is there, too. Emmanuel - God with us - means that we are not alone, especially when times are hard.

So we may have to be a bit creative this year in how we decide to mark Christmas as special. We may have to come up with some new traditions and postpone some old ones. But one thing that 2020 has shown us is the strength of our communities to withstand difficulty and the care we are capable of showing for each other. And when we love and look after one another, we are doing all we need to do to celebrate Christmas. So this year especially, may God grant us all the peace and the joy that is God’s gift to us this season, and may we all have a Happy Christmas.

BARFORD Christmas will be very different this year. We will miss our Carol, Crib and Christmas services along with seeing friends and family. Hopefully things will look better in 2021. We wish everyone in Barford and our group of parishes a peaceful Christmas. Stay safe and remember to look out for your friends and neighbours.

Christmas Cards: Church Christmas cards are available, again designed by talented artist Kate Baylay. Cards are £1 each or 6 for £5. If you would like to purchase some, please phone Lisa on 01603 758151.

WRAMPLINGHAM

What a strange year this has been. Due to Covid-19 we have had to cancel our Easter Day service, the Village Picnic, the Annual Cricket Match, the Remembrance Day Service at the War Memorial and now our lovely Carol Service. All these events are opportunities for the village to meet and catch up, so let’s hope next year we can do that. Despite the restrictions, our beautiful Church has stayed open for everyone. We have even managed to have a few services, all be it that they are very different in lots of ways. Finding funds for the upkeep of our medieval Church would normally come in part from donations, public collections at services and other fundraising events like concerts. As we have been unable to raise funds in the normal way, we are struggling to fulfil our commitments. We therefore need to find ways of raising extra funds and would be very grateful if you would consider making a donation, however small or large. You can do this in two ways, either by transfer to the Church bank account (Wramplingham PCC, sort code 20-99-08, a/c No. 40966533) or by delivering a cheque or cash to Carol Fairhurst at Hall Cottage or Caroline Elliott at Top Barn. All donors have the chance of winning a Christmas hamper as a thank you. We would be very grateful for any help to support our little Church which is very much part of this village.

BARNHAM BROOM Barnham Broom hopes to see Father Christmas! As we are unable to hold our “Christmas Capers” event this year, Barnham Broom Community Fund, together with the Neighbourhood Cafe, have arranged for Father Christmas to come to Barnham Broom and drive through the village on Saturday December 19th. Father Christmas and his helpers will bring some Christmas cheer, fun for the children and there could also be treats for everyone. Good old Santa! We are also asking residents to put decorations and lights in their gardens to brighten up the village and encourage people to walk around to see them, and keep healthy, ready for Christmas lunch! Watch for more details and timings in due course, when Father Christmas organises his diary. This event depends on current covid-19 regulations. ————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-- Barnham Broom Fuel Allotment Charity The Trustees are pleased to advise progress that has been made in reviving this ancient charity since they were appointed in January of this year. They have held 9 meetings to consider their responsibilities in relation to the management of the Barnham Broom Fen, which is the only asset of the Trust, the generation of income, and the use of funds to meet the needs of individuals and the community of the village. The Fen: The Trust has granted a joint lease to Sam and Rebecca Hill, and Steve Davidson. We are greatly indebted, and thankful, to Andy Hind who has continued to work with Friends of the Fen to clear scrub, remove Himalayan Balsam and to create 3 new ponds. A gate has been erected at the entrance to the Fen from the track. It is not possible to grant open access at the moment. Meetings have been held with Natural England, Norfolk Wildlife Trust, Farming and Wildlife Advisory group to work out the best way forward .The Trustees are aware that there are a number of residents who have expressed interest in supporting the Charity, and welcome this. We expect to make contact soon. Charitable Giving: A number of grants have been made to individuals and to Community activities. The trustees are keen to learn of other needs with which they may be able to help. A bank account has been opened with Co-operative Bank, and charitable donations to the Charity are welcomed. Governance: The Trustees are Kate Hayes, Richard Jewson, Barbara Worland and Revd Tim Weatherstone The trustees can be contacted on 01362 858 021, or by email [email protected] ————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————- Fen Trust/ Bell Inn Vouchers Please note that the vouchers will no longer be redeemed after December 31st so if you still have one, do use it.

CARLETON FOREHOE Rowan Tree: Thank you to Gillian and Val for kindly sourcing and planting a Rowan Tree in the extension graveyard. Hopefully it will provide a good habitat for our wildlife and a place of peaceful shade and contemplation for visitors. December Service: At the moment our next service remains scheduled to take place on Sunday December 20th and will be Morning Worship at 9.30am. Currently we are able to safely accommodate a maximum of 30 persons so please contact either of the Churchwardens to reserve your place. Christmas Services: We know that these will be greatly missed, but we very much look forward to being able to welcome you back next year. Meanwhile, Happy Christmas wishes to everyone in the village - keep safe and well. A Happy Birthday to Chris Cross who had a significant birthday in November! We hope that he is now fully on the road to recovery after his recent visit to hospital.

KIMBERLEY

Our Christmas service this year will be Holy Communion on December 20th commencing at 9.30am. If you would like to attend this service, please let your church wardens know so that you can be allocated a seat. The Parish Council would like you to know that although they cannot hold their usual meetings, they are available for help with village matters. The Parish Clerk, Catherine Moore (01493 253041) will pass your queries on to the councillors. Please see page 6 for all the contact details. With the rising number of home deliveries now taking place, please do make sure your house numbers and house names are easily visible to help ensure your parcels can be delivered to your door.

HARDINGHAM We are very sad to record the death of Rosemary Arthurton. Rosemary moved into the village in 1966 with her late husband, Maurice. She worked as a member of the “land girls” for Hardingham Farms. The Arthurtons will be remembered by many people who bought eggs from them, and enjoyed looking at their collection of assorted animals and poultry. Together they ran the Croquet competition at the annual Fete. Rosemary was also an original member of the village Book Club. Our thoughts go to her son and daughter and their families. Rosemary will be sadly missed. Memorial 100 Club: The final draw for this year has taken place. The winners are: The Mower family, William Edwards, Steph George, Ian and Julia Chapman-Wright, Adrian Rondeau and Donna Hurlock. Thank you to all who have paid next year’s subscriptions. If you have not paid yet, please send cash or cheque to Alison Gibb (Denmark House, Hardingham NR9 4EG), cheques payable to Hardingham Memorial Hall, or pay by BACS to: Hardingham Memorial Hall, Sort Code 20-99-08, Account No: 20446092. Thank you. Light a tree for your community: As we will not be able to hold our usual Carol Service, it is suggested that we should light up a tree in our gardens for Christmas. Please choose a tree that can be seen from the road. It is hoped that this will bring a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel for us all. Any questions, contact Alison Gibb ([email protected]). Memorial Hall and Play Area: Sadly, the Hall has had to close again after re-opening. The Play Area has also been closed. We will open up as quickly as possible once we are free to do so. Please bear with the Committee and respect the closure.

THUXTON

We are looking for someone to deliver Group News to the properties along the B1135 starting at the Hingham Road junction, and ending just past the former clematis nursery. We normally have 11 issues a year (February to December) and this would probably take less than 30 minutes of your time. There is no footpath so cycling or by car would be best. If you can help please ring Heather Kennedy on 01362 850451. Thank you.

CRANWORTH with LETTON, SOUTHBURGH & WOODRISING

Our thoughts and prayers are with Greg, Angela and Alex at this sad time.

REYMERSTON From Julie: “Thank you to all those who have sent get well wishes after my 'little holiday' in hospital. I am now taking things a little easier, but on the road to recovery.” Thank you to all those who helped clear, trim and cut back the hedges, and best of all those who came to help plant the trees in the new 'Remembrance Garden' behind the church. Thanks also to the Parish Council, in particular Graham Smith and his team. Lest we Forget: Poppy Appeal. Ann Taylor wishes to warmly thank those in Reymerston who remembered.

Christmas Greetings to everyone. It will be so different for us all, but the Christmas message is still the same.

We must all live in hope for the future, when Covid will be under control. Christmas won’t be as we know it this year, Many people will be on their own. We must all pray for those who are lonely And have no loved ones around Because however bleak the dark clouds are, The sun will shine again. Olive Barber from Barford.
