The Editorial is written by Rev. Dr Louisa Pitman:

Right now, we are in the middle of the season of Lent. Most people associate this season in the Church’s calendar with giving something up. We might try to curb our sweet tooth with a ban on chocolate, for instance, or sign off social media for a little while and put down our phones. This isn’t necessarily a bad practice… Occasionally doing without some luxury can help us remember that it really is a luxury and we shouldn’t take it for granted. We can very quickly forget this if we have easy and unrestricted access to pretty much anything we want any time. But this association with self-denial can make Lent seem like a rather negative season that no one looks forward to very much. These days, society generally forgets about Lent and carries on as usual, looking forward to spring and starting to think about what to plant in the garden. But I think when we set Lent aside as too depressing or too austere, we miss an important opportunity.

The original point of this season was a reminder to Christians that we regularly need to step away from all that distracts us, and diverts our attention and refocus on God, the source of our life and our hope. We set aside luxuries, not because they are bad or wrong in themselves, but because they can often be the distractions we need to get away from for awhile in order to do this. And for this season, for these forty days, we have an opportunity not just to get away from distraction but by doing so to turn our attention back to the God who is always ready to welcome us.

And when we do that, we can gain so much - a reminder that we’re not alone and a source of hope when life seems at its darkest. Here at the end of winter with the signs of the coming spring starting to appear, Lent is our reminder that there is no better opportunity to turn our attention back to God as we look forward to the promise that comes with Easter.

GARVESTONE Sincere condolences go to the family of Dr Sybil Cator who passed away peacefully on February 9th. Sybil was always a great supporter of the church, along with her late husband, John. She will be remembered for her great sense of humour, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Work on the Church: the church PCC would like Garvestone residents to know about planned work on the church. To complement the excellent facilities the Village Hall offers, the church wants to change the space at the rear of the church to be a small, convenient and flexible community space for residents. As part of the first phase of work, the tower and rear west walls need to be dried out, with additional drainage to be installed below the tower. Diocesan permission has already been obtained, the architect has drawn-up plans and a contractor has been chosen. The church is now setting-about raising the approximately £15,000 required to do this. The next phase will perhaps involve the removal of one or two pews and the creating of a partially insulated space with heaters. Obviously some form of kitchen and a toilet would be desirable. Judith and the PCC would love to hear the views of residents.

REYMERSTON Group News deliverer: Is there somebody willing to deliver Group News in the Letton Road area? It can be a pleasant 15 minute walk with about 12 Group News’. It is the Reymerston end of the Letton Road beginning with the residence next to the Industrial Estate. Please contact Roger Walpole for further details: 01362 820284.

Many thanks to all who came to our service at Candlemas taken by the Venerable Arthur Hawes.

We hope to make a new set of stitched canvas Altar Kneelers. We have the canvas, the wools and some designs. All we need are some people to help us stitch them! Canvas work is plain and simple cross stitch. There are people to help if you have not done this before. It is planned to hold a stitching meeting once or twice a month with coffee and cake. If you are interested please contact Julie on 01362 820284 or email:- [email protected]

HARDINGHAM HARDINGHAM PERMISSIVE ACCESS Over the last 20 years some farmers have offered and been paid for providing permissive access over their land under previous Stewardship Schemes. This payment has helped cover mowing the grass in summer as well as paying for public liability insurance, etc. However the new scheme which Hardingham Farms joined on January 1st this year, no longer includes permissive access. Many farmers therefore have stopped providing access and have ploughed up their grass margins. Others have sought payments from their Parish Councils to continue offering access. Hardingham Farms had 14,187 metres of Permissive access, and legally this has now come to an end. However we have decided to maintain all current access without seeking payment from Parish Councils, so this will be our gift to the Community, provided, and this is non-negotiable, that dogs are kept on leads and access is taken only during daylight hours. The decision taken by Hardingham Farms will be reviewed regularly, and could be revised at anytime. Mothering Sunday service on March 22nd at 11am: This will be a joint service held at Cranworth church. All very welcome. Memorial Hall, Saturday March 7th: Please come and help tidy up around the Memorial Hall. Coffee and Bacon butties will be served. If 10 people turn up for an hour, we get 10 hours work done! The Memorial Hall Centenary, Saturday May 16th: If you would like to be involved by helping on the day or beforehand, please contact Alison Gibb 01953 850606 or [email protected] Hardingham W.I. meet at the Memorial Hall at 7.30 p.m. on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. New members are welcome. Contact Jenny Naish on 01953 852575 or [email protected]
