With thanks to Philip Richardson for the Editorial:

In 2019 I published a book about the likely changes in the food and farming industry over the next few years in response to climate, environmental and social pressures. As we know, 2020 has proved a time of considerable and unwanted change to all of our lifestyles because of the Covid-19 virus. Change of any kind, particularly if it is too big and too fast, is unsettling, even though it can sometimes brings benefits which we only recognise in hindsight. But because it upsets what we are accustomed to, we often try to resist it, or pretend that it does not affect us, or we allow it to worry us.

Mental health problems have affected many people since the virus began to change our lives. There is much we can do to help, as individuals or as groups. Over-reliance on the State to solve our problems is, perhaps, a defining characteristic of our age. In previous times communities pulling together to face hard times was all that was available. Disease, wars and natural disasters were commonplace then, and to give perspective it is helpful to reflect how our ancestors dealt with the consequences on their lives. Many fell back on their faith in God and in the human values of ‘good neighbourliness’ expressed in the Gospels.

Today, in our material society which puts a price on everything, except on our personal relationships, we also need to reflect on what is truly of value: Good neighbourliness implies giving comfort in times of trouble, valuing family and friends, always acting with honesty and politeness, offering love for and charity to others, especially those in need.

We enter a new year knowing the whole world faces a long period of dramatic change, partly because of the pandemic and its consequences, but more particularly the challenge of climate change and all the ramifications that it has for the way we live our lives in future. There will be enormous challenges for politicians and economists to surmount, but we must not forget the pressures on individuals to change, which will cause stress and will require us all to be better neighbours to one another. ————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————— If you feel that you could help to support SUPPORTING OUR VILLAGE CHURCHES your local Church. Barnham Broom & Upper Yare Group Charities Committee Caroline Elliott writes: At our Zoom meetings, we have agreed to carry the two charities, YANA (You are not alone) and the Priscilla Bacon Hospice onto this year, and maybe even next year. We hope to hold a Car Treasure Hunt within our Group on June 6th, where we can still socially distance if necessary. More details will follow as we move closer to the date. The other event for your diaries is November 27th, The Christmas Rural Market, where each Village is given the opportunity to run a stall to raise money for their Church and the charities. If you can knit, sew or make anything and you need something to do over the next few months, let your Church Wardens know as I am sure they will be very grateful. On behalf of the committee, I would like to thank you for your support in the past and hope that we get an opportunity to see you again at our events this year.

A small Carol service was held at the Church on December 20th kindly led by David and Ann Goddard with beautiful singing from Helen Vaughan and her daughter Katie in the choir area. There was also a chance for us all to join in to sing a Carol outside the Church in the sunshine!

Many thanks to those who have contributed to Church funds following the message asking for support in December's Group News.

Thanks also to all who have had Christmas lights outside in their gardens to cheer us all up. Janet Moore's fir tree was a particularly lovely feature, visible for much of the village or when passing on the road to Wymondham.

Unfortunately several houses in the village were flooded on Christmas eve when the water levels from the pond and river rose to the highest level seen for decades. This was most distressing and difficult for those residents, particularly as it followed an extended power cut. We hope the damage has been rectified..

We said a very sad farewell to Joy Upfold who passed away on November 12th with a private service at the Church during the November lockdown. Our thoughts and prayers go to her husband Robin and their lovely family who would like to thank those who were so kindly supportive during the last difficult months, and who donated to the charities in Joy's name.

CARLETON FOREHOE As always, St Mary’s remains open for private prayer. To arrange access, please contact either of the Churchwardens, Ivan or Jane, whose details can be found under Village Contacts on Page 5. E.H. GARDEN SERVICES

Digging Weeding The Rat Run: When the western link and the new junction Hedge Trimming at Wood Lane is opened, it is anticipated that traffic through the village will double. There are a number of actions General garden maintenance that can be taken, and Parish councillors Val Evans and at competitive rates. Jane Fraser will soon be asking residents for their views on the mitigation measures needed. Tel: 01362 858086 Please do get involved.

BARNHAM BROOM Barnham Broom Community Fund: Thank you to everyone who supported our Christmas Event. Many people came outside to see Father Christmas and to sing along with the D'Capo choir. Thanks also to the Neighbourhood Cafe for delivering all the cakes around the village. We know this was all much appreciated. We also thank Keith and Jill Tucker for the loan of their trailer, the use of their barn, and also for donating the Christmas Tree at the crossroads. It looked lovely with the decorations added by the village children. This, and all the wonderful lights decorating your houses really cheered the village up after such a difficult year. Thank you all. Father Christmas sent a message to say how much he enjoyed coming to Barnham Broom! A grateful thank you to all the people who have put time and effort into maintaining Barnham Broom church and Churchyard over the past year. The work is not always noticeable, but it makes a big difference. We will hopefully start again in February, weather and Covid-19 restrictions permitting. So if you would like to join us for an hour or two, do get in touch. Barnham Broom WI news: Our speakers will attend via Zoom in January and February. Brigitte Webster will be speaking about Tudor cooking and related topics in January. In February the Rev’d Dr Louisa Pittman will tell us about her life as a Curate. If you would like to join in the Zoom meeting, please get in touch with Anne Nelson or Liz Jelley for details.

SAMARITAN’S PURSE SHOE BOX APPEAL 2020 Ros Self writes “Thank you everyone who contributed gifts KIMBERLEY and packed boxes. 19 boxes were collected. Look out for this years Shoe Box appeal in September”. The defibrillator has been installed in the redundant phone box on the Green with the help of a donation of £800 from previous village fete profits and grants secured by the Parish council. By the time you read this, it should be commissioned and ready for use. Also, the village history board should be restored back into the box soon. WHINBURGH & WESTFIELD We send condolences to Cyril Woodhouse and family on the sad loss of Joyce. The family lived in Westfield for many years. Joyce was a cook at Eckling Grange and was famous for her lovely cakes which she made for Coffee Mornings at Old Hall Farm in aid of Westfield Church. She is sadly missed by all who knew her. We also send condolences to Trudy Sutton on the sad loss of her husband, Dr. Anthony Sutton. The Suttons supported both churches and Anthony will be remembered by many for playing the organ at each church.

Alison Gibb asks Hardingham residents, “How Well Do You Know Your Village?” A QUIZ ! Why not explore parts of the village you do not know and take your exercise at the same time as fund raising for the Memorial Hall! We have devised a quiz which can be completed by walking around the village on public and permissive footpaths and roads. The quiz will be available from February 1st and the closing date will be March 15th. To obtain a copy of the quiz, please contact Alison Gibb ([email protected]) and it will be emailed to you. Please make a donation of £2-50 to the Memorial Hall, preferably by BACS. Account Name: Hardingham Memorial Hall. Sort Code: 20-99-08. Account No: 20446092. Completed quiz sheets should be sent to: Denmark House, Hardingham. NR9 4EG or email Alison. Prize for the highest score!

HARDINGHAM Please find Alison Gibb’s latest idea on Page 7! Christmas service: Hardingham church was able to welcome worshippers to a service on Christmas day which was also broadcast live on the internet. Thank you to all who helped decorate the church, and put up the Christmas trees. Thank you also to Hardingham Farms for supplying two trees this year, one of which was outside and lit up each evening in support of Light a Tree for the community. Carol Singing: On December 23rd a socially distanced community carol singing was arranged by Alison Gibb on the playing field outside the Memorial Hall. However, it rained! Hidden under umbrellas, 32 intrepid singers turned out, and with lighting from the Remembrance Beacon, we all had a jolly good sing with music accompaniment provided by Jonathan. The collecting bucket raised £65 for St Martin’s Housing Trust. One of the many good comments received later: “This evening was one of the craziest things that has happened for ages, and one of the best”. Thank you Alison!

The Church 100 Club: Subscriptions are due for 2021. Please contact Jane Howard 01953 851215 [email protected] if you would like one or more tickets, £20 each. It is a great way to help support our village church. Winners of the December Draw are: Dr and Mrs Green, Mr and Mrs Gibb, Mr and Mrs Duthie, Miss S Foster, Mr and Mrs Pounder and Mr and Mrs W Edwards. Thank you for taking part. Memorial Hall 100 club: This is fully subscribed! Thank you to all our supporters. The December draw winners were: Jane and Charlie Cooley, Suzanne Bedford, Henry Edwards, Alasdair Duthie, Fran Harrold, Carl and Tanya Moyden, Richard Burke, Amanda Green and Stuart Gollands.

THUXTON and GARVESTONE Please also see Reymerston news below.

We are looking for someone to deliver Group News to the properties along the B1135 starting at the Hingham Road junction, and ending just past the former clematis nursery. We normally have 11 issues a year (February to December) and this would probably take less than 30 minutes of your time. There is no footpath so cycling or by car would be best. There is also a request for a volunteer to deliver to properties in the vicinity of Thuxton church. If you can help please ring Heather Kennedy on 01362 850451. Thank you.

CRANWORTH with LETTON, SOUTHBURGH & WOODRISING

We were lucky to be able to have a Christmas Day Service in Cranworth Church. Numbers had to be restricted but there were twenty three of us, socially distanced. We gathered to sing a few Carols outside in the Churchyard when it promptly decided to rain! but undaunted we sang our way through three carols and retired inside for the rest of the service. We are locked down again but hope to have our next service on Feb 28th. We plan to open our plant stalls again, so if your thoughts turn to gardening in the next few months, please plant a few seeds or divide a few plants to give to us.

REYMERSTON Graham Smith, Parish Councillor writes: Parishioners from Garvestone, Reymerston and Thuxton have been working together over recent months to create a Remembrance Space in the meadow behind St Peter’s Church, Reymerston. LOCAL PAINTER AND DECORATOR A walking trail links the three Churches in the parish. The project was completed just before Remembrance Day Peter Jones and commemorates 26 servicemen from the three villages who gave their lives in the Great War of 1914-1918. Interior & Exterior Each has been recognised and remembered by the Free Quotations and Advice planting of a tree at the site.
