The September Editorial is written by Joan Welsby:

‘Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart and you’ll never walk alone.’ ‘Carousel’, Rodgers and Hammerstein

So often these days, we hear about the problems of loneliness, for people of all ages and in all walks of life. In today’s world, the pace of life often seems to be so frenetic, that people struggle to find time and space for themselves, let alone time to be able to offer support and company to others. For many older people, living alone and unable to get out and about, and with families perhaps living at a distance, a sense of loneliness and isolation is almost an inevitability. But it is by no means only the elderly who are affected in this way.

We hear more and more of children and young people experiencing similar feelings, despite being surrounded by others – family, school friends or work colleagues. In fact, at any age, many people will admit, if asked, to having felt very alone at certain times in their lives – I am one of them. Of course, having some ‘alone’ time is very important for all of us, but that is markedly different from actually feeling lonely and lost, and the effects of this can contribute to an increased likelihood of mental health issues arising and sometimes, tragically an increased risk of suicide. As we all know, many methods of communication these days are by text, email, Facebook, Instagram or whatever, but do not have a human face-to-face interaction and are therefore impersonal.

For those of us with a strong faith, however, we have the knowledge that the Lord is with us: ‘So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.’ (Isaiah 41:10) and I have always felt comforted by the words of the poem: ‘Footsteps’ which have resonated with me and given me strength at times in my life when I have felt very lonely for various reasons. That thought, that when things are most difficult, it is then that the Lord carries you until you are able to cope again on your own is a powerful message. It also guides us to feel that perhaps, we could all, if necessary help to ‘carry’ someone for a while who is in need of support and comfort.

I have written previously about how lucky we all are to be a part of the Barnham Broom and Upper Yare Group of 15 – whichever of the churches we attend, there will always be a warm welcome, either from the clergy, churchwardens or others in the congregation and I for one always leave feeling inspired, loved and spiritually uplifted – a great start to the week!

Let’s hope that we can spread this warmth and support as we go about our daily lives and make sure that others don’t have to ‘walk alone’.

HARDINGHAM Hardingham church was full for John Dann’s service of Thanksgiving on Wednesday July 10th. John and Liz moved from Hill Farm, Barford to Hardingham 8 years ago and soon got involved in Hardingham village life. John had farmed at Barford all his life, but had many other interests including the Norfolk Military Vehicle Society of which he was Chairman for a time. John loved all wildlife and was a member of the Kimberley Gun Club. After retiring from farming John did some part time Game Keeping for friends. John was a reliable and helpful friend to many people and will be greatly missed. We send our condolences to Liz his widow, and to Katie and Lisa their two daughters.

The Memorial Hall Committee would like to thank the residents of Beeches Lane and Plough Lane who have cut the grass around the Play Area and generally kept the area tidy throughout the Summer. We really do appreciate your hard work, and so do the users of the Play Area. If anyone else is willing to help with this task, please contact Alison Gibb on 01953 850606. A key for the Tennis Court can be purchased from the key holders or Alison Gibb – cost £3-50. The key in the key pad on the Memorial Hall has gone missing several times this summer which proves very frustrating for the next user! PLEASE remember to return the key when you have finished playing.

An Organ Recital will take place in Hardingham church at 2pm on Saturday September 28th from 2pm. There will be a refreshment stall at the church. Offers of help or cakes will be gratefully received. Please contact Alison Gibb for further details. 01953 850606 or [email protected]

Christmas Market: Once again Hardingham are doing a Craft Stall which can include jams, preserves and chutneys as well as more traditional crafts. Donations for the stall will be gratefully received and also offers of help on the day. Please contact Alison Gibb (as above) for further details.

The Trustees of the Hardingham Fuel Allotment Charity invite applicants from needy Students living in Hardingham for financial assistance towards their Educational costs. Any person in higher or further Education who wishes to be considered, please apply to Mr M. Gibb, Denmark House, Hardingham, NR9 4EG or to [email protected]
