INTRODUCTION CONCEIVE the joy of a lover of nature who, leaving the art galleries, wanders out among the trees and wild flowers and birds that the pictures of the galleries have sen¬ timentalised. It is some such joy that the man who truly loves the noblest in letters feels when tasting for the first time the simple delights of Russian literature. French and English and German authors, too, occasionally, offer works of lofty, simple naturalness; but the very keynote to the whole of Russian literature is simplicity, naturalness, veraciousness. -
The Shoes of Fortune
The Shoes Of Fortune By Neil Munro The Shoes of Fortune CHAPTER I NARRATES HOW I CAME TO QUIT THE STUDY OF LATIN AND THE LIKE, AND TAKE TO HARD WORK IN A MOORLAND COUNTRY It is an odd thing, chance—the one element to baffle the logician and make the scheming of the wisest look as foolish in the long run as the sandy citadel a child builds upon the shore without any thought of the incoming tide. A strange thing, chance; and but for chance I might this day be the sheriff of a shire, my head stuffed with the tangled phrase and sentiment of interlocutors, or maybe no more than an advocate overlooked, sitting in John's Coffeehouse in Edinburgh—a moody soured man with a jug of claret, and cursing the inconsistencies of preferment to office. I might have been that, or less, if it had not been for so trifling a circumstance as the burning of an elderly woman's batch of scones. Had Mistress Grant a more attentive eye to her Culross griddle, what time the scones for her lodgers, breakfast were a-baking forty years ago, I would never have fled furth my native land in a mortal terror of the gallows: had her griddle, say, been higher on the swee-chain by a link or two, Paul Greig would never have foregathered with Dan Risk, the blackguard skipper of a notorious craft; nor pined in a foreign jail; nor connived, unwitting, at a prince's murder; nor marched the weary leagues of France and fought there on a beggar's wage. -

NABOKOV Vladimir
Vladimir Nabokov PALE FIRE BERKLEY BOOKS, NEW YORK To Vera Contents http://www.en8848.com.cn/『原版英语』 1 Foreword 13 Pale Fire A Poem in Four Cantos 43 Commentary 205 Index This reminds me of the ludicrous account he gave Mr. Langton, of the despicable state of a young gentleman of good family. "Sir, when I heard of him last, he was running about town shooting cats." And then in a sort of kindly reverie, he bethought himself of his own favorite cat, and said, "But Hodge shan't be shot: no, no, Hodge shall not be shot." JAMES BOSWELL, the Life of Samuel Johnson Foreword Pale Fire, a poem in heroic couplets, of nine hundred ninety-nine lines, divided into four cantos, was composed by John Francis Shade (born July 5, 1898, died July 21, 1959) during the last twenty days of his life, at his residence in New Wye, Appalachia, U.S.A. The manuscript, mostly a Fair Copy, from which the present text has been faithfully printed, consists of eighty medium-sized index cards, on each of which Shade reserved the pink upper line for headings (canto number, date) and used the fourteen light-blue lines for writing out with a fine nib in a minute, tidy, remarkably clear hand, the text of his poem, skipping a line to indicate double space, and always using a fresh card to begin a new canto. The short (166 lines) Canto One, with all those amusing birds and parhelia, occupies thirteen cards. Canto Two, your favorite, and that shocking tour de force, Canto Three, are identical in length (334 lines) and cover twenty-seven cards each. -

Even from twenty miles out and ten thousand feet up—on approach to Denver International Airport’s runway 17R—both pilots of the Gulfstream IV could clearly see the red and blue flashing lights of the entourage on the ground at about one o’clock, beginning to snake westward down Pena Boulevard. The late November air was cool, crisp, and cloudless. A full moon bathed the flat plains below, and the Rockies jutting heavenward to the right, with a bluish tint and remarkable visibility. -

No Risk Disc
Nona zingt het know. Een indrukwekkend debuut. Introduction: Talking/Having Sex
parallax,2002,vol. 8, no. 4, 1– 3 Introduction: talking/having sex KurtHirtler,Ola Stahl&Ika Willis In issue 17of the Vertigo comic Transmetropolitan ,SpiderJerusalem wakes upin bed with his assistant, Yelena: ‘What happened?’he asks himself. ‘Well, obviously,I know what happened’. Butwhen she wakes up,Y elena insists –repeatedly– that ‘nothing happened’. ‘I’msticky’, Spiderargues; ‘ Something must have happenedto make me sticky’. ‘Nothinghappened. Nothing at all. Nothing. Nothing!’Yelena reiterates, though,in increasingly largeand messy lettering. 1 If sex is nothad, then, nothing happens,it would seem. This commonplace enough formulationnonetheless perhapsdemonstrates the potentialenormity ofthe task which this issue of parallax has set itself in takingon the title having sex – a word which shouldbe read here bothin the Butleriansense of‘ biological’sex as a dimorphismproduced as the e Vect ofcompulsory heterosexuality andenforced by beingcast as prediscursive in relationto gender, and in the sense of‘ sexual intercourse’as anactivity similarly circumscribed byheteronormativepresumptions aboutwhat itis to‘ have sex’. (These preliminaryand tentative denitions will, of course,be fucked with inthe course of having sex.) Nothing happened ,as asynonym for sex was not had ,beginsto make visiblethe intricate conjunctions ofdesire, signi cation, reproduction, evolution, technology, familialstructures, ‘nature’..., which can always besummonedwhen the term ‘sex’is deployed;it hints ataparticularunderstanding of‘sex’as that which makes itpossiblefor something, anything, everything tohappen. Adams Dissertation
“ONE LEG IN ONE, AND ONE LEG IN THE OTHER”: REFLECTIONS OF VERNACULAR MUSICIANS AS MUSIC EDUCATORS By Mark C. Adams A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Music Education—Doctor of Philosophy 2017 ABSTRACT “ONE LEG IN ONE, AND ONE LEG IN THE OTHER”: REFLECTIONS OF VERNACULAR MUSICIANS AS MUSIC EDUCATORS By Mark C. Adams With a purpose of improving the experiences of vernacular musicians who want to become music educators so that more vernacular music-making can occur in K-12 music settings, this study explored the lived musical experiences of two vernacular musicians who successfully became music educators. The two grand tour problems of this study were: 1. To describe how two vernacular musicians navigated their undergraduate music education programs. 2. To describe if/how their vernacular musicianship contributed to their practice as music teachers. Ethnographic techniques were used within the framework of a multiple narrative case study to present the viewpoints of two participants, Carrie and Harrison (pseudonyms). Both were vernacular musicians prior to pursuing degrees in music education. The two participants’ stories revealed that they felt like they were living in two musical worlds. In their undergraduate experiences, participants felt their Western classical abilities were more highly valued than their vernacular musicianship skills, and they did not feel fully supported by faculty musically. In their teaching lives, their vernacular music-making backgrounds manifested through aural learning and rote teaching, creating, and their classroom environment. Participants experienced feelings of being an impostor during their undergraduate experiences, which, particularly for one participant, created fear and anxiety.
