New Hollywood As Political Discourse
CAPTURING TURMOIL: NEW HOLLYWOOD AS POLITICAL DISCOURSE by DANA ALSTON A THESIS Presented to the Department of Cinema Studies and the Robert D. Clark Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts June 2018 An Abstract of the Thesis of Dana Alston for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the Department of Cinema Studies to be taken June 2018 Title: Capturing Turmoil: New Hollywood as Political Discourse Approved: _______________________________________ Dr. Erin Hanna This thesis is an argumentative close analysis of themes, aesthetics, and political meanings within three New Hollywood films. It emerged out of an interest in the films of the 1960s and 70s and the changes within that era’s film industry. Those changes granted young, educated filmmaker opportunities to helm studio-driven projects, weaving material into their narratives that would have been impossible in a system ruled by the Hollywood Production Code. The era also included significant social and political unrest, and the films therein reflect that reality. In this project, I perform content analyses for three films within the New Hollywood movement — Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Dog Day Afternoon (1975), and Nashville (1975) — in order to understand how films in the movement used themes of celebrity, violence, and oppression to act as a form of discourse. All three films employ on-screen violence to complicate the audience’s initial assumptions of characters, and each film critiques the social and political issues of its time through this violence. For each analysis, I discuss several sequences’ mise-en-scène — the arrangement of elements within the entire frame — and connect them to broad socio-political ideas. -
A Large Crowd Gathers for the Deceased Jeff Elliot's Encore
A Large Crowd Gathers For the Deceased Jeff Elliot’s Encore Performance It was a pretty big story that Jeff Elliot had come back from the dead. That might sound like an understatement, what with the general lack of real life zombies out there. But he wasn’t a zombie. He had just come back from the dead, at least for a little while. As it turned out, it was a short second run for him, though there were certainly enough witnesses to prove he had been around for a little while. Obviously when the world found out, this strange little case became very big. The greatest scientific minds swept through St. John’s to try to prove this all actually happened, religious zealots declared the event a sure sign of the apocalypse, and a new crop of hotlines surfaced claiming you too could contact your loved one for a short time through them ($5.99 a minute, other long distance charges may apply). But this story is not about the fallout. This story is about that day he returned, and what he did with that little bit of extra time he had somehow staked out for himself. See, Jeff wasn’t a big deal at all prior to his death – he was a Newfoundland based musician who played fairly idiosyncratically and generally mixed with the blur that is the St. John’s music scene. Before he died at age 28, he could regularly be seen on “the deck,” near bars like CBTGs and Distortion and The Bull and Barrel, or smoking outside The Ship between sets, or fighting with Ron Hynes down at The Rose and Thistle. -

Gutierrez 111 Acknowledgments This thesis could not have been possible without the ongoing support of my parents, Laurie and John Biundo, who from an early age provided me with the opportunity to read a seemingly endless supply of books, and the encouragement to keep exploring my own creativity. Several friends have read drafts of these works and helped to shape them to the forms in which they are finally presented here. They are Blaine Counter, Brendan Cleak, Caryn Sandoval, Jordan Rodriguez, and Emily Warner. I’d be remiss if I did not acknowledge the invaluable support from the English Department faculty at California State University, East Bay. Professors Stephen Gutierrez, Jacqueline Doyle, and Susan Gubernat not only provided me the classroom opportunities, but the personal encouragement to give me confidence. I also owe a special debt of gratitude to Professor Eileen Barrett, who first encouraged me to consider graduate school in the first place. iv Table of Contents Acknowledgments Fiction ........................................................................................................................1 -
South Pacific
THE MUSICO-DRAMATIC EVOLUTION OF RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN’S SOUTH PACIFIC DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By James A. Lovensheimer, M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2003 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Arved Ashby, Adviser Professor Charles M. Atkinson ________________________ Adviser Professor Lois Rosow School of Music Graduate Program ABSTRACT Since its opening in 1949, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Pulitzer Prize- winning musical South Pacific has been regarded as a masterpiece of the genre. Frequently revived, filmed for commercial release in 1958, and filmed again for television in 2000, it has reached audiences in the millions. It is based on selected stories from James A. Michener’s book, Tales of the South Pacific, also a Pulitzer Prize winner; the plots of these stories, and the musical, explore ethnic and cutural prejudice, a theme whose treatment underwent changes during the musical’s evolution. This study concerns the musico-dramatic evolution of South Pacific, a previously unexplored process revealing the collaborative interaction of two masters at the peak of their creative powers. It also demonstrates the authors’ gradual softening of the show’s social commentary. The structural changes, observable through sketches found in the papers of Rodgers and Hammerstein, show how the team developed their characterizations through musical styles, making changes that often indicate changes in characters’ psychological states; they also reveal changing approaches to the musicalization of the novel. Studying these changes provides intimate and, occasionally, unexpected insights into Rodgers and Hammerstein’s creative methods. -

This talented young man won the prestigious Calgary Stampede Talent Show last summer but what was surprising to many was he took his prize money of $10,000 and donated it all to the local drop-in centre. He was touched by the stories he was told by a few people experiencing homelessness he had met one night prior to the contest’s finale. His infectious originals have caught the ears of many in the industry that are now assisting his career. He was honoured to receive 'The Spirit of Calgary' Award at the inaugural Vigor Awards for his generosity. Hudson will soon be touring Canada upon the release of his first single on national radio. INTRODUCTION CONCEIVE the joy of a lover of nature who, leaving the art galleries, wanders out among the trees and wild flowers and birds that the pictures of the galleries have sen¬ timentalised. It is some such joy that the man who truly loves the noblest in letters feels when tasting for the first time the simple delights of Russian literature. French and English and German authors, too, occasionally, offer works of lofty, simple naturalness; but the very keynote to the whole of Russian literature is simplicity, naturalness, veraciousness. -
Tanya Tucker
Tanya Tucker │Biography │ One of country music’s greatest legends, Tanya Tucker, has just released her much anticipated new CD, My Turn, on Saguaro Road Records. On this new album Tucker takes classic country songs originally recorded by the all time great male legends of the time and turns the tables, giving classics such as “You Don’t Know Me” and “Oh, Lonesome Me” a powerful reconstruction from a woman’s point of view. Only 13 when her provocative “Delta Dawn” caused a nationwide stir and became a Top 10 country hit, Tucker has built one of the most successful and compelling careers in music. Considered one of the very few females of the “outlaw” country movement, she holds a Grammy award, two Country Music Association awards, Two Academy of Country Music awards, and three CMT Awards. 23 of her albums have landed in the country Top 40 chart since her 1972 debut, and she has amassed 10 #1 country singles, 33 that have reached the Top 5, and 41 in the Top 10. Always reinventing herself, Tanya again became a media darling in 2005 as the star of her own television reality series, Tuckerville. The primetime series was a huge hit for TLC, generating the cable network’s highest Neilsen ratings ever, and guaranteed the show’s return in 2006. Having sold over 50 million records over the last three decades, country music icon Tanya Tucker is among the all-time best selling female vocalists in country music. “Surprisingly mature at a very young age, Tanya Tucker continues to grow today, taming and conquering tunes long assumed to be a man’s territory. -

BOUND A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE DIVISION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI‘I AT MĀNOA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN ENGLISH MAY 2018 By Ivy R. Kim Thesis Committee: Shawna Yang Ryan, Chairperson Susan Schultz Daphne Desser CRITICAL INTRODUCTION Home. I explored this idea for the first time in an autobiographical work I wrote as an undergraduate student for a creative writing course. I wrote a collection of moments about growing up after having immigrated to Hawai‘i from South Korea at ten months old and the challenges I faced learning another language. Within these segments, I considered the notion of home and how we construct our ideas about who we are or who we should be based on our relation to home. During this time, I was influenced by works such as David Mura’s A Nisei Daughter and Fae Myenne Ng’s Bone as I was drawn not only to their subject matter but their level of craft. For instance, I enjoyed the simplicity of language in both pieces and how that simplicity allowed for nuance within the story. The sentences were not particularly long or ornate, but their compactness helped to create direct and straightforward writing that allowed for themes to be conveyed effectively. Yet, another part of me enjoys the oftentimes meandering and humor-filled writing of authors such as David Sedaris and the long and descriptive writing of William Faulkner. Their use of extensive description is not only interesting to read but useful in characterizing settings or characters.
