Miguel, Açores) Por José Bettencourt da Câmara (Universidade de Évora) É já como “moinhos da Maia” que no tempo de Gaspar Frutuoso, que usa efectivamente a expressão, é denominado o vasto conjunto dessas primevas unidades industriais que durante cerca de cinco séculos – até que há algumas décadas, por força do desenvolvimento económico e tecnológico, foram abandonadas – serviram as necessidades de transformação do milho e do trigo em farinha de toda a população do que até ao século XIX se chamou o lugar da Maia, na ilha de S. Miguel (Açores). Ao descrever as terríveis consequências com que à costa norte da ilha se estendeu o terramoto que subverteu Vila Franca do Campo na noite de 21 para 22 de Outubro de 1522, o cronista refere os moinhos locais, podendo deduzir-se do número de pessoas que albergavam que eram, já então, em quantidade significativa: “Levou a terra, que correu, muito gado e currais ao mar, e os moinhos da Maia , onde estavam dois casais, Moínhos dos Calhambazes. É visível a “patine” com que o sal trazido pela aragem marítima foi cobrindo as paredes das construções e os rochedos circunvizinhos, matizando a cor escura do basalto. em que podiam estar nos moinhos e casais até quarenta pessoas, porque dentro nos moinhos estavam somente vinte e duas e escaparam só dois homens, João Luis e Amador Martins, filho de Martim Lourenço” (1). Outra passagem do Livro Quarto das Saudades da terra precisa a localização do que já devia constituir o aglomerado maior dessas construções: “Junto está a ponta dos Moinhos, que sai pouco ao mar e tomou o nome destes seus vizinhos” (2).

    ASSEMBLEIA LEGISLATIVA DA REGIÃO AUTÓNOMA DOS AÇORES TRABALHOS DA COMISSÃO A Comissão Permanente de Economia reuniu no dia 28 de Janeiro de 2014, na Delegação da Assembleia Legislativa da Região Autónoma dos Açores, na cidade de Ponta Delgada e por videoconferência, a fim de analisar e dar parecer sobre a Petição “Encerramento da Estação dos Correios da Maia”. 1º. CAPÍTULO – INTRODUÇÃO Em 13 de Junho de 2013, deu entrada na Assembleia Legislativa da Região Autónoma dos Açores, uma Petição intitulada “Encerramento da Estação dos Correios da Maia”, cujo 1.º subscritor é a Senhora Maria Angelina Pereira Pacheco. A autora da Petição apresenta, genericamente, a respetiva pretensão considerando os seguintes pressupostos: 1. A existência de informações que apontavam para o propósito de encerramento da Estação dos Correios da freguesia da Maia, Ilha de S. Miguel; 2. Aquela instituição tem prestado um inestimável serviço às populações das freguesias da Maia, Porto Formoso, São Brás, Lomba da Maia, Fenais da Ajuda e Lomba de S. Pedro; Justifica ainda que os eventuais fatores de ordem económica e financeira não se lhes afiguram concebíveis e aceitáveis. Concluindo a autora refere que esta Petição expressa uma vontade coletiva mobilizada ao abrigo do exercício de uma cidadania empenhada e participada.     1. LOMBA DA MAIA 2. 1.1. O CASTELO O castelo é uma fortificação, estrutura arquitetónica com funções defensivas e residencial geralmente em posição dominante no terreno, para facilitar o registo visual das forças inimigas e comunicações a grandes distâncias. O castelo clássico com praça de armas era cercado pelas edificações adossadas às muralhas, sendo o topo percorrido por um adarve e protegido por ameias e o acesso pelo Portão de Armas (principal), havendo a "Poterna" ou "Porta da Traição" para a eventual retirada dos defensores. As muralhas, reforçadas por torres, eram elementos defensivos, com mata-cães e ameias. A defesa ampliada por barbacãs, fossos e valas (secos ou inundados) para dificultar a aproximação e proteger contra os trabalhos de sapa dos invasores. A torre de menagem era um pequeno castelo dentro da cidadela. Os portões defendidos por pesadas portas levadiças com uma grade nas ombreiras do portão bloqueando a passagem. Diversos castelos portugueses foram erguidos sobre castros pré-romanos, em locais ocupados até à invasão islâmica. Aquando da Reconquista cristã foram aproveitadas alargadas e reforçadas. Lá residia uma população escassa. A restante nos campos vizinhos só recolhia em caso de ataque. A estrutura arquitetónica do castelo sofreu mutações e em meados do séc. XIV com as armas de fogo, tornou- se necessário modificá-los. Já se utilizavam trons (bombardas) desde o tempo de D. Fernando. Foi preciso criar um novo espaço defensivo, a fortaleza, que levou ao abandono da maioria dos castelos no território.
