Pitts and Kane Trans-Atlantic History of Sexualties August 2014 Challenging the Cramped Binary Ideations of Sexual Identification Although the time that LGBTQ history has been recorded and researched is relatively short in comparison to other areas, what is available and known paints a colorful picture of the community and is embedded with the strength that has persisted throughout time. As it turns out, the Trans-Atlantic LGBTQ memory is as similar as it is diverse. Opinions vary by time and space, but the one thing that will always remain will be the strength and conviction embedded within the community. The consensus for LGBTQ rights advocates and allies is that there is nothing that is any more wrong with any person who identifies as LGBTQ than there is for anyone else. Unfortunately, there is a deep history in the world at large of fear of difference and the notion that there is an absolutely "right" way to live and an absolutely "wrong" way to live. During the time that is tracked, predominantly from the 20th century to the present, there were similar developments in the United States, the Netherlands, and France. This article argues that through its role as a national clearing house and funding agency, Reed Erickson and the Erickson Educational Foundation (EEF) actively directed the course of trans research and contemporary social services and policies effecting trans people. Benjamin was born in Berlin in 1885. While still a university student, his interest in the science of sexuality led to a friendship with Magnus Hirschfeld, the leader of the homosexual emancipation movement and founding director of the Institute for Sexual Science. Benjamin accompanied Hirschfeld on visits to homosexual and transgender bars in Berlin when Hirschfeld was researching and writing Die Transvestiten, the first book-length treatment of transgender phenomena, published in 1910. Benjamin completed his medical studies at the University of Tübingen in 1912, and came to the United States in 1913 to work as a doctor on a tuberculosis research project. He attempted to return to Germany in 1914, at the outbreak of World War I, but his ship was intercepted en route from New York and diverted to England. After a brief stay in an internment camp as an enemy alien, Benjamin was allowed to return to New York, where he became a United States citizen and established a successful medical practice. In the 1920s and 1930s, Benjamin maintained close personal and professional contacts with Hirschfeld and the Viennese endocrinologist Eugen Steinach, a specialist in anti-aging treatments who also conducted the first medical experiments to determine the roles of estrogen and testosterone in the production of secondary sex characteristics.

Transgender groups have participated in activism and education around many issues, including gender expectations, depathologization, poverty, and discrimination. Like many other marginalized people, our history is not always preserved, and we have few places to turn to learn the stories of our predecessors. This chapter is an unabridged version of the United States History chapter of Trans Bodies, Trans Selves, a resource guide by and for transgender communities. Despite lim- iting its focus to the United States, this chapter still contained so much important in- formation that would need to be cut to meet the book’s length requirements that a decision was made to publish it separately in its original form. We cannot possibly tell the stories of the many diverse people who together make up our history, but we hope that this is a beginning.
