Ethnic conflicts and fighting between government forces and minority groups in many parts of Myanmar during the past few decades have caused high casualties and brought about damage to infrastructure and public service systems across the country. Political suppression of ‘pro-democracy’ groups further drove many people outside of the country’s boundaries.
