    CHAPTER 10 THE MONISM OF DARKNESS AND THE DUALISM OF LIMIT AND INDETERMINACY 1. Greek philosophical dualism sprang from an experience of cosmological (structural) and cosmogonic (causal) polarity between the Luminous Form and the Indeterminacy of Darkness, between astounding Beauty and awe-inspiring Power, between archetypal, well- ordered Harmony and reckless, productive Fertility. Such a polarity found expression in religion, poetry and popular belief as the copulation of the antithetical Male and Female, in philosophy as the opposition, but also conjugation, of Limit and Indeterminacy1. Underneath the experience of polarity a deeper experience lay hidden which originally engendered and nurtured dualism and which, later, when polarity came to relative independence, was developed to such a degree that it finally altered the entire articulation of Dualism by digesting it according to its own proper modalities. That was the experience of aboriginal Darkness as the terrible and almighty Womb of all-that-is. The primaeval Darkness and the infinite Silence of first origins, the theocosmic Abyss of Chaos and the unblest and awful all-generating Night were in the beginning felt and conceived as the foundation and the root of existence, as the causal and temporal beginning of everything, as the Great Mother of the world’s subsistence. This conception while actively experienced led to the religious and theoretical formation of the Monism of Darkness, that is to say to the sole recognition of a single, primaeval, dark

But it’s plenty interesting for my purposes. Marine, the not-quite-noble gentleman of the title, is tired of loitering at court, an activity his wife adores. Listen to Marine’s soliloquy as he screws up his courage to tell his wife that they’re abandoning city life: Why what an Asse was I that such a thing As a wife is could rule me? Know not I That woman was created for the man, That her desires, nay all her thoughts should be As his are? is my sense restor’d at length? Now she shall know, that which she should desire, She hath a husband that can govern her, If her desires leades me against my will. Sounding in the book of Genesis, the passage asserts a classic justification for male dominance. It’s unblushing in describing that dominance as governance. Such criticisms, familiar among contemporary political theorists, were expressed far more forcefully in the earlier twentieth century. Liberalism then came under attack from anti-liberals who wholly rejected the institutional and ethical limits on the political deployment of violence and fear insisted upon by liberals. Such anti-liberals advanced arguments for political ruthlessness on behalf of a truer morality – either the morality of pursuing morally imperative political goals; or the morality of “realistically” responding to threats to public order.

This study is the first comprehensive analysis of the fatal woman motif in the writings and art of Edvard Munch from the early 1890s to 1909. It uses a background of the women in the artist's life as well as the literary and artistic worlds in which Munch participated. Following separate ac- counts of Munch's relationships with five women, the manner in which the artist characterizes each as a fatal woman in his writings and art is dis- cussed and analyzed. Next, the study describes the fatal woman motif in late nineteenth century art and literature. It begins with a discussion of the origin of the Symbolist and Decadent Movements and an ideological exam- ination of the fatal woman motif as it is manifested in the writing and art of these two groups. In addition, it compares Munch's visual manifes- tations of the femme fatale with the manner in which the artist's contemporaries depicted her. Finally, this study describes two groups of men with whom Munch was particularly close: the Christiania Boheme and the Schwarzen Ferkel Circle.
