She lives in an illusory world where her actual life does not match the ideal life she has in her head—she believes that her beauty and charm make her worthy of greater things. The party is a triumph because for the first time, her appearance matches the reality of her life. She is prettier than the other women, sought after by the men, and generally admired and flattered by all. Her life, in the few short hours of the party, is as she feels it should be. However, beneath this rightness and seeming match of appearances and reality is the truth that her appearance took a great deal of scheming and work. The bliss of her evening was not achieved without angst, and the reality of her appearance is much different than it seems. -

Both were masters of achieving the designs in tended. Their works are concise, inventive and intriguing. But there are noticeable differences in the humor and philosophy of their works. Before a detailed comparison of the works of the two artists is attempt ed, a definition and some background information of the short story as a literary genre must be given. Brevity, the most obvious characteristic of the short story, is not the only distinctive characteristic of this genre for there are other forms of which brevity is also characteristic. The novelette or condensed novel lacks the preciseness and singleness of effect which are characteristic of the short story; the episode, the sketch and the tale usually contain no plot. Th.e one characteristic of all these lit erary forms is brevity. The short story differs from the other forms in that it is: A brief, imaginative narrative, unfolding a single pre dominating incident and usually a single chief character; contains a plot, the details of which are so compressed and the whole treatment so organized as to produce a single im pression •1 Short prose narrative is the form used in the Story of Ruth, the Tales of the Arabian Nights and other works dating from the early 1 J. -

Maupassant published just over 300 short stories. Sandra Smith, who has previously translated Camus’s L’Étranger and eleven works by Irène Némirovsky, presents this cross-section of thirty as “Maupassant for modern times,” arguing that “the majority of the existing translations … are extremely dated” (indeed; and often anonymous and frequently abbreviated) and have rendered him currently under- appreciated (p. vii). Some recent versions are both complete and accurate--for instance David Coward’s chronological choice, with which this volume shares twelve stories--but this selection is welcome.[1] Intended for the general reader, it avoids any attempt to characterize how the selections “contribute … to … what a modern short story is” (p. ix), or indeed to define the “short story genre” (p. vii). Nor does Smith mention its inferior status in nineteenth-century literature and its origins in journalism, which dictated length and immediate intelligibility (Maupassant increasingly sought to establish his reputation as a novelist), or its tendency to position itself, in both theme and technique, in opposition to the contemporary novel. Some useful contextual information is provided in an outline of Maupassant’s life (reproduced from Robert Lethbridge) and in brief introductions to the selection’s three thematic sections (dates of publication are not given): tales of French life, of war, of the supernatural. -

CHAPTER 10 THE MONISM OF DARKNESS AND THE DUALISM OF LIMIT AND INDETERMINACY 1. Greek philosophical dualism sprang from an experience of cosmological (structural) and cosmogonic (causal) polarity between the Luminous Form and the Indeterminacy of Darkness, between astounding Beauty and awe-inspiring Power, between archetypal, well- ordered Harmony and reckless, productive Fertility. Such a polarity found expression in religion, poetry and popular belief as the copulation of the antithetical Male and Female, in philosophy as the opposition, but also conjugation, of Limit and Indeterminacy1. Underneath the experience of polarity a deeper experience lay hidden which originally engendered and nurtured dualism and which, later, when polarity came to relative independence, was developed to such a degree that it finally altered the entire articulation of Dualism by digesting it according to its own proper modalities. That was the experience of aboriginal Darkness as the terrible and almighty Womb of all-that-is. The primaeval Darkness and the infinite Silence of first origins, the theocosmic Abyss of Chaos and the unblest and awful all-generating Night were in the beginning felt and conceived as the foundation and the root of existence, as the causal and temporal beginning of everything, as the Great Mother of the world’s subsistence. Such criticisms, familiar among contemporary political theorists, were expressed far more forcefully in the earlier twentieth century. Liberalism then came under attack from anti-liberals who wholly rejected the institutional and ethical limits on the political deployment of violence and fear insisted upon by liberals. Such anti-liberals advanced arguments for political ruthlessness on behalf of a truer morality – either the morality of pursuing morally imperative political goals; or the morality of “realistically” responding to threats to public order. -

CCI3 LANGUAGE AND DISCOURSE MAUPASSANT’S BEST SHORT-STORIES: SOME NOTES ON AN ANONYMOUS WORDSWORTH CLASSICS TRANSLATION Daniela Hăisan, Assist. Prof., PhD, ”Ștefan cel Mare” University of Suceava Abstract: Maupassant earned international renown with collections of stories that have been edited and reedited over and over again in different configurations. As Emmanuèle Grandadam pointed out in her Poétique du recueil (1970), the criteria behind the selection of short-stories to make up a volume are more often than not obscure, ranging from vaguely thematic to purely subjective. We are going to infer what allowed Wordsworth Classics to label seventeen of Maupassant’s short-stories as ʻthe very bestʼ and to deliberately omit the name of the translator of these stories from French into English. Furthermore, we are going to analyse the English versions from the point of view of lay-out, titles, deictics, affective language and other stylistic quirks. Keywords: translation, affective, deictics, free indirect speech. Wordsworth Editions was launched in 1987 with the aim of providing invaluable books for students by remarketing the classic paperback, more to the point by offering high quality books to readers on a tight budget. While literally cheap, these books strive to make culture more accessible without totally sacrificing some sort of scholastic pretence. Introductions and Notes are included in the vast majority of the titles in the Adult Classics and World Literature Series, written by leading academics; Further Reading Lists are also included (although Wikipedia is, among other links, also considered). We are going to focus on a Wordsworth Classics edition of Maupassant’s fiction dated 2011 (previous edition, 1997) that, surprisingly for these days, omits the name of the translator of Maupassant’s works from French into English. -
