    Matej Santi, Elias Berner (eds.) Music – Media – History Music and Sound Culture | Volume 44 Matej Santi studied violin and musicology. He obtained his PhD at the University for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, focusing on central European history and cultural studies. Since 2017, he has been part of the “Telling Sounds Project” as a postdoctoral researcher, investigating the use of music and discourses about music in the media. Elias Berner studied musicology at the University of Vienna and has been resear- cher (pre-doc) for the “Telling Sounds Project” since 2017.     May 2017 RESEARCH SUPPORT The Academy’s library team provides a document-delivery service for residential fellows and Distinguished Visitors. Books and other media are normally delivered within two to three days, depending on the complexity of research and access to materials. Books not obtainable from Berlin libraries can be ordered via inter-library loan and will arrive within two to three weeks (express delivery within 72 hrs). To order a book or materials from external libraries, fellows fill out a book request online. The librarian will supply the link to this order form. The Academy also offers research support to fellows in their navigation of the Berlin library and archive landscape. The following pages offer information about Berlin’s non- lending libraries and archives. The Academy’s librarian can also answer research-facility questions and help prepare visits to archives. State Library (Staatsbibliothek – Stabi) The easiest and quickest way is the search via the StaBiKat, the online catalogue of the Staatsbibliothek (http://stabikat.de). Usually, Stabi books can be delivered within two days. We also have a special loan condition concerning books published before the 1950s and after 1850. We can borrow them, as long as they are not reference or rare books. In case the Stabi does not have the material you need, you will find the main catalogues and libraries listed below. Keep in mind that not all libraries have online catalogues that include all their holdings of books published before the 1990s (In these cases, I will check the old card-catalogues for you).

  • Strategic Priorities 2017–2020
    2017 2020 STRATEGIC PRIORITIES PREFACE When in 2014 the German National Library published its Strategic Priorities for 2013 to 2016, this was the first time since its founding that the library had set out in print its objectives and priorities for its further development over a defined four-year period, covering both sites and all departments. A total of five Strategic Priorities were highlighted, each consisting of four to six main objectives and related sub-objectives, including suggested time frames: this yielded a total of 24 main objectives and 98 sub-objectives, including six (new) sub-objectives, scheduled to run over a period of several years, resulting in a total of 104 sub-objectives. In the period from 2013 to 2016, 78% of the sub-objectives were met either in full or in part. Various reasons were identified in the cases in which the objectives were not met, the most frequent of which were inadequate human and financial resources, pre-conditions which were not met and changes in the overall framework since the objectives were formulated. Most of the objectives which were not met (either at all or in part) are still relevant, and so they have been included in modified form in the strategic considerations for the next cycle from 2017 to 2020. Building upon its experience with the Strategic Priorities 2013–2016 and the “German National Library 2025: Strategic Compass” framework document which was published in September 2016, the German National Library is now presenting its priorities for the period from 2017 to 2020. The “Compass” indicated the direction over the next ten years, thereby providing a longer term perspective, whereas the Strategic Priorities 2017–2020, much like a road map, reveal the medium-term objectives which the German National Library intends to use to achieve its long- term goals.

However, this can only function, if we come together and invent the future pragmatically while identifying and adopting different perspectives, if we accept complexity and uncertainty as something natural, if we live them and shape them. On that note, the year 2019 was again marked by changes that were essential for the German National Library to continue its role as the active memory of the country’s past and future cultural heritage. The most important change for me personally was when Elisabeth Niggemann handed over her office at the end of last year. The work she so outstandingly organised and began must now be continued and expanded in cooperation with our partners while positioning the German National Library as the central stakeholder in a dynamic digital information landscape. From an outside perspective, the most obvious change is probably DNB's new website. The autumn of 2019 also saw the publication of the new information brochure “Search.
