The Boys in the Band is about the cost of rejecting people, the dangers of what that sort of enforced captivity or identity suppression at the very least and performative "fitting in" can be, and the value of progress away from that. An interactive special. Leeza Gibbons. Runtime: 22 min. Genres: Comedy. Here we have a picture of a group of gay men who had to depend on each other for emotional and physical safety. Nominated for 1 Golden Globe. Written by Mart Crowley who died earlier this year , the original production and movie captured the then-shocking voices of a group of gay men in New York, written in the era before the Stonewall Riots and the greater activism and visibility that followed. If an audience is uncomfortable with the sight of the effeminate Emory or appalled by the promiscuity of Larry and Michael and Harold's razor-sharp bitching or the limited intelligence but game sexuality of Cowboy, it's because somewhere, that audience has been told that those stereotypes are not acceptable. Young Peter Dahlbeck Alpha Miknas As Bernard, Emory, and Hank make their calls, there is some suggestion of the emotional traumas they've been through and the cost of rejection by a world filled with even more tangible hatred. Hank Brian Dole Donald Andrew Rannells There's only so much, however, that can be done on that score, and fortunately, the cast -- anchored by Parsons and Quinto, whose exchanges drip with venom -- admirably holds the screen. Still, it's helpful to contemplate how this sort of raw dialogue sounded in '68 to absorb this movie not just as a showcase for the performers, but a reflection on all that's happened -- and what still hasn't -- since Crowley and company first struck up the "Band. Yes, there may be some challenging content in there, but this deeply political story is fundamentally about acceptance and community and the self-hatred and sanctuary of community is hugely important. The Boys in the Band is a story of contradiction, fundamentally, because it, at one end, speaks to how far the world has come since the society behind the play made gay existence so dangerous and actually amplifies the moments of pride in there through proximity. There's certainly cause for doubt, but there's also a lot of evidence to suggest he is what Michael believes, and there's no stage in the film where Michael's honestly - often painful and pointed though it is - is anything but the truth. Instead, he goes to seek solace in a bar, alone, reaffirming that whatever he came to Michael for is not quite as sewn up as his thanks to the host on his way out seem to have suggested. There are not a lot of actors who can follow up 12 seasons as the star of a hugely popular sitcom with meaty roles in serious dramas. A-camera operator: steadicam Matthew Selkirk The Boys in the Band was always a triumph of representation because gay people on the cusp of the s saw themselves on stage and then screen where their failings weren't due to the fact that they were gay. • (The Musical) Is Awesomely Lame | Culture | Religion Dispatches
REVIEW June 12, 2011 Why The Book of Mormon (the Musical) is Awesomely Lame Never mind the Tony awards and all the acclaim, Broadway's best is not all that. By JARED FARMER The Book of Mormon cleaned up at this year's Tony Awards, winning nine of the 14 awards it was nominated for, including Best Musical. But tonight's success is hardly unexpected, capping off, as it does, an extraordinary season of critical adulation. What’s going on? Why has a good-not-great religious satire from the creators of South Park received rapturous praise from the whole canon of media tastemakers? It may be true that The Book of Mormon is the second best musical début (behind American Idiot) on the Great White Way in recent memory, but that’s really not saying much. In a season devoted mainly to re-runs, revivals, and adaptations, The Book of Mormon stands out for being a first-run play with an original score and book. Also, while the musical adheres to 1950s Broadway conventions— tunefulness, campiness, and uplift—it's modishly vulgar. The Book of Arnold? The plot concerns two unprepared and ill-paired missionaries, a pious hunk and a delusional geek, sent from Utah to Uganda. There the rural villagers suffer from AIDS, dysentery, and political violence. The Ugandans say they have no use for this American religion; it doesn’t help their situation. But when the chubby, bespectacled geek—a Mormon who has never read the Book of Mormon—invents “scriptural” stories in the form of practical allegories, with embellishments borrowed from Star Trek, Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings, the Africans respond enthusiastically.

Fascination/Frustration: Slash Fandom, Genre, and Queer Uptake Taylor Boulware A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2017 Reading Committee: Thomas Foster, Chair Anis Bawarshi Katherine Cummings Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Department of English Fascination/Frustration: Slash Fandom, Genre, and Queer Uptake by Taylor Boulware The University of Washington, 2017 Under the Supervision of Professor Dr. Thomas Foster ABSTRACT This dissertation examines contemporary television slash fandom, in which fans write and circulate creative texts that dramatize non-canonical queer relationships between canonically heterosexual male characters. These texts contribute to the creation of global networks of affective and social relations, critique the specific corporate media texts from which they emerge, and undermine homophobic ideologies that prevent authentic queer representation in mainstream media. Intervening in dominant scholarly and popular arguments about slash fans, I maintain a rigorous distinction between the act of reading homoerotic subtexts in TV shows and writing fiction that makes that homoeroticism explicit, in every sense of the word. This emphasis on writing and the circulation of responsive, recursive texts can best be understood, I argue, through the framework of Rhetorical Genre Studies, which theorizes genres and the ways in which they are deployed, modified, and circulated as ideological and social action. I nuance the RGS concept of uptake, which names the generic dimensions of utterance and response, and define my concept of queer uptake, in which writers respond to a text in ways that refuse its generic boundaries and status, motivated by an ideological resistance to both genre and sexual normativity.

  • Traduzione Di Costantino Della Gherardesca Regia Di Giorgio Umberto Bozzo
