Gladesville Bridge – Parramatta River Old Gladesville Bridge • Constructed 1878 to 1881. • Wrought iron lattice girder spans. • Swing span for navigation purposes. Old Gladesville Bridge (approximate location) 1956 1881 Reasons for New Gladesville Bridge • New bridge originally intended to be part of Sydney’s North Western Expressway (road linking Sydney City to the northern suburbs and through to Newcastle). • Earlier bridge’s useful service life exceeded. • Only two-lane traffic capacity – ‘bottleneck’ to traffic flow. • Swing span – abrupt interference to traffic flow. • North Western Expressway project was abandoned in the 1970s due to protests about the freeway's projected route through inner city suburbs such as Glebe and Annandale. Early Concept Designs • Concept designs developed by DMR’s Bridge Section, headed by Design Engineer Cliff Robertson (one of John Bradfield’s senior assistants on Sydney Harbour Bridge). • Bridge Section of DMR included a number of other highly-respected bridge engineers during this period, namely Vladimir Karmalsky, Albert Fried and Brian Pearson. DMR Tender Design – Steel Cantilever Bridge Tender Process • 1957 – tenders invited by Department of Main Roads (DMR), based on steel cantilever bridge, but alternative designs permitted (tenders closed October 1957). • Four (4) companies tendered for the steel design. • Tenders ranged from £2.51 M to £3.87 M. -

Appendix A Sutherland Shire Council’s Response to: Heathcote Ridge - Site of State Significance Submission to NSW Department of Planning & Infrastructure Dec 2011 This submission includes the consideration of all issues contained in the Director General's Requirements, as well as of additional issues arising from the assessment of this proposal that are of particular concern. The structure of the following sections of the report is based on the numbering and headings system used in the Director General's Requirements. Sustainability Criteria for New Land Release 1. Assessment against the ‘Sustainability Criteria for New Land Release’ in the Metropolitan Strategy and provide justification of listing the site on the Metropolitan Development Program. When evaluated against the State’s ‘Measureable Explanation of Criteria’, the Gandangara Local Aboriginal Land council (GLALC) Heathcote Ridge proposal fails to substantially satisfy the Sustainability Criteria for New Land Release, for the reasons outlined below: Infrastructure The proposed Heathcote Ridge development does not satisfy the requirement that a new land release area must be consistent with “any relevant development strategy, subregional strategy, regional infrastructure strategy and Metropolitan Plan”. This assessment is based on West Menai‘s exclusion from the draft South Subregional Strategy (2007) as a site for residential development. (“There are no major land release areas planned in the South Subregion and most future dwelling growth will be accommodated with existing urban areas” . pg 86). More significantly, the Strategy specifically highlights West Menai’s restricted urban development potential and its capabilities as a ‘Potential Employment Area to be Investigated’. “…much of [West Menai] has environmental significance and its development could impact significantly on adjoining land and be impacted itself from activity on adjoining land such as bushfire and emissions from the waste deposit. -

Concrete Slab and Arch Bridges 101 Masonry Bridges Heritage Study of Masonry Bridges in NSW 2005 1 Historical Overview of Bridge Types in NSW: Extract from the Study of Masonry Bridges in NSW HISTORICAL BACKGROUND TO MASONRY BRIDGES IN NSW 1.1 History of early bridges constructed in NSW Bridges constructed prior to the 1830s were relatively simple forms. The majority of these were timber structures, with the occasional use of stone piers. The first bridge constructed in NSW was built in 1788. The bridge was a simple timber bridge constructed over the Tank Stream, near what is today the intersection of George and Bridge Streets in the Central Business District of Sydney. Soon after it was washed away and needed to be replaced. The first "permanent" bridge in NSW was this bridge's successor. This was a masonry and timber arch bridge with a span of 24 feet erected in 1803 (Figure 1.1). However this was not a triumph of colonial bridge engineering, as it collapsed after only three years' service. It took a further five years for the bridge to be rebuilt in an improved form. The contractor who undertook this work received payment of 660 gallons of spirits, this being an alternative currency in the Colony at the time (Main Roads, 1950: 37) Figure 1.1 “View of Sydney from The Rocks, 1803”, by John Lancashire (Dixson Galleries, SLNSW). -

Proceedings of the 21st Association of Public Authority Surveyors Conference (APAS2016) Leura, New South Wales, Australia, 4-6 April 2016 NorthConnex: Subsurface Stratum Acquisition Kit Panya Roads and Maritime Services [email protected] ABSTRACT NorthConnex is a proposed 9 km tunnel motorway designed to link the M1 Pacific Motorway in Wahroonga to the Hills M2 Motorway in Pennant Hills. The tunnel is part of the NSW Government’s State Infrastructure Strategy forming an essential link in the Sydney Orbital Network and expected to cost $3 billion. In January 2015, NorthConnex received official project approval by the NSW Government. The earliest access date required for tunnel construction was July 2015. The NorthConnex project team engaged the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) Cadastral Survey Unit for the stratum acquisition of approximately 900 lots. The acquisition was predominantly subsurface, but also included surface land, strata title, and community title acquisition. Between the project approval date and the tunnel access requirements, we had a timeframe of two months to acquire the first 80 lots in the initial stage. This paper outlines how the RMS Cadastral Survey Unit was able to respond, using a plan production and lodgement strategy unique to previous motorways. With Land and Property Information (LPI), we developed the Subsurface Stratum Definition Strategy to allow for the compilation of boundaries for subsurface acquisition plans. Once the strategy was in place, the extent of acquisition was determined from analysis of spatial data and the tunnel model. Compiled plan production, and occasionally field surveys, could then take place to complete the acquisition process. -
