Some of them are still appreciated and consumed, in other cases their consumption is only in the memory of the elderly people and the knowledge about these species is at risk of disappearing. Within the framework of the Spanish project ‘The genetic resources of edible underutilized species: field collection, multiplication and conservation in the Germplasm Bank’, during 2009 various collecting expeditions across Aragón, a region of 47720 km 2 in the northeast of Spain, were performed with the following aims: 1) To compile information about wild species used for eating, 2) To locate these species within their natural habitat, 3) To classify them taxonomically, 4) To obtain some seeds and maintain them under long-term storage conditions. IDENTIFIERS PLANT IDENTIFICATION A total of 31 personal interviews have been carried out. The age of the A total of 95 seed samples of wild edible species have been collected, belonging to 16 informers was between 44 and 92, being the average age 66 years old. Medit. 26: 19-24. 2016. — ISSN: 1120-4052 printed, 2240-4538 online. A new alien plant – Verbesina encelioides (Asteraceae) – was recorded in Tunisia at Hencha- Sfax. Its identification was based on specimens’ examination and relevant literature. A floristic exploration was made during October-November 2013 to map the spatial distribution and to measure some biological traits of this species. Within an area of 40 km² and along 35 km of roadsides 19 infestations we recorded. The large part of them was located in ruderal environ- ments and in lesser extent in field crops. During field trips we noted V. encelioides behavior in each habitat. It is a drought tolerant erect annual plant, germinating in early spring or autumn; some seedlings may survive the winter season. From the observations this species look like more adapted to roadsides than to field crops. Key words: xenophytes, alien flora, Tunisia, invasive weed. Introduction Asteraceae family in the Tunisian flora comprises 109 genera and 282 species (Le Floc’h & al. 2010). However, there were no herbarium or literature data of the genus Verbesina in Tunisia (CABI 2015). This monophyletic genus is the largest one in the tribe Heliantheae. It contains about 300 world-wide species of herbs, shrubs and trees, ranging from eastern Canada to central Argentina (Panero & Jansen 1997). -

Abstract In the present work the authors report the result of their food ethnobotanical researches, which have been carried out in Sicily during the last thirty years. Data concerning 188 wild species used in the traditional Sicilian cuisine are reported. The authors underline those species that are partially or completely unknown for their culinary use and they illustrate other species that local inhabitants suggested in the prevention or treatment of symptomatologies caused by a refined diet, poor in vegetables. These data want to contribute to avoid the loss of traditional knowledge on uses and recipes concerning wild food botanicals, and to encourage further studies for those species that have not yet been sufficiently researched in their food chemical and nutritional profile. These studies may also suggest new applications for a few botanicals in medico-nutritional fields. -

The Rocky habitat Al Mansora 6.5 km of the Mediterranean Sea with altitude at 309.4 m, distance Jarjr-oma 300 m of the sea with altitude 1 m and distance. Vegetation study was undertaken during the autumn 2010 and winter, spring and summer 2011. The applied classification technique was the TWINSPAN, Divided ecologically into six main habitats to the vegetation in Rocky habitat of Al Mansora and five habitats in Jarjr oma into groups depending on the average number of species in habitats and community: In Rocky habitat Al Mansora community vegetation type Cistus parviflorus, Erica multiflora, Teucrium apollinis, Thymus capitatus, Micromeria Juliana, Colchium palaestinum and Arisarum vulgare. In Jarjr oma existed five habitat Salt march habitat Community dominant species by Suaeda vera, Saline habitat species Onopordum cyrenaicum, Rocky coastal habitat species Rumex bucephalophorus, Sandy beach habitat species Tamarix tetragyna and Sand formation habitat dominant by Retama raetem. The number of species in the Rocky habitat Al Mansora 175 species while in Jarjr oma reached 19 species of Salt march habitat and Saline habitat 111 species and 153 of the Rocky coastal habitat and reached to 33 species in Sandy beach and 8 species of Sand formations habitat. -

In this study, an ethnobotanical field investigation was carried out to (a) identify the wild native taxa traditionally gathered and consumed as vegetables in Sicily, comparing the collected ethnobotanical data with those of other countries that have nominated the Mediterranean diet for inclusion in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and (b) highlight new culinary uses of these plants. Methods: Interviews were carried out in 187 towns and villages in Sicily between 2005 and 2015. A total of 980 people over the age of 50 were interviewed (mainly farmers, shepherds, and experts on local traditions). Plants recorded were usually collected in collaboration with the informants to confirm the correct identification of the plants. The frequencies of citation were calculated. Results: Two hundred fifty-three taxa (specific and intraspecific) belonging to 39 families, and 128 genera were recorded (26 were cited for the first time). The most represented families were Asteraceae, Brassicaceae, Apiaceae, Amaryllidaceae, Malvaceae, and Polygonaceae. Only 14 taxa were cited by 75% of the people interviewed. The aerial parts of wild plants, including leaves, tender shoots, and basal rosettes, are the main portions collected, while the subterranean parts are used to a lesser extent. -

Email: [email protected] Abstract A concise taxonomic treatment of tribe Lactuceae (Asteraceae) in Australia is presented, with descriptions of 35 species in 20 of the 23 genera in Australia. Keys to all genera and to species in 20 genera are presented. In this paper Tolpis virgata (Desf.) Bertol., Reichardia picroides (L.) Roth, and Lactuca serriola f. integrifolia (Gray) S.D.Prince & R.N.Carter are newly recognised as introduced taxa, and two subspecies of Hedypnois rhagadioloides (L.) F.W.Schmidt are recognised for the first time in Australia. Introduction Tribe Lactuceae is a large tribe in the Asteraceae with well over 500 species predominantly in the northern hemisphere. Australia is poorly represented, having only six genera with native representatives and a total of only c. 8 native species. Seventeen further genera have introduced representatives in Australia. The vast majority of species in Australia have their entire or major part of their distribution south of tropical latitudes. Many species are widespread and common weeds of urban environments, wasteland and agricultural land. Sonchus and Taraxacum are represented by a mixture of native and introduced species, whereas Launaea, Picris, Microseris, Youngia, and Actites are represented by only native species. No genera are endemic to Australia. The taxonomic review presented here is drawn from a Flora of Australia account of the Lactuceae recently prepared by the author. As it is likely to be several years before the Flora account is published, it is considered desirable to present the findings of my research at this time. -

WILD FOOD PLANTS TRADITIONALLY USED IN THE PROVINCE OF MADRID,CENTRAL SPAIN. Eco- nomic Botany 59(2):122±136, 2005. This paper reports an ethnobotanical investigation, per- formed between 1999 and 2002, to determine the wild food plants traditionally used in the province of Madrid (central Spain). One hundred and twenty-three vascular species belonging to 31 families were at one time used as vegetables, wild fruits, in the making of beverages, as seasonings, or as other preparations. Wild vegetables formed the largest group, with Scolymus hispanicus, Silene vulgaris, and Rumex pulcher the most frequently cooked vegetables, and Rorippa nasturtium-aquaticum and Montia fontana the most commonly used in salads. Also common was the consumption of asparagus and several species of climbing plants such as Bryonia dioica, Tamus communis, and Humulus lupulus. Ethnobotanical novelties included Sonchus crassifolius, the young sprouts of which were used in salads, and Inula salicina, used to make herbal tea. Some ecological and cultural aspects of the collection of wild plants for food are discussed, as well as the relationships between the food and medicinal uses of some species.
