    SESSION 8.2– Passive Housing, Paper 75 A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE PASSIVE HOUSE STANDARD FOR THE CLIMATES OF THE UNITED STATES Ryan Michael Abendroth1 ABSTRACT This research demonstrates that when using current technologies and practices, the functional definition of a passive house as defined by Schneiders (Schneiders 2009) and later by Feist (Feist 2012) as a building that "can provide the necessary heating, cooling, and dehumidification through supply air ventilation" is not achievable in all U.S. climate zones. To make possible the widespread adoption of this low energy standard, the Passive House Standard itself needs to be adjusted and redefined for the United States. The study simulated a given sample building by testing building parameters such as the glazing percentage, solar heat gain coefficient, window U-Values, and R-Values for the walls, roof, and floor. For each of the 1000 TMY3 climate locations throughout the United States, 10,125 unique cases were simulated until every possible combination of the factors above were run. This process of optimization will demonstrate the sensitivity of certain passive house features to increases and decreases in energy use as well as the limits to what is achievable in passive house design and construction. To maintain precision between the climates, this research analyzed the simulated results for each passive house criteria against the data from within each climate set including temperature, radiation, dew point, and sky temperature.     2016 Conference in Review 27 April 2016 Passive House Conference demonstrates sustainable solutions for new constructions and retrofits International Conference back in Darmstadt on the anniversary of the building Standard Darmstadt, Germany. A tried and tested solution is already available for buildings of the future: the Passive House Standard combines maximum efficiency with optimal comfort. How this works, was demonstrated by experts from all over the world on 22 and 23 April during the International Passive House Conference in Darmstadt. This event also marked an anniversary: 25 years ago, the world's first Passive House building was built just a few kilometres away from the congress centre. The sustainability of this concept was substantiated by a new study that was presented at the Conference. The inhabitants of the first Passive House building in the Darmstadt city district of Kranichstein first moved in in 1991. 25 years of user experiences are available, as well as measurement reports and specific values relating to the durability of the separate systems. Statistical evaluation has shown a stable heating consumption of less than 9 kWh/(m²a) on average – this is less than a tenth of the consumption in conventional residential buildings in Germany. A further airtightness test, thermographic imaging for detecting thermal bridges and sampling the insulation were part of the follow-up investigations. The outcome was clear: "Even today, everything functions exactly as it did the first day. The passive systems are simply less susceptible to faults", says Dr. Wolfgang Feist, Director of the Passive House Institute. Precisely because this highly efficient building Standard has already delivered first class results for a quarter of a century, at the International Conference one could not only look back at the beginnings, but also set sights to the future.

    Beal_Text 12/12/05 5:50 PM Page 8 one The American Occupation and Agents of Reeducation 1945-1950 henry cowell and the office of war information Between the end of World War I and the advent of the Third Reich, many American composers—George Antheil, Marc Blitzstein, Ruth Crawford, Conlon Nancarrow, Roger Sessions, Adolph Weiss, and others (most notably, Aaron Copland, Virgil Thomson, and Roy Harris, who studied with Nadia Boulanger in France)—contributed to American music’s pres- ence on the European continent. As one of the most adventurous com- posers of his generation, Henry Cowell (1897–1965) toured Europe several times before 1933. Traveling to the continent in early June 1923, Cowell played some of his own works in a concert on the ship, and visiting Germany that fall he performed his new piano works in Berlin, Leipzig, and Munich. His compositions, which pioneered the use of chromatic forearm and fist clusters and inside-the-piano (“string piano”) techniques, were “extremely well received and reviewed in Berlin,” a city that, according to the com- poser, “had heard a little more modern music than Leipzig,” where a hos- tile audience started a fistfight on stage.1 A Leipzig critic gave his review a futuristic slant, comparing Cowell’s music to the noisy grind of modern cities; another simply called it noise. Januar 2021 um 0.00 Uhr gestoppt. Grund ist der Ausschluss von Sicherheitsrisiken, die eintreten könnten, sobald die Flugbewegungszahlen ansteigen. Dies hat die DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH angekündigt. Ab diesem Zeitpunkt werden für Abflüge in Richtung Süd-Ost die Abflugstrecken „AMTIX-lang“ sowie die nach wie vor bestehende Strecke „AMTIX“-kurz vom Parallelbahnsystem genutzt. Was hat der Probebetrieb gezeigt? Die Flugverläufe im Probebetrieb zeigen einerseits die vorgesehene Entlastung von Darmstadt Arheilgen und Kranichstein. Hier wird der geplante Korridor sowohl im Bereich von Mörfelden- Walldorf, dem entscheidenden Segment zwischen Darmstadt-Wixhausen und Erzhausen sowie der anschließenden Umfliegung von Darmstadt-Arheilgen und Darmstadt-Kranichstein gut eingehalten. Anhand der Flugspuren ist andererseits aber auch zu beobachten, dass nicht unerheblich viele Flugzeuge im darauffolgenden dritten Kurvensegment im Bereich von Messel das geplante Verfahren in Richtung Osten verlassen. Weitergehende Auswertungen haben ergeben, dass die in Richtung Osten / Messel überschießenden Flugzeuge bereits heute vereinzelt und ungewollt in den Anflugsektor einfliegen. Diese Situation
