ABSTRACT This thesis examines a group of terracotta sculptures attributed to an artist known as the Master of the Unruly Children. The name of this artist was coined by Wilhelm von Bode, on the occasion of his first grouping seven works featuring animated infants in Berlin and London in 1890. Due to the distinctive characteristics of his work, this personality has become a mainstay of scholarship in Renaissance sculpture which has focused on identifying the anonymous artist, despite the physical evidence which suggests the involvement of several hands. Chapter One will examine the historiography in connoisseurship from the late nineteenth century to the present and will explore the idea of the scholarly “construction” of artistic identity and issues of value and innovation that are bound up with the attribution of these works. -

Cooper On December 15, 1843, the man who would become Hiram Powers’s most distinguished private patron visited the artist’s studio for the first time.[1] Anatole Demidoff, Prince of San Donato, one of the greatest collectors of the age, had come to see for himself the work of the much-talked-about American sculptor in Florence.[2] For Powers (1805–73), the visit by such a notable person would have been cause for excitement at any time, but at this moment it held special promise. Although Powers’s creative energy was at a high point, the state of his finances was precarious. He had orders for scarcely a half-dozen portrait bust commissions and none for a statue of an ideal subject. He was seriously considering abandoning his career and returning to his home in Cincinnati, Ohio.[3] Prince Demidoff had a taste for contemporary marble sculpture. He admired the nearly finished plaster model of The Greek Slave and saw the marble block that was already being prepared—no version had yet been carved—but to Powers’s great disappointment, he left without placing an order. -

Nell’anno accademico 1993-1994 ha conseguito, con il massimo dei voti e la lode, il Diploma di specializzazione in Archeologia e Storia dell’arte presso la Scuola di specializzazione dell’Università degli Studi di Siena con una tesi in Storia dell’arte contemporanea dal titolo Tito Sarrocchi scultore (1824-1900), relatore il prof. Enrico Crispolti. Nel luglio 1991 si è laureato in Estetica all’Università degli Studi di Siena con il massimo dei voti e la lode discutendo una tesi dal titolo Artemide, Selene, Ecate: 1870-1910, studio sull’iconografia della donna nell’arte della fine del secolo XIX, relatore il prof. Alberto Olivetti. Si è diplomato nel 1985 presso il Liceo classico Enea Silvio Piccolomini di Siena e successivamente si è iscritto al Corso di laurea in Lettere Moderne, indirizzo artistico, della Facoltà di Lettere e Filo- sofia dell’Università degli Studi di Siena. ATTIVITÀ PROFESSIONALE Dal 1 ottobre 2015 dirige la Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria di Perugia e il Polo Museale Regionale dell’Umbria.
