THE HOLY GOSPEL + Matthew 28:16-20 Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

HOMILY The Rev. Dr. Richard Burden A period of silence for reflection follows the homily.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: Nicene From Enriching Our Worship

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 6

HYMN: Dear Lord and Father of mankind Hymnal 653

WE PRAY FOR THE WORLD AND THE CHURCH

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Intercessor Creator God, who loves us more than the most wise, compassionate earthly parent loves their children, we come before you, some of us with steadfast belief in your presence, others joining the disciples in doubting your existence. We beseech you to open our hearts and minds, that we may search for and find the truth of your presence in our lives as we pray for the Church, the world, ourselves, and others saying: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Son of God, we come to you with hearts filled with gratitude for the church. We pray especially for our bishops, Alan and Gayle, and our pastors Richard and Anoma. Continue to fill them with the courage to speak truth to power. We give you thanks for our music minister, Stephan, and for Elizabeth’s sublime singing. We ask you to be with Tammy, our new family minister, as she prepares to become a part of our family. Son of God, we miss our building! We miss the loving and warm connections we have with each other in meetings and over coffee and in worship. Remind us that we will be reunited again, strengthened in the ways we have been the church in our homes, our communities, and in the world. Please add your prayers for the church … Lord, in your mercy, People Hear our prayer.

7

Intercessor Spirit of God, our world is fractured. Hatred, violence, and fear pervade the universe. We pray for the leaders of all nations. Pour down your wisdom, grace, and healing upon them that compassion and clear-thinking will prevail. Grant us curiosity about our anger at those with whom we disagree and keep us mindful that they, too, are beloved by you. Please add your prayers for all in authority… Lord, in your mercy, People Hear our prayer.

Intercessor Loving God, in whose image we were created, we are distraught and overwhelmed by the reality of our world … grant us the grace and grief to take a knee or stand with people of color who are calling us to repentance … and fill us with courageous hope to show with our words and our lives what it truly means to be Christ’s followers in this world. Lord in your mercy, People Hear our prayer.

Intercessor Trinity of Love, surround with your boundless love those who fear for themselves and their loved ones. We give you untold thanks for all who are serving others at great risk to themselves. May those who are lonely or alone be warmed by an awareness of your compassionate presence. We pray for all who have died, those unknown and unmourned and those deeply missed. Please add your prayers for all who suffer and all who have died … Lord in your mercy, People Hear our prayer

Presider Holy God, you sent your Son into the world that we might live through him. May we abide in his risen life so that we may love one another as he first loved us, and that we may know the fulness of joy. Amen.

The Prayers of the People are written by the Daughters of the King.

LITANY OF PENANCE From the Standing Commission for Liturgy and Music Presider Dear people of God, our history is marred by oppression, by the enslavement of those who differ from us, and by the forces of racism that attack human dignity. The sin of racism is woven into our lives and our cultures, in small and great ways, in things done and things left undone. As followers of Christ, we reject racism and the oppression of other human beings. In building Christ’s beloved community, we must strive to love all people, respect all people, and work for the good of all people. We must stand alongside God’s children of every race, language, and culture and work together as agents of justice, peace, and reconciliation. In the assurance of our forgiveness, let us kneel before God and humbly confess our sins: our participation in racism, our privilege based on racism, and our perpetuation of racism.

Silence is then kept for a time, all kneeling.

Presider God the Father, you freed your people from slavery in Egypt, yet the legacy of slavery deforms our lives today. People Have mercy on us. Presider God the Son, you prayed that all would be united in your love and service, yet the divisions among us rend your body. People Have mercy on us. Presider God the Holy Spirit, you inspire us to live peaceably with all, yet the stain of genocide and internment mars our striving for justice. People Have mercy on us. Presider We have harmed one another and the earth through negligence, greed, and self-interest. People Have mercy on us. Presider We have failed to condemn discrimination that leads to unrest. People Have mercy on us. Presider We have decried violence, while overlooking inequity and frustration from which it rises. People Have mercy on us. Presider We have practiced injustice for economic gain and have oppressed others to make a false peace. People Have mercy on us. Presider We have sought comfort in advantage for ourselves at the cost of injustice for others. People Have mercy on us. Presider We have welcomed solace over conflict and ignored the cries of those harmed by our comfort. People Have mercy on us. Presider We have grasped for this world’s goods, and been arrogant toward those who have little. People Have mercy on us. Presider We have not shared the good things we have been given, and blamed the poor for their poverty. People Have mercy on us. Presider We have been fearful and distrustful of those who are different from us. People Have mercy on us.

9

Presider We have divided ourselves from others, and refused to listen to or believe their experience. People Have mercy on us. Presider We have been indifferent to the pain and suffering of our sisters and brothers. People Have mercy on us. Presider We have held in contempt those who need our help, and not loved them with our whole hearts. People Have mercy on us. Presider We have been self-satisfied in our privilege, and denied our oppression of others. People Have mercy on us. Presider We have preferred order over justice, and isolation over the struggle for peace. People Have mercy on us. Presider We have quietly held good intentions, and kept silent the message of reconciliation. People Have mercy on us. Presider We have failed to act with courage for the sake of love. People Have mercy on us. Presider Lord have mercy. People Christ have mercy. Presider Lord have mercy. May Almighty God have mercy on us, grant us courage and conviction, and strengthen us to love others who are unlike us. May God, the Holy and Undivided Trinity, make us compassionate in our actions and courageous in our works, that we may see Christ’s Beloved Community in our own day. Amen.

Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.
