LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING Isaiah 61:1-3 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good tid- ings to the afflicted; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the cap- tives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to grant to those who mourn in Zion— to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. V. The Word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God.

PSALM Adtollite portas (Ps 24: 7, 8, 10) Chant, Francis Edward Gladstone (1845-1928)

Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye ever- | last-ing | doors: and the King of | glo-ry | shall come | in. Who is this | King of | glory? It is the Lord strong and mighty, even the |Lord| mighty · in | battle.

Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye ever- | last-ing | doors: and the King of | glo-ry | shall come | in. Who is this | King of | glory: even the Lord of hosts, | he· is the | King of | glory.

SECOND READING Hebrews 2:14-18 Since the children share in flesh and blood, Jesus himself likewise partook of the same nature, that through death he might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliv- er all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong bondage. For surely it is not with angels that he is concerned but with the descendants of Abraham. Therefore he had to be made like his brethren in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high in the service of God, to make expiation for the sins of the people. For because he himself has suf- fered and been tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted. V. The Word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God. Senex puerum Theodore N. Marier (1912-2001)

Alleluia. Alleluia. The old man carried the Child: but the Child governed the old man. Alleluia.

GOSPEL St. Luke 2:22-40

V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit. V. A reading from the holy according to Saint Luke. R. Glory be to thee, O Lord.

When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, the parents of Jesus brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) and to offer a sacrifice ac- cording to what is said in the law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. And inspired by the Spirit he came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law, he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, “Lord, now let your servant depart in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.” And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising of many in Isra- el, and for a sign that is spoken against (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed.” And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher; she was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years from her virginity, and as a widow till she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. And coming up at that very hour she gave thanks to God, and spoke of him to all who were looking for the of Jerusalem. And when they had performed everything according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth. And the child grew and became strong, filled with wis- dom; and the favor of God was upon him.

V. of the Lord. R. Praise be to thee, O Christ. RITE OF ORDINATION OF A BISHOP

VENI CREATOR SPIRITUS , Mode VIII

Come, Holy Ghost, Creator, come from thy bright heav’nly throne; come, take possession of our souls, and make them all thine own. Thou who art called the Paraclete, best gift of God above, the living spring, the living fire, sweet unction and true love. Thou who art sevenfold in thy grace, finger of God’s right hand; his promise, teaching little ones to speak and understand. O guide our minds with thy blest light, with love our hearts inflame; and with thy strength, which ne’er decays, confirm our mortal frame. Far from us drive our deadly foe; true peace unto us bring; and through all perils lead us safe beneath thy sacred wing. Through thee may we the Father know, through thee th’eternal Son, and thee the Spirit of them both, thrice-blessed three in One. To be glory, to the Son who rose from the dead, and to the Paraclete, for ever and ever. Amen. The People sit.

LAYING ON OF HANDS

In silence, Cardinal Müller imposes hands on the head of the Bishop-elect, invoking the power of the Holy Spirit, the same Spirit given by Christ to the Apostles. The Principal Co-consecrators and all the other impose hands, signifying that the ordination of a Bishop is a collegial act of the Order of Bishops, incorporating a new member into their College, for the service of the Church. PRAYER OF

While the Book of is held above the head of the Bishop-elect, the Prayer of Ordination is said. This ancient pray- er invokes the power of the Holy Spirit upon him and recalls the importance and role of the Bishop within the Church.

OD and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, G Father of mercies and God of all consolation, who dwell on high and look upon the lowly, who know all things before they come to be, and who laid down observances in your Church through the word of your grace; who from the beginning, foreordained a nation of the just, born of Abraham; who established rulers and and did not leave your sanctuary without ministers, and who, from the foundation of the world, were pleased to be glorified in those you have chosen:

All the other Bishops join in the following part of the prayer, with hands joined:

POUR out now upon this chosen one that power which is from you, the governing Spirit, whom you gave to your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, the Spirit whom he bestowed upon the holy Apostles, who established the Church in each place as your sanctuary for the glory and unceasing praise of your name.

Then Cardinal Müller continues alone:

GRANT, O Father, knower of all hearts, that this your servant whom you have chosen for the office of Bishop may shepherd your holy flock. Serving you night and day, may he fulfill before you without reproach the ministry of the High Priesthood; so that, always gaining your favor, he may offer up the gifts of your holy Church. Grant that, by the power of the Spirit of the High Priesthood, he may have the power to forgive sins according to your command, assign offices according to your , and loose every bond according to the power given by you to the Apostles. May he please you by his meekness and purity of heart, presenting a fragrant offering to you through your Son Jesus Christ, through whom glory and power and honor are yours with the Holy Spirit in the holy Church, now and for ever and ever.

All: Amen.

The People sit. ANOINTING OF THE BISHOP’S HEAD

The head of the new Bishop is anointed, signifying the full share in the priesthood of Christ which he has received through the Laying on of Hands and the Prayer of Consecration.

May God, who made you a sharer of the High Priesthood of Christ, himself pour out upon you the oil of mystical anointing and make you fruitful with an abundance of spiritual bless- ings.

PRESENTATION OF THE BOOK OF THE GOSPELS

Cardinal Müller receives the Book of the Gospels from Deacon James Barnett and then hands it to Bishop Lopes, saying:

Receive the Gospel and preach the word of God with all patience and sound teaching.

INVESTITURE WITH RING, MITRE, AND PASTORAL STAFF

Cardinal Müller receives the ring from Monsignor Peter Wilkinson and places it on the ring finger of Bishop Lopes’s right hand, saying:

Receive this ring, the seal of fidelity: adorned with undefiled faith, preserve unblemished the bride of God, the holy Church.

Then Cardinal Müller receives the mitre from Father Jeffery Loseke and places it on the head of Bishop Lopes, saying:

Receive the mitre, and may the splendor of holiness shine forth in you, so that when the chief shepherd appears you may deserve to receive from him an unfading crown of glory.

Lastly, Cardinal Müller receives the pastoral staff from Monsignor Jeffrey Steenson and gives it to Bishop Lopes, say- ing:

Receive the crosier, the sign of your pastoral office: and keep watch over the whole flock in which the Holy Spirit has placed you as Bishop to govern the Church of God.

Behold, how good and joyful a thing it is: brethren, to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down unto the beard: even unto Aaron's beard, and went down to the skirts of his clothing. OFFERTORY ANTIPHON Diffusa est gratia (Ps 45:2b)

Full of grace are thy lips: because God hath blessed thee for ever.

THE OFFERTORY

The Bishop the and then says:

Pray, brethren, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable unto God, the Father Almighty.

The People stand and respond:

May the Lord accept the sacrifice at thy hands, for the praise and glory of his Name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.

PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS

LORD, we beseech thee mercifully to hear our prayers: and that these gifts which we offer O unto thy divine majesty may be an acceptable offering in thy sight, do thou show forth on us the succour of thy loving-kindness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

The Bishop then begins the Eucharistic Prayer with the Dialogue.

The Lord be with you. People: And with thy spirit.

The Bishop, raising his hands, continues:

Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up unto the Lord. Bishop: Let us give thanks unto the Lord our God. People: It is meet and right so to do.

The Bishop, with hands extended, sings or says the Preface.

SANCTUS Missa super Dixit Maria – Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612) , Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt cæli et terra gloria tua. in excelsis. ✠ Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis.

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts: heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High. Blessed is he that cometh in the Name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

The People kneel. The Bishop, with the Principal Concelebrants, prays the Roman :

HEREFORE, most merciful Father, we humbly pray thee, through Jesus Christ thy Son our T Lord, and we ask, that thou accept and bless these gifts, these offerings, these holy and un- blemished sacrifices.

WE offer them unto thee, first, for thy holy Church: that thou vouchsafe to keep her in peace, to guard, unite, and govern her throughout the whole world; together with thy servant Francis, our Pope, and me, thine unworthy servant, and all the faithful guardians of the catholic and apostolic faith.

REMEMBER, O Lord, thy servants and handmaids [N. and N.] and all who here around us stand, whose faith is known unto thee and their steadfastness manifest, on whose behalf we offer unto thee, or who themselves offer unto thee this sacrifice of praise; for themselves, and for all who are theirs; for the redemption of their souls, for the hope of their health and well-being; and who offer their prayers unto thee, the eternal God, the living and the true.

UNITED in one , we venerate the memory, first of the glorious ever-virgin Mary, Mother of our God and Lord Jesus Christ; of Joseph her spouse; as also of thy blessed Apostles and , Peter and Paul, Andrew, James, John, Thomas, James, Philip, Bartholomew, Mat- thew, Simon and Thaddeus; Linus, Cletus, Clement, Xystus, Cornelius, , Lawrence, Chrysogonus, John and Paul, Cosmas and Damian, and of all thy saints; grant that by their merits and prayers we may in all things be defended with the help of thy protection.

THIS, then, is the of our service, and that of thy whole family, which we offer also for me, thine unworthy servant, whom thou hast kindly advanced to the Order of the Episcopate. We implore thee to accept it, Lord, and in thy mercy to preserve in me the gifts thou hast given, that what I have received from thy divine goodness I may fulfill by the aid of thy .

Celebrant and Concelebrants together:

VOUCHSAFE, O God, we beseech thee, in all things to make this oblation blessed, approved, and accepted, a perfect and worthy offering; that it may become for us the Body and Blood of thy dearly beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. WHO the day before he suffered, took bread into his holy and venerable hands, and with eyes lifted up to heaven, unto thee, God, his almighty Father, giving thanks to thee, he blessed, broke and gave it to his disciples, saying:

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT: FOR THIS IS MY BODY, WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU.

The Celebrant genuflects, shows the consecrated Host to the People, places it on the , and again genuflects in ado- ration. Then he continues:

LIKEWISE, after supper, taking also this goodly into his holy and venerable hands, again giving thanks to thee, he blessed, and gave it to his disciples, saying:

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT, FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD, THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT, WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR MANY FOR THE OF SINS. DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.

He genuflects, shows the Chalice to the People, places it on the , and again genuflects in adoration.

Then he says: :

And the People and Choir continue, acclaiming:

Celebrant with Concelebrants:

WHEREFORE, O Lord, we thy servants, and thy holy people also, remembering the blessed pas- sion of the same Christ thy Son our Lord, as also his resurrection from the dead, and his glorious ascension into heaven; do offer unto thine excellent majesty of thine own gifts and bounty, the pure victim, the holy victim, the immaculate victim, the holy Bread of eternal life, and the Chalice of everlasting salvation.

VOUCHSAFE to look upon them with a merciful and pleasant countenance; and to accept them, even as thou didst vouchsafe to accept the gifts of thy servant Abel the righteous, and the sacrifice of our Abraham; and the holy sacrifice, the immaculate victim, which thy high priest Melchisedech offered unto thee.

WE humbly beseech thee, Almighty God, command these offerings to be brought by the hands of thy holy Angel to thine altar on high, in sight of thy divine majesty; that all we who at this partak- ing of the altar shall receive the most sacred Body and Blood of thy Son, may be fulfilled with all heavenly and grace.

Celebrant alone:

REMEMBER also, O Lord, thy servants and handmaids, [N. and N.], who have gone before us sealed with the seal of faith, and who sleep the sleep of peace. To them, O Lord, and to all that rest in Christ, we beseech thee to grant the abode of refreshing, of light, and of peace.

TO us sinners also, thy servants, who hope in the multitude of thy mercies, vouchsafe to grant some part and fellowship with thy holy Apostles and Martyrs; with John, Stephen, Matthias, Bar- nabas, Ignatius, Alexander, Marcellinus, Peter, Felicitas, Perpetua, Agatha, Lucy, Agnes, Cecilia, Anastasia, and with all thy saints: within whose fellowship, we beseech thee, admit us, not weighing our merit, but granting us forgiveness;

THROUGH Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom, O Lord, thou dost ever create all these good things; dost sanctify, quicken, bless, and bestow them upon us.

BY whom and with whom and in whom, to thee, O Father Almighty, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory throughout all ages, world without end.

The People respond: Amen.

The People stand.

THE COMMUNION RITE

The Bishop says and the People continue with him:

As our Saviour Christ hath commanded and taught us, we are bold to say,

The Bishop alone continues:

DELIVER us, O Lord, we beseech thee, from all evils, past, present, and to come; and at the inter- cession of the blessed and glorious ever Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with thy blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and with Andrew, and all the Saints, favourably grant peace in our days, that by the help of thine availing mercy we may ever both be free from sin and safe from all distress. The People respond:

THE PEACE

The Bishop says:

O LORD Jesus Christ, who saidst to thine Apostles, Peace I leave with you; my peace I give unto you: Regard not our sins, but the faith of thy Church; and grant to her peace and unity according to thy will; who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

The Bishop says: The peace of the Lord be always with you. People: And with thy spirit.

The People may offer one another a sign of peace. The People kneel.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD

As the Bishop takes the Host and breaks it, he sings or says:

Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People: Therefore let us keep the feast.

AGNUS DEI Missa super Dixit Maria – Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612) , qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem.

PRAYER OF HUMBLE ACCESS

Then the Bishop, bowing profoundly, says with all who shall receive Communion:

E do not presume to come to this thy Table, W O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. The Bishop says aloud:

Behold the Lamb of God, behold him that taketh away the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are called to the Supper of the Lamb.

The People respond thrice:

Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof, but speak the word only, and my soul shall be healed.

The Bishop and Concelebrants take Holy Communion.

Praise the Lord. I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation. Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who have pleasure in them. (Antiphon)

Full of honor and majesty is his work, and his righteousness endures forever. He has caused his wonderful works to be remembered; the Lord is gracious and merci- ful. (Antiphon)

Gracious Mother of our Redeemer, for ever abiding Heaven’s gateway, and star of ocean, O succor the people, who, though falling, strive to rise again. Thou Maiden who barest thy holy Creator, to the wonder of all nature; ever Virgin, after, as before thou receivedst that Ave from the mouth of Gabriel; have compassion on us sinners.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

After Communion, all say together the following:

LMIGHTY and everliving God, A we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favour and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom, by the merits of the most precious death and passion of thy dear Son. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen. Then the Bishop says: Let us pray.

POSTCOMMUNION

RANT, we beseech thee, O Lord our God: that these holy mysteries, which thou hast given G unto us for the assurance of our salvation, may, by the intercession of Blessed Mary ever- Virgin, both in this life and in that which is to come, be profitable unto us for the healing of our souls; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

GUIDELINES FOR THE RECEPTION OF HOLY COMMUNION

For Catholics: As Catholics, we fully participate in the celebration of the Eucharist when we receive Holy Com• munion. We are encouraged to receive Communion devoutly and frequently. In order to be properly disposed to receive Communion, participants should not be conscious of grave sin and normally should have fasted for one hour. A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord without prior except for a grave reason where there is no opportunity for confession. In this case, the person is to be mindful of the obli- gation to make an act of perfect contrition, including the intention of confessing as soon as possi- ble (canon 916). A frequent reception of the of is encouraged for all.

For our fellow : We welcome our fellow Christians to this celebration of the Eucharist as our brothers and sisters. We pray that our common and the action of the Holy Spirit in this Eucharist will draw us closer to one another and begin to dispel the sad divisions which separate us. We pray that these will lessen and finally disappear, in keeping with Christ’s prayer for us “that they may all be one” (Jn 17:21). Because Catholics believe that the celebration of the Eucharist is a sign of the reali- ty of the oneness of faith, life, and worship, members of those churches with whom we are not yet fully united are ordinarily not admitted to Holy Communion. Eucharistic sharing in exceptional circumstances by other Christians requires permission according to the directives of the diocesan Bishop and the provisions of ( § 4). Members of the Orthodox Churches, the Assyrian , and the Polish National Catholic Church are urged to respect the discipline of their own Churches. According to Roman Catholic discipline, the Code of Canon Law does not object to the reception of communion by Christians of these Churches (canon 844 § 3).

For those not receiving Holy Communion: All who are not receiving Holy Communion are encouraged to express in their hearts a prayerful desire for unity with the Lord Jesus and with one another.

For non-Christians: We also welcome to this celebration those who do not share our faith in Jesus Christ. While we cannot admit them to Holy Communion, we ask them to offer their prayers for the peace and the unity of the human family.
