The Early History of the Lord’s Prayer by Bernard Robinson What can we discover of the origin, early development and use of Christianity’s most famous Prayer? Earliest Versions of the Prayer: Matthew 6:9-13 Our Father who art in the heavens, Hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in the heavens. Give [dos] us this day our epiousios bread, and forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven/ [hereby] forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil/the evil one. [For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory for ever. Amen.] Luke 11:2-4 Father, Hallowed be thy name, Thy Kingdom Come. Give [didou] us each day our epiousios bread, and forgive us our sins as we forgive every one who is indebted to us; and lead us not into temptation. Didache 8:2-3 Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. For thine is the power and the glory for ever. Why are there three differing forms? The simplest explanation is that Jesus taught his disciples this prayer, which was handed down orally and used liturgically. Each liturgical tradition preserved a slightly different wording, giving us these three versions. -

[Forms of Prayer to be used at Sea after Victory of Deliverance from an Enemy.] Collect of the 6th Sunday after the Epiphany. Collect of the 5th Sunday after Trinity. The Epistle: Philippians iv. 4-8, inclusive. The Gospel: St. John xii. 23-33, inclusive. ¶Before bidding the people to pray for the whole state of Christ’s Church militant here in earth, the Priest may say: Let us praise God for the great and glorious victory which he has been pleased to grant to us and to our Allies, and for the good hope of peace now shining through the clouds of war. Let us praise him for the faithfulness, bravery, and self-sacrifice of all who have fought and laboured for our deliverance, and, above all, for the memory and high example of the men who have died that we may live. Let us remember before God the solemn responsibility now resting upon the statesmen of the world, and pray that he may guide them by his spirit of counsel and of strength, and that by their endeavours peace and justice, freedom and order, may be established among all nations. -

Trinity 3 Gloria Patri 2015 Summer Sermons #3 Introduction: Today we consider the ubiquitous Gloria Patri. This ancient hymn of praise is one of the first things we memorize in liturgy: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. It is said at the end of every reading of the Psalms, and at the end of any canticle which does not contain in itself a reference to the Trinity. And so, it is said at every public liturgy of the church: Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer and Holy Communion. It is truly ubiquitous in Christian worship and has been since the 4th century, in both East and West. And why? This little doxology, this little song of praise exists to accomplish two things. First, the Gloria Patri exists and is so pervasive to ensure that we never forget the challenge of knowing God who is one and yet three. There is no more difficult doctrine to grasp than the Doctrine of the Trinity. The tendency of almost all heretics throughout history has been to demote the persons of God to lesser status: i.e. the Son becomes merely a man, and the Spirit becomes an impersonal force or power immigrating from God. Within the Church, we have often dealt with our intellectual challenge of the Trinity by simply forgetting about the Holy Spirit – out of sight out of mind. The Gloria Patri exists to constantly confront us with the central truth that God is Trinity. -
