    he region of Latin America is generally defi ned as the compilation of forty-two T independent nations from North, Cen- tral, and South America and the Caribbean. It represents an eclectic conglomerate of cultures with a common point of origin: the interaction between European colonizers, African slaves, and Native Americans following the arrival of Christopher Co- lumbus in 1492. Given time, each nation developed cultural traits that made them unique while continu- ing to share certain common traits. Music is one expression of this cultural back- ground. In the specifi c case of Latin American choral music, compositions are generally associated with festive and energetic characters, up-tempo music, and complex rhythms, often accompanied by folk or popular instruments—generally percussion and sometimes stringed instruments such as guitar, cuatro, charango, tres, vihuela, among many other variants of the Spanish Guitarrilla or the Portuguese Machete. With certainty, much of the choral repertoire from this region fi ts this description. There is also, however, a vast and signifi cant catalog of works written by Latin American composers that is unaccompanied or accompanied by piano or organ. Moreover, there is an important catalog of works for choir and orches- tral forces (large orchestras or chamber ensembles) that generally—but not always—represents a syn- cretism of western compositional techniques and regional cultural fl avors (melodies, rhythmic patterns, harmonic cadences, colors and textures, and at times folkloric instruments) from each particular country. Following is a brief exploration of this latter group of compositions written by Latin American authors for choirs and symphonic ensembles.

  • The Anglican Rosary
    The Anglican Rosary Praying the rosary is a tactile aid to focus on prayer. Our minds naturally tend to wander, and it can help to have something we can hold onto physically – sometimes, just the touch of an item dedicated to prayer can remind us of the peace of God and put us in a prayerful frame of mind. There is a great deal of symbolism woven into the design of the Anglican rosary. There are thirty-three beads representing the thirty- three years of Jesus’ life. The Cruciform beads form the cross and can also represent the four compass points of the earth. The seven beads of the Weeks can represent the seven days of creation, the day of the Sabbath, and the number seven is often used in the Bible as symbolic of perfection. To enter into prayer there is an Invitatory bead, much like we say an invitatory collect at the beginning of our services to invite us into worship. The rosary can be prayed alone or with a group. It is recommended a person pray around the circle three times – a symbolic number for the Trinity. Doing so also invites us to go deeper as distractions fall away. In general, the rosary is used in three basic ways: 1. Repetition of the same prayer or devotion. 2. Repetition of several different prayers in some pattern, sometimes interspersed with or accompanied by meditations whether spoken, silent or with music or chanting. 3. Meditation on a series of spiritual themes. When praying, the idea is to be unhurried and calm.

Thank you so much for your participation and support, it is truly our pleasure to work with your children and share God’s great gift of music with them. We are pleased to partner again with Kasey Vlasak who will be teaching elementary “Multicultural” art and High School “Watercolor” this fall. These classes will be offered throughout the morning, and students will be placed in a class so as not to conflict with choir and bells. Denise Wood and Heidi Wildes will be leading the choirs and rehearsals. Mrs. Wood is an experienced director of children's musicals and a proficient singer herself, and brings dedication and excellence to our program as a mentor to our student helpers and handbell/chimes director. Mrs. Wildes has a degree in piano performance and is a past member of the Chorister's Guild, a member of American Guild of English Handbell Ringers, a certified teacher of Kindermusik, and a private piano instructor. She and her husband Paul are developing the SDG Choir Program in the Chippewa Valley. Because of our registration delay due to COVID, the procedure to join us is this: please email Denise at [email protected] with your info today and then follow up by sending in the paperwork and money. This will allow her to begin immediately assigning art and ringing classes so we can begin rehearsals on September 23. You must be a member of CVHS forum to participate in choir.
