Kochi-682 014, India Field identification of scombroids from Indian seas U.Ganga and N.G.K.Pillai Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Kochi Scombroids are a diverse group of pelagic fishes ranging in size from about 30 cm to over 3 m in length. Most of them, especially the tunas and billfishes perform considerable and sometimes even transoceanic migrations. Being highly valued table fishes, they are of significant importance both as a commercial and recreational fishery. In Indian waters, this group includes, 1. Tuna and tuna-like fishes belonging to 6 genera, namely, Thunnus, Katsuwonus, Euthynnus, Auxis (tribe Thunnini) and the bonitos, Sarda and Gymnosarda (tribe Sardini) 2. Four genera of Billfishes, namely, Istiophorus, Makaira and Tetrapturus (family Istiophoridae) and Xiphias (family Xiphiidae) 3. Mackerels of the genus Rastrelliger (tribe Scombrini) and Spanish mack- erels of the genera Scomberomorus and Acanthocybium (tribe Scomberomorini) Species-wise field identification characters and line diagrams of these fishes are presented below: 1. TUNAS Euthynnus affinis (Little tunny); A medium sized coastal species. Upper part of body has numerous blue black broken wavy lines directed backwards and upwards while belly is sil very white. The first and sec ond dorsal fins are contiguous. A few conspicuous black spots are present on sides of body be tween pectoral and pelvic fins. Scales on body are confined to corselet and lateral line only. -

1 Introduction
1 Introduction Regime shifts have been observed and described for both, the North Atlantic and the North Pacific, and were the subject of Theme and Topic sessions on the annual meetings of ICES and PICES. In the marine realm, the term regime was first used by Isaacs (1976) to describe distinct climatic and/or ecosystem states and, as early as 1989, Lluch-Belda et al. (1989) stated that regime shifts are transitions between different regimes. There is no universally accepted definition. Lees et al. (2006) listed several, but none of them is quantitative. Criteria for definition are: sudden, high-amplitude, infrequent events, the number of trophic levels impacted by the shift and bio-physical impacts (Lees et al., 2006). A practical definition has been suggested by deYoung et al. (2004): regime shifts are changes in marine system function that are relatively abrupt, persistent, occurring at large spatial scales and observed at different trophic levels. It is important to note that the duration of the shift itself is much shorter than that of the regime following the shift. Regime shifts have occurred in all oceans and their occurrence has been widely accepted, however, the concept of regime shifts remains controversial (Hsieh et al., 2005; Lees et al., 2006; Beaugrand, 2009). The mechanisms underlying these observed changes are largely unknown (deYoung et al., 2008). Integrated physiological and ecological studies should be promising approaches to elaborate cause and effect (Alheit and Pörtner 2011). A better understanding of the nature of regime shifts is required so that they can be taken into account in the movement towards ecosystem-based management of living resources and their environments. -

Russo ABSTRACT Many cladists believe that a classification should strictly reflect a cladistic hypothesis. Consequently, they propose classifications that often differ markedly from existing ones and are potentially unstable due to phylogenetic uncertainty. This is problematic for economically or ecologically important organisms since changing classifications can cause confusion in their management as resources. The classification of the 44 genera of scombroid fishes (the mackerels, tunas, billfishes, and their relatives) illustrates this problem of instability. -

Collette National Marine Fisheries Service Systematics Laboratory National Museum of Natural History, Washington, DC 20560–0153, U.S.A. email: [email protected] The Scombridae is the largest and most advanced of the four families of scombroid fishes (Collette et al. 1984 [ref. 11421]), excluding the billfishes, now placed in the suborder Xiphioidei (Collette et al. 2001 [ref. 25629]). Body elongate and fusiform, moderately compressed in some genera. Snout pointed, premaxillae beaklike, free from nasal bones which are separated by the ethmoid bone; mouth rather large; teeth in jaws strong, moderate, or weak; no true canines; palate and tongue may bear teeth. First dorsal fin usually short and separated from second dorsal fin, depressible into a groove; finlets behind second dorsal and anal fins; pelvic fins moderate or small; caudal fin deeply forked with supporting caudal rays completely covering hypural plate. At least 2 small keels on each side of caudal fin base, a larger keel in between on caudal peduncle in more advanced species. Lateral line simple. Vertebrae 31–66. Body covered with small to moderate scales or a scaly corselet developed (area behind head and around pectoral fins covered with large thick scales) and rest of body naked or covered with tiny scales. Scombrids are swift, epipelagic predators; some species occur in coastal waters, others far from shore. -
