Press Release Mark Wallinger Study for Self Reflection Hauser & Wirth New York, 22nd Street 13 September – 27 October 2018 Opening reception: Thursday 13 September, 6 – 8 pm New York… Hauser & Wirth is pleased to present ‘Study for Self Reflection,’ Turner prize-winning artist Mark Wallinger’s first solo exhibition with the gallery in the United States. One of Britain’s foremost contemporary artists, Wallinger is recognized for his rich and complex body of work, spanning painting, sculpture, installation, printmaking, video, performance, and photography. This exhibition features new paintings and two large-scale sculptures presented for the first time to an American audience. The works on view extend Wallinger’s career-long engagement with ideas of power, authority, artifice, and illusion. The theme of reflection is central to Wallinger’s oeuvre; the artist deploys it to probe questions about the psyche and the self, and to challenge our attachment to our identities and the socio-cultural mechanisms that inform them. Entering the gallery, visitors are confronted with ‘Superego’ (2016), a sculpture composed of a mirrored triangular prism rotating atop a post. Inspired by the revolving New Scotland Yard sign, which marks the entrance of London’s police headquarters, ‘Superego’ directly references this symbol of authority; Wallinger interprets the sign’s constant motion as the unremitting and omniscient eye of law enforcement. In distilling this totem, Wallinger produces an enigmatic symbol of intimidation and dominance. While the sculpture’s seductive surface appeals to our own desire for self-reflection and recognition, its position above viewers’ heads denies direct access to our mirrored image. -

LONDON UNDERGROUND RAILWAYS 1913-32 James Fowler The York Management School University of York [email protected] A rapid deterioration in British railways’ financial results around 1900 sparked an intense debate about how productivity might be improved. As a comparison it was noted that US railways were much more productive and employed far more detailed statistical accounting methods, though the connection between the two was disputed and the distinction between the managerial and regulatory role of US statistical collection was unexplored. Nevertheless, The Railway Companies (Accounts and Returns) Act was passed in 1911 and from 1913 a continuous, detailed and standardized set of data was produced by all rail companies including the London underground. However, this did not prevent their eventual amalgamation into the London Passenger Transport Board in 1933 on grounds of efficiency. This article finds that despite the hopes of the protagonists, collecting more detailed statistics did not improve productivity and suggests that their primary use was in generating publicity to influence shareholders’, passengers’ and workers’ perceptions. -

SPECIAL STAMP ISSUE 25th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain Date of issue: 13 September 1965 ‘Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.’ With these words Winston Churchill paid tribute to the men of the Royal Air Force who defended Britain against the German air assault in the autumn of 1940. Only months after the retreat from Dunkirk, Britain faced perhaps the darkest days of the entire war as the Luftwaffe launched an all-out bombardment intended to pave the way for a German invasion. For the first time in the history of warfare, an entire battle was fought in the air: the Battle of Britain took place between 10 July and 31 October 1940, reaching its climax in mid-September when the German bombers began to blitz London. By the end of the battle, the RAF had lost 911 aircraft with 414 pilots killed; Luftwaffe losses totalled 1,733 aircraft. REQUEST FOR A SPECIAL STAMP ISSUE September 1965 marked the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, and the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) planned a special commemoration during Battle of Britain Week, an event that had been held annually since the war. On 11 May 1964 L G Johnson, a holder of the Distinguished Flying Cross and Deputy General Secretary of the Royal Air Forces Association, wrote to the Postmaster General (PMG), Reginald Bevins MP, with a request that the Post Office issue special stamps to mark the anniversary. He wrote: ‘This turning point in our history ... should not be allowed to pass uncommemorated, and one very appropriate way which would bring the occasion to the minds of people both at home and overseas would be the issue of a special postage stamp or stamps as is customary on similar anniversaries of national importance or interest.’ Despite Johnson’s assertion that stamps commemorating ‘similar anniversaries’ were the norm, D H Beaumont of the Postal Services Department replied that a Battle of Britain issue would not be possible, based on the Post Office’s policy regarding special stamps. -

1 Suburban Taxi Drivers’ Roadshow July 2016 – February 2017 2 Meeting the Team TPH General Manager Helen Chapman Head of Stakeholder Compliance Delivery Head of Policy Strategy and Relations Manager Infrastructure Manager Tom Moody Silka Kennedy-Todd Edgerton Rodgers Darren Crowson 3 Taxi and Private Hire Action Plan Enhancing Public Safety: We are bringing in a number of new measures to enhance public safety, including: • Quadrupling the number of on-street compliance officers on the streets of London • Requiring private hire drivers to pass an advanced driving test before they can be licensed or relicensed • Progressing measures to improve safety standards by implementing an enhanced topographical test for private hire drivers before they can be licensed or relicensed • Reviewing operator compliance costs to ensure licence fee structure for private hire operators reflects the cost of compliance activity • Looking into the feasibility of introducing a minimum three-year enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check for drivers, to guarantee a full and comprehensive period of criminal history is available. 4 Taxi and Private Hire Action Plan New initiatives for the taxi trade: • Providing taxis access to an additional 20 TfL bus lanes and writing to boroughs across London to ask them to consider access for an additional 40 bus lanes • Adding taxi information to our online journey planner • Card and contactless payment options were made mandatory on 31 October to make it even easier for customers to pay, while giving drivers the time they need to prepare • Delivering the Ranks Action Plan, including increasing the number of taxi ranks in London by 20 per cent by 2020 (from 500 to 600) • Giving taxi drivers better access to our facilities, such as toilets within our estate • Reviewing the annual taxi fares process to ensure drivers and customers get the best deals. -

Friday 12 October 2007 Institute of Historical Research, Senate House, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HU Abstracts of Papers Derek Keene: Building tall in London, 1066–1666 The paper will consider the reasons for building tall in London and the significance of tall buildings in the city’s landscape between the Norman Conquest and the Great Fire. In order to secure London the Normans added two great fortresses within the existing circuit of walls, one to the east and one to the west. Throughout the period the Tower of London was among the tallest buildings in the city, to which it was commonly regarded as a threat, but the impression it made on the skyline was diminished by its low-lying site. These towers, together with the city walls, bastions and gateways, were a key element in the city’s image, as represented in text and drawing. Mythological accounts of London added further tall towers, gates and episodes of fortification. Even in 1086, St Paul’s cathedral may have been taller than the Tower and certainly occupied a more prominent site. The new cathedral, erected after the fire of 1087 was more bulky and, once its spire had been completed, much taller: there appears to have been no taller building in London until 1964. The religious and cosmological ideas which informed this structure, likewise explain the tall towers of the many other churches in the city, which by 1220 had become a prominent feature rising well above the general level of building. Many residential and commercial buildings were also tall. Some private residences and guildhalls were certainly as bulky as the larger parish churches. -

BGORUG is grateful to London Overground for improving the direction signage to the rail replacement bus stops at Forest Road (Blackhorse Road station) and South Grove (Walthamstow Queen's Road station). BGORUG continues to provide direction signage to the rail replacement bus stops in Selbourne Road (Walthamstow Central) and rail replacement bus timetables to bus stops at Barking, Walthamstow and Crouch Hill. PLANNED STRIKE ACTION ON LONDON UNDERGROUND 28-30 APRIL Barking - Gospel Oak services are expected to be grossly overcrowded during peak times and London Overground are will operating crowd control and queuing measures at stations. BLACKHORSE ROAD is operated by London Underground and is expected to be open until 23:00 Mon - Wed and to open at 07:00 on Tues - Wed. London Overground trains WILL NOT CALL if the station is closed. The Victoria Line is planned to operate every 5 mins between Seven Sisters and Victoria with possible extension to Brixton. Seven Sisters station is a short walk from South Tottenham station. Passengers should allow a lot of extra time for their journeys and try to avoid travelling at all, especially during the morning and evening peaks.
