The purposes of this study are: 1) to examine the history of Banhu in northern China; 2) to classify banhu according to the difficulty of his playing skills; 3) to analyze selected music examples. This paper is a qualitative study, including relevant literature research, investigation, observation and interview. Data were collected from a field survey of one Banhu player, two banhu performance educators, and two enthusiasts. By means of field investigation, this paper analyzes the data collected by Banhu educationists and performing artists. The results of this dissertation are as follows: 1) the collection of data is used to collate and analyze the history of Banhu, including: the structure, sound, function, performance place and musical characteristics of different periods; 2) the difficulty of banhu techniques are used to summarize the classification of the technique. Banhu playing techniques fall into three categories: general, stylistic, and modern. 3) how to use banhu technique in music works through music examples.     Protection and Transmission of Chinese Nanyin by Prof. Wang, Yaohua Fujian Normal University, China Intangible cultural heritage is the memory of human historical culture, the root of human culture, the ‘energic origin’ of the spirit of human culture and the footstone for the construction of modern human civilization. Ever since China joined the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2004, it has done a lot not only on cognition but also on action to contribute to the protection and transmission of intangible cultural heritage. Please allow me to expatiate these on the case of Chinese nanyin(南音, southern music). I. The precious multi-values of nanyin decide the necessity of protection and transmission for Chinese nanyin. Nanyin, also known as “nanqu” (南曲), “nanyue” (南乐), “nanguan” (南管), “xianguan” (弦管), is one of the oldest music genres with strong local characteristics. As major musical genre, it prevails in the south of Fujian – both in the cities and countryside of Quanzhou, Xiamen, Zhangzhou – and is also quite popular in Taiwan, Hongkong, Macao and the countries of Southeast Asia inhabited by Chinese immigrants from South Fujian. The music of nanyin is also found in various Fujian local operas such as Liyuan Opera (梨园戏), Gaojia Opera (高甲戏), line-leading puppet show (提线木偶戏), Dacheng Opera (打城戏) and the like, forming an essential part of their vocal melodies and instrumental music. As the intangible cultural heritage, nanyin has such values as follows. I.I. Academic value and historical value Nanyin enjoys a reputation as “a living fossil of the ancient music”, as we can trace its relevance to and inheritance of Chinese ancient music in terms of their musical phenomena and features of musical form.

    Chinese Video Tape (3) 3-1 "Gusuxing" – Dizi (transverse flute) with ensemble. Song is based on melodies from music found in Jiangsu province. Note the lyrical quality that depicts a teahouse and garden. Ensemble also features the erhu (bowed lute), sheng (mouth organ), yangqin (hammered zither), zheng (plucked zither with movable bridges), and pipa (plucked lute). 3-2 "Shimian maifu" - Pipa solo (Lute) – famous solo piece that depicts an ancient battle. Performance techniques include tremolo (plucking the strings quickly with alternating fingers), stopping the string with the fingernails, and striking the body of the instrument to depict the sounds of war. 3-3 "Erquan yingyue" - Erhu with yangqin (zither). Erhu was originally used only for accompanying the voice or in ensemble settings but since the 1900s become a solo instrument as well. 3-4 "Yuzhuo changwan" – Zheng (zither) solo – song depicting a fisherman singing in the evening. Note use of pitch bending by pressing the strings (called an) and vibrato (called rou). 3-5 "Chunjiang huayeuye" - ten part instrumental ensemble suite. Depicts the mood of a river flowing on a spring night. Other instruments include a dongxiao (end-blown flute), erhu, sheng, yangqin, zheng, and pipa. The lead instruments are the dongxiao and the pipa. 3-6 "Paixiongwu" – excerpt from theatre work, depicts men walking down the street beating their chests. Originally a folk dance, it eventually made its way into the theatre. Accompanied here by a paiban (clapper), erxian (fiddle), dongxiao (flute), sanxian (lute), pipa, xiangzhan (small gong), nangu (drum), and gujiao (small gong). Dancers use a sibao ( clappers ), ruan (large, plucked lute), yugu ( drum ), and erxian (fiddle).

Erhu concerto is a type of music which was born under integration of Chinese and western cultures. It is one of the most typical solo concertos in Chinese national musical instruments. Since the establishment of new China, Erhu concerto has developed rapidly. It gained different development in four historical periods: before the reform and opening-up, 1980s, 1990s and the 21st century. Erhu concerto generates significant influence on development of Erhu music and occupies an important position in development history of Erhu music. Birth of Erhu concerto Since the 20th century, Erhu concerto born under multi-culture development is a kind of new music expression form. It derives from European music, but is different from European music. In 1930s, Erhu divertimento The Death of Yang Yuhuan created by Russian Jewish composer AapoHABUiajiyMOB (1894-1965) consists of 6 songs and adopts the form of Erhu and symphony orchestra. This is the earliest Erhu concerto recorded in the history and originated from the melody of self-created song Evening Scene of Ynag Yuhuan in 1936. In Yearbook of Chinese Music (2002), Mr. Zheng Tisi said in his memoirs that, this works was performed in public in Shanghai Lanxin Theater. The band was Shanghai Municipal Council Orchestra. The outstanding folk music performer Mr. Wei Zhonglei took charge of Erhu solo, and the composer was responsible for commanding. Such manifestation pattern of Erhu music was certain far-sighted in the development of world music and also reflected world culture had walked out of European cultural circle and went to other developing countries.

    Shenshen Cai Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne Guo Degang A Xiangsheng (Cross Talk) Performer Bridging the Gap Between Su (Vulgarity) and Ya (Elegance) Xiangsheng 相声 (cross talk), which has been one of the most popular folk art performance genres with the Chinese people since its emergence during the Qing Dynasty, began to lose its popularity at the turn of the 1990s. How- ever, this downward trajectory changed from about 2005, and it once again began to enthuse the public. The catalyst for this change in fortune has been attributed to Guo Degang and his Deyun Club 德云社. The general audience acclaim for Guo Degang’s xiangsheng performance not only turned him into a xiangsheng master and a grassroots cultural hero, it also, somewhat absurdly, evoked criticism from a few critics. The main causes of the negative critiques are the mundane themes and the ubiquitous vulgar baofu 包袱 (comical ele- ments) and rude jokes enlisted in Guo’s xiangsheng performance that revolve around the subjects of ethics, pornography, and prostitution, and which turn Guo into a signifier of vulgarity. However, with the media platform provided via the Weibo 微博 microblog, Guo Degang demonstrates his penchant for refined taste and his talent as an elegant literati. Through an in-depth analy- sis of both Guo Degang’s xiangsheng performance and his microblog entries, this paper will examine the contrasting features between Guo Degang’s artis- tic creations and his “private” life. Also, through the opposing contents and reflections of Guo Degang’s xiangsheng works and his microblog writings, an opaque and sometimes diametrically opposed insight into his worldviews is provided, and a glimpse of the dualistic nature of engagement and withdrawal from the world is revealed.

Five years on, her Carnegie Hall mainstage appearance with the internationally acclaimed Taipei Chinese Orchestra was both a chance to hear why, and, with the orchestra presenting four representative works in their U.S. premieres, the perfect introduction to the repertoire. Forgive the digression, but for those unfamiliar with the sound and makeup of a “Chinese Orchestra,” here’s a crash course. First, there are a number of key similarities with their Western cousins, chiefly the use of cellos and double basses to create the lower string sounds, but also the inclusion of harp and a common deployment in the percussion of timpani, cymbals, and tam tam. Then there are the similar but different instruments, like the bamboo flutes (the zhongdi and the dadi ), and an array of Chinese percussion, some of it familiar perhaps from “exotic” 20th-century scores like Turandot . Lastly, there are the uniquely Chinese instruments. An array of plucked lute-like instruments that include the pipa , the liuqin , the zhongruan, and the daruan (defined by their different sizes and different numbers of strings) sit alongside hammered and plucked dulcimers and zithers like the yangqin and the guzheng , which add to the characteristically glittering mid-range sound of the orchestra. At the apex of the sound sit the erhus , a phalanx of gentle two-string fiddles (held on the lap and bowed low down) that essentially take the place of violins and violas.

Abstract: As one of the representatives of folk musical instruments, Erhu is deeply loved by the general public. Affected by different geographical environments, Erhu has a strong local character in its musical style and performance techniques. These factors not only make the erhu expressive, but also make the music of the erhu more understandable. The material of Shaanxi Erhu music mainly comes from Shaanxi folk music. It not only has the commonality of general erhu music, but also has special local music personality in Shaanxi. This paper explores its artistic features through a brief analysis of the musical style and creative elements of Shaanxi erhu works. This summarizes the artistic value of the music creation and performance of Shaanxi erhu works, clarifies the positive influence of Shaanxi erhu works on the development of erhu art, and provides a direction for future erhu music creation. 1. Nowadays, it has a certain influence in domestic instrumental music performance and even on the international stage, so it must have its extraordinary significance.
