Ridgway Center The Matthew B. Ridgway Center for International Security Studies at the University of Pittsburgh is dedicated to producing original and impartial analysis that informs policymakers who must confront diverse challenges to international and human security. Center programs address a range of security concerns—from the spread of terrorism and technologies of mass destruction to genocide, failed states, and the abuse of human rights in repressive regimes. The Ridgway Center is affiliated with the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA) and the University Center for International Studies (UCIS), both at the University of Pittsburgh. The Ford Institute for Human Security is a constituent unit of the Ridgway Center. This working paper is a product of the Ford Institute for Human Security’s working group on “Immigration, Integration and Security: Europe and America in Comparative Perspective,” co-chaired by Ariane Chebel d’Appollonia and Simon Reich. Introduction Landmark events of global significance have repeatedly raised issues of policy convergence or divergence across nation states, as well as continuity or stability across time, or a combination of both. This is particularly true for events such as the end of the Cold War, 9/11, the area of immigration and integration policies, the politics of citizenship and multiculturalism. -

ASSIMILATION, PLURALISM AND MULTICULTURALISM: THE POLICY OF RACIAL/ETHNIC IDENTITY IN AMERICA Anita Christina Butera* In the spring of 1921, 19 year old Annamaria and her 16 year old brother, Giuseppe, had finally completed their voyage to the United States from the Italian town of Palermo. After disembarking from the cramped and unsanitary quarters of the steamship, they wearily endured the endless lines and official inspections of the Ellis Island immigrant processing sta- tions. With the successful end of the first phase of their "journey of tears," they began the next phase of social and cultural adaptation within the more comfortable boundaries of Little Italy. New national and social class identi- ties overlapped with familiar identities of region, village, and kin. -

The evidence from World Values Survey data Arno Tausch Abstract 1) Background: This paper addresses the return of religious Antisemitism by a multivariate analysis of global opinion data from 28 countries. 2) Methods: For the lack of any available alternative we used the World Values Survey (WVS) Antisemitism study item: rejection of Jewish neighbors. It is closely correlated with the recent ADL-100 Index of Antisemitism for more than 100 countries. To test the combined effects of religion and background variables like gender, age, education, income and life satisfaction on Antisemitism, we applied the full range of multivariate analysis including promax factor analysis and multiple OLS regression. 3) Results: Although religion as such still seems to be connected with the phenomenon of Antisemitism, intervening variables such as restrictive attitudes on gender and the religion-state relationship play an important role. Western Evangelical and Oriental Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism are performing badly on this account, and there is also a clear global North-South divide for these phenomena. 4) Conclusions: Challenging patriarchic gender ideologies and fundamentalist conceptions of the relationship between religion and state, which are important drivers of Antisemitism, will be an important task in the future. Multiculturalism must be aware of prejudice, patriarchy and religious fundamentalism in the global South. -

The article draws on thematic analysis of content from counter-jihad websites and interviews with movement activists, sympathizers and opponents, in order to characterize the counter-jihad’s organizational infrastructure and political discourse and to theorize its relationship to fascism and other far-right tendencies. Although the political discourses of the counter-jihad, Trumpian Republicanism and the avowedly racist “Alt-Right” are not identical, I argue that all three tendencies share a common, counterrevolutionary temporal structure. -

Australian Catholicism and Interfaith Dialogue Gerard V. Hall SM 1 Gerard Hall: Australian Catholicism and Interfaith Dialogue Preamble The term interfaith dialogue may be relatively new and, in the minds of some, not the best term to describe the positive interaction between people of various religious, spiritual and cultural traditions. However, rather than get ourselves hijacked over the best choice of words, we need to acknowledge some fundamental realities. The first is that cultures, societies and religions have evolved in relationship with—and, too often, conflict between—one another. The second is that, even in the darkest moments of religious and cultural conflict, there are outstanding examples of individuals who stood against the tide of hatred, division and intolerance. Throughout history, there are also examples of entire multi-religious societies living in relative harmony and peace, sometimes for centuries. At some level, interfaith dialogue has always been with us—even if it was sometimes looked upon with suspicion. The third reality is this: we now find ourselves at a new juncture in human history. Social historians note the final century of the second millennium was the most bloody in the history of human life. Wars, gulags and genocides fuelled by warped ideologies and despotic dictatorships, assisted by the new technologies of war, resulted in the death of some two billion human beings. The vast majority of these war victims were civilians.1 Nor can it be denied that religion played its role: often in its inability to stem the tide of violence and destruction that overtook entire nations and continents; sometimes through the direct inflammation of national and ethnic hatreds in the very name of 1 The euphemism for this mass-murdering of civilians is ‘collateral damage’. -

From the first Cameleer till recently Muslims killed their own meat. About 50 years ago Muslim butchers started appearing in Areas where Muslims reside to cater to their needs for Halal meat. Muslim migrants to this day buy fresh food and cook their own in preference to buying ready-made consumables. Each migrant prefer his own type of cuisine. However the second and third generation are requiring the same type of fast food as the rest of the population but in a Halal form When Muslim countries started buying meat from Australia in the early 60s they requested the animals to be slaughtered by Muslims and to be certified by the local Islamic organisation. Foreign Governments sent representatives to ensure this was done according to Islamic rites and to their specifications. In the 80s the Federal Government became involved in Halal certification. In fact each consignment of exported meat carries a Government Halal certificate endorsed by an Islamic organisation for authenticity. In the 90s with some Muslim countries achieving affluence they started asking for products other than meat to be exported to their countries to satisfy the local demands. Some requested Halal certificates for products other than meat, like Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
