Chemistry Lab Mr. Zamojski Q3 – Unknown Hydrate LAB PRACTICAL

Background: In the previous lab you heated copper (II) sulfate, pentahydrate (CuSO4•5H2O) to obtain anhydrous copper (II) sulfate (CuSO4). The difference in mass between the two samples was the mass of water that was removed from the hydrated compound. You then used this mass to calculate the percent water in your sample.

Purpose: The purpose of this activity is to practice problem solving skills and to use measurements and lab techniques to find the percent water in a specific hydrate.

Goal: Your grade for this lab will be determined by how close the percent water you measure or calculate is to the accepted percent water for your hydrate.

Your Grade = (100% – Your Percent Error) × 10 points

Complete as many trials as you need to determine the percent water in a specific hydrate. Your grade will come from your BEST trial.

Materials: goggles tongs disposable gloves ring stand & cover Epsom salts (MgSO4•7H2O) lighter pipeclay triangle digital scale wire mesh

Procedure: 1) Before you can attempt the practical, you must write the procedure you will follow for your first trial. a. In your procedure any time you are executing a process or taking a measurement include the equipment or tool you are using. 2) Once the instructor approves the procedure, you may proceed. 3) Record any measurements you make in the DATA section on PROCEDURE page. 4) Once you have your percent water, bring that value to the instructor. Your instructor will calculate your percent error and inform you of your grade. Record your percent error and your grade 5) If you are satisfied with your grade, you may clean up your lab station. If you are not satisfied with your grade, you may complete additional trials. a. Notify your instructor of any changes you plan to make to your procedure for additional trials.

Clean Up: *** Do NOT touch any hot equipment until it has cooled sufficiently.*** 1) All materials can be thrown out or poured down the drain. 2) Wash and leave to dry any used equipment. 3) Return any equipment to its appropriate location in the lab. 4) Wash your hands with soap and water. Then dry them with a paper towel.
