Remembrance of Things Past: Shakespeare’s Comedies on French Television Sarah HATCHUEL and Nathalie VIENNE -GUERRIN This essay explores how Shakespeare’s comedies were adapted, appropriated and transformed by French television, with a focus on the early days of television. The first striking fact is that, if one is to except stage productions that were filmed and then broadcast, Shakespeare has not been adapted for French television since 1980. In other words, it has been twenty-eight years since a Shakespeare play was last translated, directed and performed for the exclusive benefit of TV viewers. Shakespeare on French television is not our contempor- ary 1. Through the documentary research for this essay, we went back to a time when the mingling of Shakespeare with television seemed to be less daunting and more economically viable than it is today. From the end of the fifties to the seventies, French television offered a substantial cycle: Twelfth Night was directed by Claude Loursais in 1957, then by Claude Barma in 1962; Othello (dir. Claude Barma) appeared on the TV screens in 1962, soon to be followed by Much Ado About Nothing (dir. Pierre Badel), The Merry Wives of Windsor (dir. Roger Iglesis) and The Taming of the Shrew (dir. Pierre Badel) in 1964, by King Lear (dir. Jean Kerchbron) in 1965, and by Antony and Cleopatra (dir. Jean Prat) in 1967. The seventies saw the broadcast of Measure for Measure (dir. L’action s’est étendue avec Jeux Doubles de Cristina Comencini puis la saison dernière avec Les Embiernes commencent par Émilie Valantin. Presents Yasmina Reza’s The God Of Carnage Opening Night: Feb 15th 15, 16, 18, 19, 21, 22, 23, 25 February at 7 p.m. 17, 24 February at 4 p.m. at Teater Brunnsgatan 4 THE GOD OF CARNAGE - Following a playground altercation between two 11-year-old boys in an affluent London neighborhood, the parents agree to meet to discuss the situation civilly. However, the facade of polite society soon falls away as the two couples regress to childish accusations, bullying and bickering themselves. Originally written in French and entitled Le Dieu du Carnage, The God of Carnage premiered in 2006 at the Schauspielhaus in Zurich directed by Jürgen Gosch and it made its French-language debut at the Théâtre Antoine in Paris in January 2008 directed by the author. Reza’s long-time collaborator Christopher Hampton translated and adapted an English-language version that premiered at the Gielgud Theatre in London’s West End in March 2008 and the production won the 2009 Olivier Award for Best New Comedy. Hampton further adapted the script for an Americanized edition, which premiered on Broadway at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre in February 2009 and the production won Best Play (Reza’s second win). The international popularity of the play led to a film adaptation called Carnage, which premiered in Italy at the Venice Film Festival before being released in the United Stated in September 2011. Written by Reza with director Roman Polanski, the film starred Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, John C. Reilly and Christoph Waltz. Gender: The Hidden God in Yasmina Reza's Le Dieu du Carnage Abstract Most critics have analyzed acclaimed playwright Yasmina Reza’s Le Dieu du Carnage (2007) as a descent into savagery. This close examination of the play points to the role of gender norms and stereotypes in causing the decline in civility. By taking part in a culture that worships gender ideals, the characters in Reza’s play police one another’s actions to ensure that everyone behaves like proper men and women. The act of attempting to successfully perform femininity or masculinity leads to the evening’s disastrous events. -

‘ART’ Director Notes, Michael Butler CENTER REPERTORY COMPANY Michael Butler, Artistic Director Scott Denison, Managing Director There are three great unanswered questions in the world: “Is there a God?” “Do aliens exist?” And “What is art?” presents Some time ago I visited the High Museum in Atlanta. It’s an excellent small museum. They’ve got a Picasso and a couple of other 20th century heavyweights hanging on the walls. But the highlight for me was the Ad Reinhardt painting. Reinhardt was an American abstract expressionist best known for his monochromatic canvases in black, much like the white painting that stirs up so much trouble in Yasmina Reza’s play ‘ART.’ In Ms. Reza’s play, Marc is deeply disturbed when his friend Serge buys an expensive white painting. A third friend, Yvan, tries to hold the friendship together and things get sticky as the glue of male bonding comes undone. It’s a funny, surprisingly complex play about men, written by a woman, one that explores what can happen when someone close to you, someone you think you know, does something completely unexpected. Like buy an all-white painting for a lot of money. ‘art’ The High Museum was showing one of Reinhardt’s black paintings. It was a canvas about 4 by 5 feet, pretty much all black but if you looked closely and patiently, it was possible to detect hues and textures, and possibly even some lines or patterns within it, and perhaps what looked like the shape of a cross.
