ToS on Green Jobs in the Forest Sector: Action Plan 2014-2016 37th Joint Working Party on Forest Statistics, Economics and Management 18-20 March 2015, Geneva, Switzerland Green Forest Jobs: general context • Resource-efficient green economy and EU Policies, • Forest Policies in a Green Economy, Forest Trends, Strategies and Forestry Programmes • New EU Forest strategy, the Rovaniemi Action Plan for the Forest Sector in a Green Economy adopted at ECE/FAO • Increasing employment in the forest sector by the creation of green sustainable jobs • Educating,upskilling and training the forest sector workforce to avail of the latest technological advances and innovative developments in forestry Geneva-Workshop June 2014 The current situation on green jobs in the forest sector was evaluated and the following recommendations were elaborated (at the Geneva-Workshop hold in June 2014): Economic recovery • Make forestry operations profitable Innovation, new action fields and knowledge transfer • Strenghten R&D in forest work/technology concerning major trends (e.g adaptation to climate change ) by relevant studies, pilot projects and knowledge transfer • Support/stimulate improvements/innovation in forestry work/technology (e.g modern planning, mechanised harvesting operations and IT) • Core aspects of forest work & technology should be the focus (e.g more efficient and effective high.tech logging operations), in general: resource efficiency of all activities in the entire forest sector • Medical doctors and health professionals should be made more aware of the ecotherapeutic benefits of forests • Universities and other teaching and training institutions should amend, adjust and adapt their curriculum programmes to cater for the educational and training needs of those engaged in the Green Forest Jobs Sector Recommendations based on the Geneva-Workshop Strenghten politics • Ideally there should be a minister for forestry in each country • More publicity films should be made (e.g. -

Nothing is more empowering than having a job 2 Goals GREEN FORESTS JOBS The goal of our ToS activities is to identify and list existing and potential green forest jobs in the forest sector. Based on an analysis of the actual situation and on future challenges, our 2017 target is to elaborate on the potential for green jobs in the forest sector and to present our findings and recommendations to the Member States who will be attending Las2017 in Warsaw, Poland this October. By early 2018, we expect to publish our ‘ToS Report on Green Forest Jobs in the UNECE Region’ 3 Trends in the forest sector - employment GREEN FORESTS JOBS . Employment Over the period 2000-2010, employment in the forest sector in the ECE region decreased by 21%. In forest management, fungi have traditionally been viewed as undesirable and pathogenic. However, today we realize that many beneficial fungi are crucial to our forest's health. Existing research and published literature show the importance of fungal diversity and the need to develop novel management practices that consider fungal communities. These fungal communities are imperative to the success of our forests in the face of climate change. Managers will need to adapt and work amid fungal communities for our forests to remain healthy and robust. Management practices that promote fungal diversity may be more effective in addressing issues related to climate change than traditional management. Looking at possible solutions at three different levels: architecture, food and waste management ABSTRACT Before we were a small world on a big planet, which meant that the planet could handle human’s exploitation of it. However, now we are a big world on a small planet; the Earth is under enormous pressure with our over-exploitation. Scientist realized that we need to get a better understanding of Earth’s systems, how they relate and what their limits are. The planetary boundaries framework was created. The only way to be sustainable is to keep within those boundaries. There is a need for innovative solutions based on nature. The purpose of the thesis is to find solutions based on nature that can help us stay within the planetary boundaries and make the relationship between the technosphere and the biosphere more mutualistic. Research has shown that fungi have potential within a wide range of areas. Some examples of these are: some important medicines come from fungi; fungi can be used to remediate contam- inated habitats; with fungi, you can create different kinds of meat substitutes and cultivate edi- ble mushrooms; with fungi, you can create materials such as mycelium composites and leather substitutes. This study is looking at what role these applications of fungi can play in creating an architectural intervention within the planetary boundaries. -

As a result, women are still underrepresented. Utilizing interviews, we found that greater representation of women in the forest sector is considered as one of the best solutions to attract young women to the industry. However, it presents a ‘Catch-22’ in which the solution is denied by a circumstance inherent in the problem. We propose to change the forest sector image by tackling gender issues such as sexual harassment, and by simultaneously focusing on the good features of the industry such as its important role in a sustainable future and solutions for the modern world. For example, the sector can show its role in mitigating climate change and in supporting a more sustainable future economy (e.g., bioeconomy and green jobs) and urban built environment. In addition, changing the forest sector image should be supported with better marketing and promotion in various platforms, both online and offline. The sector also needs to utilize social media to attract younger generations.
