The Wombles were a British novelty pop group, featuring musicians dressed as the characters from children's TV The Wombles The The Wombleswhich in turn was based on the children's book series by Elisabeth Beresford. Songwriter and record producer Mike Batt wrote and performed many successful albums and singles as 'The Wombles' with other collaborators, including the series' theme tune. Inthe band played at The Wombles Glastonbury Festival. Filmfair acquired the television rights to The Wombles and commissioned Batt to write the theme song. He waived the flat fee for writing a single song and instead secured the rights to write songs under the name 'The Wombles'. The band released several albums and singles. All four studio albums went gold [2]and four of the singles reached the Top 10 in the UK Singles Chart. A song called "Wombling U. The Wombles first aired on 5 February The series was based on the books written by Elizabeth Beresford, about a secretive group of creatures who live beneath Wimbledon Common, collecting and recycling the litter The Wombles behind by the "everyday folk". The Wombles was ensured a large crossover audience as it was shown at the end of The Wombles programmes, just before the news. With the aid of Mike Batt's catchy theme tune - which was the first top 10 hit of many for The Wombles pop group - it became a great success. Ivor Wood designed The Wombles for television with pointed snouts and floppy ears, distinct from the teddy bear-like animals illustrated in the original book. Bernard Cribbins narrated the series and did all of the voices for the different characters, which Beresford had based on members of her family. The theme of the programme was not lost on children, gave a great boost to the idea of recycling, and perfectly fitted the growing awareness of environmental issues.
