Finally, while I have greatly benefited from the interdisciplinary expertise of my supervisors, all flaws and inaccuracies in this dissertation are solely mine. iv Preface The primary objective of this dissertation is to explore the mismatch between Islam as a distinct, “ethnicised” Somali identity and the character of the postcolonial secular state in Somalia, a phenomenon at the heart of the prolonged political instability, but often understudied. To illustrate the role of Islam in Somali identity, and explore aspects of pre- colonial pastoral authority, city-caliphates and the traditional conceptualisation of autocracy, leadership and the Somalis general world view, I have used oral poems, a few of which are already published in English while I inadequately translated others for the first time. From the onset, all Sayid Maxamad Cabdille Xasan’s “poetic polemics,” used in chapter three are written in Aw Jaamac Cumar Ciise’s book: “Diiwaanka Gabayadii Sayid Maxamad Cabdille Xasan, the most comprehensive anthology of Somalis’ greatest poet of all time, but I have largely adopted Said Samatar’s English translation of some of these poems. On reading names and terms written in Somali, consonants X, C, and Dh are rendered in English as following: h instead of x, a instead of c and d instead of dh. On oral literature, the poems used in this dissertation are issue-oriented and are not less accurate in illustrating historical events or political upheavals than the written literature. Furthermore, there are three Somali scholars who share one surname, “Samatar,” so, to indicate whose work I’m quoting; I have used their first names together with the surnames. Where I have quoted from work written in Somali, I retain the authors’ names in Somali, therefore, Halane is written as Xalane and Aw Jama’a is written as Aw Jaamac, otherwise I have italicised Somali terms. Where a poem has been translated, I have indicated the translator and where no translator appears in the dissertation before the verses, I have translated the poem for the first time. Given the length of Somali oral poetry, no poem is adopted in its entirety. Therefore, no translation is adequate or corresponds to the original version. I have only utilised a portion or a few stanzas of a specific poem or song to illustrate a particular event or historical rupture.     The Security Bazaar The Security Bazaar Aisha Ahmad Business Interests and Islamist Power in Civil War Somalia Many intractable civil wars take place in countries with large Muslim populations.1 In these pro- tracted conºicts, Islamists are often just one of many actors ªghting in a com- plex landscape of ethnic, tribal, and political violence. Yet, certain Islamist groups compete exceptionally well in these conºicts. Why do Islamists some- times gain power out of civil war stalemates? Although much of the existing research points to either ethnic or religious motivations, I argue that there are also hard economic reasons behind the rise of Islamist power.2 In this article, I offer a micro-political economy model of Islamist success in civil war that highlights the role of an important, but often-overlooked, class: the local busi- ness community. The convergence of business and Islamist interests is relevant across a wide range of cases of contemporary civil war. In present-day Syria and Iraq, jihadi groups have built strong ties to smuggling and criminal networks to fund their Aisha Ahmad is Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto and a former fellow of the International Se- curity Program at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard University. Turkish literature (Turkish: Türk edebiyatı or Türk yazını) comprises both oral compositions and written texts in the Turkish language, either in its Ottoman form or in less exclusively literary forms, such as that spoken in the Republic of Turkey today. The Ottoman Turkish language, which forms the basis of much of the written corpus, was influenced by Persian and Arabic and used the Ottoman Turkish alphabet. The history of the broader Turkic literature spans a period of nearly 1,300 years. The oldest extant records of written Turkic are the Orhon inscriptions, found in the Orhon River valley in central Mongolia and dating to the 7th century. Subsequent to this period, between the 9th and 11th centuries, there arose among the nomadic Turkic peoples of Central Asia a tradition of oral epics, such as the Book of Dede Korkut of the Oghuz Turks—the linguistic and cultural ancestors of the modern Turkish people—and the Manas epic of the Kyrgyz people. Beginning with the victory of the Seljuks at the Battle of Manzikert in the late 11th century, the Oghuz Turks began to settle in Anatolia, and in addition to the earlier oral traditions there arose a written literary tradition issuing largely—in terms of themes, genres, and styles— from Arabic and Persian literature.

    Home | Contact us | Links | Archives | Search Issue 570-- 29th Dec 2012 - 4th Jan, 2013 Editorial: The Mad Mullah Revisited Abdirahman Farah ‘Barwaqo’s latest book “Sooyaal: Ina Cabdalla Xasan Ma Sheekh Bu Ahaa Mise…?” is on Muhammad Abdille Hassan and starts with an intriguing title. It asks the question whether Muhammad Abdille Hassan was a religious sheikh or something else. That something else is not spelled out in the title and is left to the reader to guess. The implication is that by reading the book one will find the answer. One however, does not have to get too far into reading the book to know the answer which is that Muhammad Abdille was far from being a sheikh, and was in fact a ruthless killer who consistently violated Islamic principles as well as basic human morality. Mr. Barwaaqo builds the case against Muhammad Abdille Hassan in a very methodical fashion beginning with showing how the people of Berbera initially welcomed him and helped him settle there but when he started making provocative claims and they found out that his religious knowledge was deficient they rejected him and that was why he left Berbera. Mr. Barwaqo also compares Muhammad Abdille Hassan with other Somali religious leaders and finds him wanting by showing that while Sheikh Madar and his fellow members of the Qadiriya Sufi order at Jameecoweyn laid the basis of the city of Hargeysa and established the first Somali city that was governed according to Islamic law, and while other religious leaders such as Yusuf al- Kawnayn, Sheikh Ibrahim Abdalle Mayal, Sheikh Muhammad Abdi Makahil, Sheikh Abdirahman Sheikh Nur, and Sheikh Uweys Bin Muhammad al-Barawi contributed to Somali knowledge by devising orthographies, Muhammad Abdille Hassan was busy bringing death and destruction to Somalis.
