3 INTRODUCTION

APPLICATION The United Grand Lodge of Queensland Dress Manual applies to all members of UGLQ. This includes Craft Lodge members, Grand Officers and District Grand Officers. The UGLQ Dress Manual is the authority to wear UGLQ Masonic dress, the wearing of all items of dress and regalia and provides the policy and information for UGLQ Masonic Dress.

VARIATIONS Permanent variations to the UGLQ Dress Manual are not to be made without the prior approval of the UGLQ Ceremonial Board. Temporary variations for specific occasions are to be approved by the Grand Master or Deputy Grand Master. Requests for dispensation must be in the hands of the Grand Secretary six weeks prior to the occasion.

4 CRAFT LODGE DRESS

1 CRAFT LODGE WINTER DRESS is permitted from 1st May to 31st August and is worn by brethren during this period in their craft Lodges when attired in their craft regalia. 2 CRAFT LODGE SUMMER DRESS is permitted from 1st September to 30th April and is worn by brethren during this period in their craft Lodges when attired in their craft regalia. 3 The prescribed Masonic Dress shall be worn by all brethren at all Lodge Meetings, Masonic events and Masonic social functions and where it is appropriate for Lodge attire to be worn. This especially applies to festive boards or installation , which are an integral part of a Lodge meeting.

6 COLLARS 4 The collars of the Officers of UGLQ working Lodges shall be Sky Blue ribbon, 100 mm wide with silver badges of office. 5 The collars of the Lodge Officers are to be worn in their own Lodge, when fraternally visiting other Lodges or where dispensation has been granted by the Grand Master to wear regalia in public processions or other events.

ALTERNATIVE WORKING LODGES 6 Lodges granted the right to work a UGLQ approved alternative ritual, when investing the Master and Officers at the Installation, may invest them with the approved collar of that Lodge. 7 The Aprons, Collars and Gauntlets of Scottish or Irish working Lodge officers and brethren may not necessarily be Sky Blue with silver badges. Scottish and Irish working Lodges may have approved aprons that have embroidered, or metal gilt jewels associated with the office. 8 Existing Scottish and Irish working Lodges are deemed to have received approval from the Grand Master for their regalia. 9 Lodges forming with resurrected warrants of Scottish, Irish or English Working Lodges will need to seek approval from the Grand Master for the brethren to wear other than Sky Blue aprons with silver badges of office.

APRONS 10 Entered Apprentice: A plain white lambskin from 360 to 440 mm wide, and from 300 to 360 mm deep with a flap or fall about 165 mm deep at point, and without ornament. The flap of Scottish working Lodges aprons may be semi-circular of similar depth. 11 Fellowcraft: The same as an EA, with the addition of two approved rosettes of Sky Blue or other colour appropriate to alternative working Lodges, one at each corner of the bottom of the apron. 12 Master Mason: The same as FC for UGLQ working Lodges, but with apron edged with 50mm Sky Blue ribbon; flap or fall edged with 38mm ribbon of same colour; an additional rosette on the flap; bound with 25mm ribbon, and 50mm silver tassels suspended with 50mm ribbon. Irish working Lodge MM aprons have 12mm silver braid centred on the edging ribbon.

7 13 Master and Past Master of Lodges: The same as MMs except with three levels or taus instead of rosettes. 14 Irish working Lodges WM and PM aprons retain the rosettes, have 12mm silver braid centred on the edging ribbon and have the Lodge badge in the centre.

WEARING THE APRON 15 The apron should always be worn so that no part thereof shall be hidden by . 16 This requirement does not apply to those brethren from Lodges working a Scottish or Irish ritual who have, as a matter of custom, worn their apron under their . 17 The apron shall be worn with the band at level.

8 GAUNTLETS 18 In UGLQ working Lodges, gauntlets of office may be worn by the Master, Immediate Past Master, Wardens, Director of Ceremonies, Deputy Director of Ceremonies and other officer positions where the Lodge has determined them as appropriate to wear.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS 19 Every brother should attend his Lodge in Craft Lodge dress. 20 Brightly coloured or patterned clothing is not appropriate. Only plain black or white clothing should be worn. White gloves are correct dress at meetings but are not mandatory. 21 Prohibition of Removing Bow Ties, Rolling Up Shirt Sleeves: At no time, either in the Lodge room or at festive boards, are bow ties to be removed, shirt sleeves rolled up, or braces worn without a jacket. 22 Daylight Lodges: Brethren of daylight Lodges are permitted to wear Craft Lodge Summer Dress all year. This may also include a soft white shirt with plain long dark or Masonic tie.

WINTER DRESS 23 Where regional conditions make wearing Craft Lodge Winter Dress uncomfortable, Lodges individually may determine, by the majority decision of their brethren, to wear summer dress on a year-round basis.

SUMMER DRESS - AREAS OF HOT CLIMATE 24 White coats/ are not required to be worn as part of summer dress where extreme climatic conditions determine. Where coats/jackets are not required to be worn, long sleeved shirts will be mandatory.

SHIRTS 25 Long or short sleeved soft white shirts are the preference. 26 Stiff wing-tip collars with pleated panel shirts, although not encouraged, may be worn with shirt studs. 27 Short sleeved shirts may only be worn under a coat/jacket.

9 UNIFORMITY OF DRESS 28 All Officers of a Lodge should always be uniformly dressed. 29 During the Summer period, the Master must decide at each meeting, prior to the opening of the Lodge, whether coats/jackets will be worn by himself and his Officers, so that all Officers will be similarly attired. 30 All members will need to be wearing long sleeved shirts.

SCOTTISH LODGE ATTIRE 31 Lodges that work an accepted Scottish ritual have approval for Lodge members and visitors to wear Scottish Lodge attire at Installation ceremonies and Installation Banquets only. 32 Wearing Scottish Lodge attire at regular Lodge meetings and at festive boards is not permitted. 33 On all other occasions where a Lodge deems it necessary that Scottish Lodge attire should be worn, application for dispensation must be made to the Grand Secretary six weeks prior to the occasion. 34 At all times the Scottish Lodge attire must comply with the standards set by the Scottish Australian Heritage Council. 35 Sgian Dubh associated with Scottish Lodge attire is permitted in the Lodge Room.

OTHER DRESS 36 Any Lodge seeking permission to wear different attire for a specific occasion or special reason may apply for dispensation from the Grand Master. The request for dispensation must be made to the Grand Secretary six weeks prior to the occasion.

WEARING OF LAPEL PINS 37 Brethren may wear only two lapel pins when attired in Craft Lodge Dress. Brethren are encouraged to wear the Square and Compasses lapel pin on their normal attire in public.

10 NAME BADGES 38 Name badges may be worn at Lodge meetings as well as at the festive board. All members of the Lodge should wear a similar design.

TAILS 39 Tails are only to be worn by brethren in Grand Lodge regalia. 40 Tails are not to be of the style.

THEMED ATTIRE 41 Themed attire such as black with white stripe shoes, white Eton jacket with black lapels, top , hats, beanies, , etc, and the use of walking canes as embellishments, are not permitted.

VISITORS 42 The admission of visitors is at the discretion of the Lodge Master and visitors’ dress should comply with the requirements of the Dress Manual.

15 COLLAR JEWELS OF ALTERNATIVE WORKING LODGES Lodge Officer Jewels of alternative working Lodges may vary from UGLQ working Lodges. Some examples are shown below:

16 LODGE JEWELS PRESENTATION OF JEWELS 43 Service jewels for 50, 60, 70 and 80 years of service are Grand Lodge jewels. 44 When presented in Lodge, the presentation of these jewels is to be done by a Grand Officer wearing Grand Lodge regalia. 45 Service jewels for 30 and 40 years of service are purchased by a Lodge and their presentation therefore is at the Lodge’s discretion. 46 The presentation of a Past Master jewel, Certificates, etc., when done in Lodge, are to follow the correct protocol, i.e.; 46.1 Presentations by Grand Officers wearing Grand Lodge Regalia, are conducted in the North-East; 46.2 Presentations between Lodge members are conducted in the South-East; and 46.3 Presentations by the Master are conducted in the Centre-East.

JEWELS OF THE MASTER 47 As the WM represents the Lodge, no personal jewels are to be worn during his term of office and he is to wear only the jewels of the Lodge. 48 The Master is to wear the only the following Lodge jewels: 48.1 The Masonic Homes Building Fund jewel, and/or 48.2 Restoration Fund jewel, with which the WM may have been invested at his Installation, and either the; 48.3 UGLQ Hall Stone collaret or, 48.4 UGLQ Bursary Foundation collaret or, 48.5 UGLQ Education Fund collaret.

PRESENTATION OF THE PAST MASTER’S JEWEL 49 Where a Master is proclaimed for a second term, he is not to be invested with a Past Master jewel. Only after a successor has been installed can he be a Past Master.

17 JEWELS OF LODGE BRETHREN 50 The following jewels may be worn by Lodge members who are entitled to wear them at all Lodge meetings: 50.1 Jewels from the Board of Benevolence irrespective of the grading. 50.2 The Grand Master’s Order of Service to Masonry collaret or breast jewels. 50.3 The Order of Service to Benevolence collaret jewel. 50.4 50, 60, 70, and 80 year service jewels presented by UGLQ and 30, and 40 year service jewels presented by Lodges to brethren. 50.5 Past Master jewels. 50.6 Special Services Rendered jewel. 50.7 The Lodge's own Centenary or Foundation jewel. 50.8 Active Grand Officer jewel or District equivalent. 50.9 Jewels of the Districts and of individual Lodges for which permission has previously been granted by the Ceremonial Board. 50.10 The 75th Anniversary jewel of UGLQ (by members who were financial members of UGLQ in the year of the 75th anniversary). 50.11 One jewel belonging to either the Mark Master Masons Degree or Royal Arch Degree. 50.12 The jewels awarded by the District Grand Lodges for donations to the District homes. 50.13 Jewels of a similar nature from other jurisdictions may also be worn. 50.14 Any other jewels approved by the Ceremonial Board. 51 Brethren shall wear their Masonic jewels on the left breast in the order from centre to outside: 51.1 Charity jewel, 51.2 OSM jewel 51.3 Service jewel, 51.4 Past Master jewel (from oldest to newest), and if room, 51.5 Active Grand Officer jewel or district equivalent, and 51.6 One jewel from either Royal Arch or Mark Master Masons.

18 52 Members holding Australian, Imperial or overseas Honours may, at their discretion, wear the jewel or regalia of that honour, at any Lodge meeting, UGLQ Communication or festive board. 53 Foundation jewels approved by the Ceremonial Board may only be worn by the foundation members of the Lodge. 54 Lodges wishing to issue a Centenary jewel must seek prior approval of the design and conditions of awarding from the Ceremonial Board. 55 Permission may be given for Lodges to strike breast jewels for less than 100 years, and once past that time, they may make further application for jewels or bars for 125 years, 150 years and so on.

WEARING JEWELS IN LODGE, FESTIVE BOARDS AND BANQUETS 56 The Master may wear the Lodge breast jewels and one collaret Masonic jewel at a festive board or banquet and when visiting other Lodges. 57 The Master may wear only one collaret Masonic jewel in the Lodge room at any one time. 58 Brethren are to remove their breast jewels prior to entering the festive board or installation banquet room. 59 Apart from jewels belonging to either the Royal Arch Degree or Mark Master Masons Degree, breast jewels relating to other Degrees, Orders or other organisations are not to be worn in the Lodge room. 60 The wearing of a breast jewel commemorating a special occasion such as a Lodge Centenary may be worn by the brethren at festive board or banquet on the night of presentation only. It may be then be worn in Lodge in perpetuity. 61 The wearing of 50, 60, 70, and 80 year service jewels is permissible at all Lodge meetings, festive boards and banquets. 62 It is customary for brethren presented with jewels at festive boards or banquets to continue to wear them until the end of the function.

19 PROHIBITED JEWELS 63 Excepting those awards approved under the Australian Honours and Awards system or approved by the Ceremonial Board from time to time, no honorary or other jewel, medal, device, or emblem which does not appertain to or be consistent with those degrees which are recognised and acknowledged by Grand Lodge as part of pure and antient Masonry, shall be worn in any Lodge. 64 No jewel, medal, device, or emblem from another country or jurisdiction shall be worn unless that jewel, medal, device, or emblem has been personally presented to the wearer of that jewel by an overseas or interstate Lodge or Grand Lodge.

20 GRAND LODGE DRESS DRESS FOR GRAND OFFICERS 65 The prescribed Masonic Dress is to be worn by Grand Officers at all Quarterly Communications, Grand Installations, Grand Proclamations, Grand Lodge visitations to Lodges, Masonic social functions and where it is appropriate for Grand Lodge attire to be worn. This especially applies to festive boards or installation banquets, which are integral parts of Lodge meetings. 66 GRAND LODGE WINTER DRESS is to be worn from 1st May to 31st August, and on other appropriate occasions. 67 GRAND LODGE SUMMER DRESS is to be worn from 1st September to 30th April.

22 GRAND LODGE - FULL DRESS. 68 At Grand Installations and Proclamations, the GM, PGMs, DGM, PDGMs, AGM and PAGMs may wear Tails, Black dinner suit pants, stiff white shirt with or without detachable collar, white bow tie, white , black socks, black shoes and white gloves.

WINTER DRESS FOR AGDDS 69 The following protocol applies for Assistant Grand Directors of Development: 69.1 Black Tails to official Grand Lodge meetings/functions; 69.2 Black Tails to Lodge Installation meetings; 69.3 Black tails, or dinner suit jacket or black Eton jacket and black bowtie, to regular Lodge meetings; and 69.4 The dress of the Lodge when attending Daylight Lodge regular meetings.

TAILS 70 Brethren with conferred Grand Rank, entering a Lodge with a Grand Lodge team, may wear Craft Lodge Winter Dress during the approved period and are not compelled to purchase Tails. 71 Tails are not to be of the Morning Dress style of cut. Refer to the photograph of approved Grand Lodge Winter Dress for the required style of Tails. 72 Brethren with conferred Grand Rank, entering a Lodge with a Grand Lodge team, must wear Grand Lodge Summer Dress during the approved period. 73 Grand Officers, other than Assistant Grand Directors of Development, attending Lodge regular meetings as individuals and not part of a Grand Lodge team and wishing to wear Grand Lodge regalia in the Winter dress period, are to wear Craft Lodge Winter Dress.

23 UNIFORMITY OF DRESS 74 All Grand Officers should always be uniformly dressed. Wing collars with pleated panel shirts and studs are not to be worn. 75 For the sake of uniformity, Grand Officers entering a Lodge are not permitted to wear lapel pins, name badges, etc.

GRAND LODGE REGALIA AND SCOTTISH LODGE ATTIRE 76 At no time shall a Grand Officer wear Grand Lodge regalia dressed in Scottish Lodge attire.

SUMMER DRESS 77 In western, central and northern Queensland, where regional conditions make wearing Grand Lodge Winter Dress uncomfortable on Grand team visitations, the Grand Master may authorise Grand Lodge Summer Dress to be worn. This decision will be made on an individual basis and timely advice will be given.

SMART CASUAL, SEMI-CASUAL, CASUAL DRESS 78 Grand Officers are expected to wear the following orders of casual dress: 78.1 Grand Lodge Practices: Smart Casual dress, i.e. long- sleeved shirt, tie, slacks and sports jacket or coat. 78.2 Travelling by plane on Grand Lodge business: Semi-Casual dress, i.e. long-sleeved shirt, slacks, optional sports jacket or coat is suggested as appropriate attire. 78.3 Travelling for overnight daughter Lodge visitations: Casual dress, i.e. short sleeved shirt, slacks or dress , with closed .

24 COLLAR CHAINS 79 The following Grand Officers and Past Grand Officers shall wear collar chains of gold or metal gilt: 79.1 Grand Master 79.2 Past Grand Master 79.3 Deputy Grand Master 79.4 Past Deputy Grand Master 79.5 Assistant Grand Master 79.6 Past Assistant Grand Master 79.7 District Grand Master 79.8 Past District Grand Master 79.9 Deputy District Grand Master 79.10 Past Deputy District Grand Master 80 The chains are of the same pattern, with the number of the stars designating the Rank. 81 The collar chains of the Grand Master and Past Grand Masters are to have nine stars, five on the front and four on the back. 82 The collar chains of Deputy Grand Master, Past Deputy Grand Master, Assistant Grand Master, Past Assistant Grand Master, District Grand Master, and Past District Grand Master are to have seven stars, five on the front and two on the back. 83 The collar chains of Deputy District Grand Master and Past Deputy District Grand Master are to have five stars. 84 The Blue bows on the chain are aligned with the chain.

25 85 The photo below depicts the collar chain of the Deputy and Assistant Grand Masters and District Grand Masters showing the five stars on the front and two on the back.

COLLARET JEWEL 86 The Grand Master, Past Grand Master, Deputy Grand Master, Assistant Grand Master and District Grand Master shall wear a collaret jewel. 87 The collaret jewel of the Grand Master shall be suspended on a Garter Blue ribbon, 40mm broad, edged on each side with gold braid and have the Queensland State emblem positioned in the centre, above the collaret jewel. 88 The collaret jewel of a Past Grand Master, the Deputy Grand Master, Assistant Grand Master and District Grand Master shall be suspended on a chain of gold or metal gilt.

26 COLLARS 89 All other present and past Grand Officers are to wear collars 100 mm broad of Garter Blue ribbon, except for Grand Stewards who shall wear Queensland Maroon ribbon. The collars are to be edged on each side with gold braid 12-16 mm wide and embroidered with an ear of corn and sprig of acacia. 90 All other present and past District Grand Officers are to wear collars of Garter Blue ribbon 100 mm broad, edged on each side with a narrow edging of gold cord or braid, with a gold cord and beehive .

GAUNTLETS 91 In addition to the foregoing, Grand Officers and Past Grand Officers, District and Past District Grand Officers, below the rank of Past District Grand Master, wear Garter Blue gauntlets with a 50mm gold wreath composed of a sprig of acacia and an ear of corn surmounted by the Queensland State Emblem, except for Grand Stewards who shall have Queensland Maroon gauntlets.

27 APRONS 92 Present and Past Grand Master:- Aprons of the same dimensions, ornamented with the blazing sun, embroidered in gold in the centre, and on the edging, the pomegranate and the lotus with the seven eared wheat at each corner embroidered in gold, and a 50mm fringe of gold bullion. 93 Present and Past Deputy Grand Master and present and Past Assistant Grand Master:- Aprons of the same dimensions, with the emblems of office in gold embroidery in the centre, and the pomegranate and lotus alternatively embroidered in gold on the edging, and a 50mm fringe of gold bullion. 94 Present and Past Grand Officers and present and Past District Grand Officers (below the rank of Past District Grand Master and excepting Grand and District Grand Stewards) - Aprons of the same dimensions, lined with Garter Blue, edged with 90mm ribbons of the same colour, each side of ribbon on apron and flap edged with 12 to 16 mm gold braid and on outside edges, 38 mm gold fringe with gold levels. A 50mm gold wreath composed of a sprig of acacia and an ear of corn surmounted by the Queensland State Emblem in the centre. 95 Grand and District Grand Stewards’ aprons are of the same dimensions and braiding but edged with 90mm ribbons of Queensland Maroon and Queensland Maroon rosettes. They have no gold fringe. 96 Present and Past District Grand Master:- Aprons of the same dimension lined with garter blue and ornamented with gold and with blue ribbon. They must have the emblems of office in gold in the centre within a double circle in which must be inserted the name of the District. The pomegranate and the lotus alternatively to be embroidered in gold on the edging, and a 50 mm fringe of gold bullion.

WEARING THE APRON 97 The apron shall be worn with the band at waist level. A neck cord supporting the apron is essential. Refer to the diagram under Wearing The Apron in the Craft Lodge Dress section.

INVESTITURES 98 No past or present Grand Officer is to be invested as a Lodge officer wearing a Grand Lodge collar or chain. The Grand Lodge collar or chain is to be removed prior to investiture and may be carried over the forearm during the investiture. 99 During investiture, the collar of office is to be placed over the head, i.e. worn on the shoulders. The collar is never to be folded and placed on the breast as a method of investiture. 100 Lodge officers are to assume their seat of office after investiture for the investiture to be deemed completed. 101 Grand Officers are permitted to replace the Lodge collar with their Grand Lodge collar or chain once the investiture is complete.

38 GRAND LODGE JEWELS 102 Current serving Grand Officers will wear their Active Grand Officers breast jewel at a Lodge meeting, Grand Installation, Grand Proclamation or Quarterly Communication. The breast jewel is to be worn on the left breast. 103 The breast jewel shall be suspended on a Garter Blue ribbon, 38mm broad, except for the Grand Stewards breast jewel which shall be suspended on Queensland Maroon ribbon. 104 Past or present Grand Officers wearing Grand Lodge regalia will not wear their personal breast jewels or lapel pins.

105 Past or present Grand Officers when appearing in an official capacity at a Lodge meeting or at UGLQ Communications, Grand Installations/ Proclamations may wear their 50, 60, 70 and 80 year Grand Lodge Service jewel, Active Grand Officers breast jewel and Order of Service to Masonry or Order of Service to Benevolence collaret jewel (if held). 106 Grand Officers with additional conferred Grand rank received after active Grand office are permitted to wear the breast jewel of their last office served. The jewel to be worn on the left breast. 107 Where a Grand Lodge Officer has been presented with a jewel to complement their commission with a Sister Constitution Grand Lodge, this may be worn at Grand Installations/ Proclamations and Quarterly Communications only.
