Caw, William McTaggart, - A Biography and an Appreciation, James Maclehose & Sons, Glasgow, 1917, p.263 Mrs McTaggart, née Mary Holmes, died of illness in December of 1884, following the death of McTaggart’s mother in November. Caw writes This portrait was completed posthumously. Caw (p.129) notes ‘The (p.90) ‘her sympathetic and serene nature, forming a perfect foil to his late autumn was chequered by family joy and sorrow.
