Prints by James McNeill Whistler and His Contemporaries is a complementary exhibition to the major retrospective, James McNeill Whistler, on view May 28 through August 20, 1995. Both exhibitions are located in the West Building. "This exhibition is drawn primarily from the National Gallery's permanent collection. Visitors will see fifteen outstanding prints by Whistler presented among works by other leading artists who worked in the rich environment that existed for printmaking in the second half of the nineteenth century," said Earl A. Meryon's views of old Paris helped focus attention on the rapidly changing city during its renovation into the first great modern capital. Contemporary critics compared Whistler's etchings from this period to those of Rembrandt. The graphic contributions of the impressionists are presented in lithographs, etchings, and monotypes by Edouard Manet, Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, and others. -

The Dunes at Wimereux, Normandy Oil on Board
Edmund Blampied (1886 - 1966) The Dunes at Wimereux, Normandy Oil on board. Signed and dated Blampied 1934. and inscribed Wimereux at the lower centre. 204 x 291 mm. (8 x 11 1/2 in.) This appealing picture may be included among a series of a landscapes painted on small wooden panels by Blampied, several of which - including views of Wimereux, Knokke in Belgium, Zefeld in Austria, St. Brelade in Jersey and elsewhere – were included in the Cleveland exhibition in 1941. Blampied visited the small port of Wimereux (or Vimereaux), near Boulogne in the Pas-de-Calais, several times in the 1930’s, often staying with his friend, the writer and journalist Cecil Hunt. The present work belonged to Sir Bruce Ingram (1877-1963), one-time editor of the Illustrated London News (to which Blampied contributed) and one of the most enthusiastic collectors of the artist’s work. In 1967 a selection of fifty-one drawings and watercolours by Blampied from Ingram’s collection was exhibited at the St. Helier Galleries in Jersey. Provenance: The Ruskin Gallery, Stratford-on-Avon Sir Bruce Ingram, O.B.E., M.C., Chesham Michael Ingram, Driffield Manor, Driffield, Gloucestershire. Artist description: Born at Ville Brée in the parish of St. Martin on the island of Jersey, Edmund Blampied began his formal artistic training in 1903, when he was admitted as a student at the Lambeth School of Art in London. He eventually obtained a scholarship to continue his studies, while at the same time working for a number of London newspapers as an illustrator. By December 1911 Blampied had begun working independently as an illustrator for magazines and books. -

Bankside Gallery | 48 Hopton Street | London SE1 9JH | 020 7928 7521 | [email protected] Print REbels Haden, Palmer, Whistler and the Origins of the RE (The Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers) 25 April - 13 May 2018, Private View 24 April 6-8pm Bankside Gallery Then touring to other UK venues in 2018 and 2019 1. Print REbels celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of the founder and first President of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, Sir Francis Seymour Haden. A prestigious collection of works has been brought together to show prints produced by Haden along with those who inspired him such as Rembrandt and Dürer, and his contemporaries, including Samuel Palmer and JAM Whistler. In 1880, the time the RE was founded, artists such as Haden, Palmer and Whistler were considered revolutionary in their championing of printmaking as a creative medium. In mid-Victorian England, printmaking was seen primarily as a means to make reproductions of artworks, and many printmakers only made a living working as a copyist. These printmakers were not eligible for membership of The Royal Academy, as creative printmaking was not recognised as an art form on the same level as painting and sculpture. It was this that prompted Haden to rebel against this and form a new society, the RE. Haden and Whistler are credited with instigating the Etching Revival, an art movement which lasted 75 years. The RE has always been closely connected with the RA, with several Royal Academicians being founding members of the RE along with Seymour Haden, and the 2nd 3rd and 4th RE Presidents being also RAs. -

ABSTRACT in 1919, Immediately Following the First
ABSTRACT In 1919, immediately following the First World War, the English artist Percy Smith produced a series of seven etchings entitled Dance of Death 1914-1918. Contemporaries responded enthusiastically to his inventive treatment of the subject. This paper reinterprets the series in its historical and social context to better understand its original emotional impact. During the war, censorship created a chasm between the home front and the Western Front. Towards the end of the conflict, soldiers began producing writings and visual art that presented an unfiltered image of the war, which an uneasy public began to crave. These frontline accounts brought the daily perils of the Tommies home, and contained what historian Samuel Hynes called the “aesthetic of direct experience.” This quality of authenticity became a prized ingredient in the public’s eye. Smith illustrated his own military experience through the reimagining of a recognized Medieval trope. The series vicariously transports viewers to the front line, following Death as he meanders through the war zone, pausing here and there to either spare or collect a soldier. By conflating the factual with the macabre, Smith expanded the aesthetic of direct experience to expose not only the war’s physical trauma but its psychological toll. Despite the War’s centennial and reinvigoration of scholarship on its art, Smith’s contributions have remained largely unstudied. My research draws heavily on unpublished archival material housed in the Percy Smith Foundation in Cheshunt, England, and early published sources. Abstract Page 7 Abstract Post-war sculpture created by members of the Royal Academy of Arts was seemingly marginalised by Keynesian state patronage which privileged a new generation of avant-garde sculptors. This thesis considers whether selected Academicians (Siegfried Charoux, Frank Dobson, Maurice Lambert, Alfred Machin, John Skeaping and Charles Wheeler) variously engaged with pedagogy, community, exhibition practice and sculpture for the state, to access ascendant state patronage. Chapter One, ‘The Post-war Expansion of State Patronage’, investigates the existing and shifting parameters of patronage of the visual arts and specifically analyses how this was manifest through innovative temporary sculpture exhibitions. Chapter Two, ‘The Royal Academy Sculpture School’, examines the reasons why the Academicians maintained a conventional fine arts programme of study, in contrast to that of industrial design imposed by Government upon state art institutions for reasons of economic contribution. This chapter also analyses the role of the art-Master including the influence of émigré teachers, prospects for women sculpture students and the post-war scarcity of resources which inspired the use of new materials and techniques. -
