PAID ADVERTISEMENT Greek Orthodox Easter Sermon (PALM SUNDAY)

Since Easter is coming i wish to discuss certain things regarding Easter and the customs of our orthodox church.

First of all, as we know, we fast for 40 days. Fasting begins the day after cheesefare Sunday and ends on the Saturday of lazarus. the following week is not part of lent. From holy monday until holy Saturday we observe the strictest fast of the year (with the exception of the pregnant and sick). we do not eat olive oil on any of those days except on holy thursday at noon, because that morning we celebrate the greatest gift Jesus christ gave to humanity: his Body and Blood (holy communion).

Passover in hebrew means "passage" (Pass-over). the Jews "passed" from slavery in Egypt to freedom. we "pass" from death to resurrection and salvation. Because there were disagreements in the ancient christian churches about the date of celebrating Easter, the First Ecumenical council decided to celebrate it on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox. that is why some years we have early Easter and some years we have it later. holy week begins from the Saturday of lazarus because the next day, Palm Sunday, the Jews greeted Jesus christ in Jerusalem as triumphant over death. For this reason, they covered the streets with palm branches and threw their clothes there from where they passed the procession of Jesus. this was a custom when the israelites were welcoming their kings. it was such an enthusiastic reception of the lord that the gospels features noted: "the whole city shook" . For this reason the priests hand out to christians today laurel and palm, in order to welcome our spiritual king into our hearts and in our lives. For that reason, the priest also on holy Saturday morning during the Divine liturgy scatters palm leaves with the hope of the coming resurrection. in the "language" of the church the green of the leaves of laurel or palms symbolizes that hope. on Palm Sunday afternoon, we begin the special services of the Bridegroom (nymphios). According to christ’s teachings, the church is the bride and Jesus is the Bridegroom. it is true that we have taken customs from the Jews. the young Jewish men, at the time of Jesus christ, in the evening before they were married, would go with friends to the bride’s home. they would then take her along with her family, to the groom’s house, where they dined sumptuously, and the wedding celebration began. (see relevant parable of the 10 virgins). For this reason, the Service of the Bridegroom is held in the afternoon. For us, Jesus is the bridegroom of our souls.

in the first service of the Bridegroom we commemorate Joseph, the son of Jacob of the old testament and we read the Gospel where Jesus christ cursed the fig tree. (the fig tree symbolizes the spiritual sterility of mankind.) in the second service of the Bridegroom, on holy tuesday, we commemorate the Parable of the ten virgins. this parable teaches us to always be ready, because we don’t know when our lives will end. we read in that Gospel that christ condemns the hypocrisy of the spiritual leadership of his time and also hypocrisy in general. on holy tuesday afternoon we commemorate the repentance of the harlot. the message we take from this service is that it is never too late for anyone to repent and to come to knowledge of the truth. on the evening of holy wednesday, we commemorate four happenings: (1) the Service of the washing of the Feet of this disciples by Jesus christ, (2) Jesus’ prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, which in hebrew means olive press, because there were many olive trees at that location.), (3) the betrayal of Judas iscariot (“iscariot” in hebrew means fanatic patriot), and (4) christ’s gift of his Body and Blood to humanity. After this service, we receive holy unction to prepare for holy communion and for the healing of our spiritual afflictions.

During the Divine liturgy on holy thursday morning, the priest keeps on the holy Altar a piece of holy Bread for emergencies to be used during the year. that day in our country, we have many beautiful customs. the ladies dye the eggs red, and they bake sweet bread for Easter. whenever you pass through the streets of villages, you smell the beautiful aromas of the cooking. there are two traditions for why we dye the eggs red. At one time, a woman did not believe christ had risen and she said to her husband: “if christ has risen, let the eggs from our chickens turn red.” the next day she found her chickens’ eggs red. lastly, the egg symbolizes the resurrection of Jesus, because from the egg emerges life. Another tradition we have in Greece is that the little children make small wooden crosses decorated with spring flowers, and they go to their neighborhoods, to their relatives and to their godparents singing the song: “today the sky is black, today the day is black, today Jesus was condemned”.) Everyone gives money and red eggs to the children, but the Godparents also give them an Easter candle. on this day, housewives clean their homes to welcome Easter. on the evening of holy thursday, we read the 12 Gospels, which describe the Passion of Jesus. the first Gospel, which is the longest, contains the last words and commandments of Jesus for all christians to follow in all ages to come, and advise us how to behave and how to face the difficulties of this life. characteristic are the phrases of the lord: "... Whoever loves his fellow man, he is the real student of mine ..." and the promise that "... I will never leave you orphans, I will always invisibly be near you ...". he also states: "... there is no greater proof of love, than to sacrifice one's life to save his friend ..." and finally the personal assurance of christ that "... one that is a real Christian, when he leaves this life, he will be together with Christ in order to enjoy the glory of Christ and communion with Him ..."

holy Friday is the strictest fast of the year. the faithful on that day do not cook at home. they only eat fruit; bread, nuts, halvah, olives and they drink only tea, coffee and water (eating of dry food). in some areas of Greece, there is a tradition where they drink a little vinegar to commemorate Jesus’ drinking vinegar on the cross. Also on that day, they do not greet each other nor do they speak. Besides that, some women dress in black. on this day, we have several services in the church: the Great royal hours, the vespers of Apokathilosis and in the evening the Service of the Epitaphios. the Great hours are four: the First hour corresponds to 6:00 to 9:00 Am in christ’s era. At this time, the judgment of Pontius Pilate began. next is the Service of the third hour, corresponding to 9:00 am to 12:00 Pm. At this time Pontius Pilate condemned Jesus. next is the Sixth hour, corresponds to 12:00 to 3:00 Pm. At this time Jesus arrived at Golgotha and was crucified. the last hour, the ninth hour is corresponds to 3:00 to 6:00 Pm. At this time christ gave his spirit "into the hands of the living God." From three o’clock on Good Friday, in Greece, Jerusalem and in all orthodox countries, the bells toll mournfully. At the same time, in all orthodox christian churches, the altar doors in front of the holy Altar remain open for nine consecutive days. that is in memory of the veil of the temple of Solomon: “…the veil of the Temple was torn in two…” (luke 23, 48), “…then behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom…” (matthew 27, 54). this symbolizes that the beloved people of God are not a specific nation, but are the new international orthodox christian church. the first Good Friday was on the 14th nissan (“nissan” is April in hebrew). During the afternoon of Good Friday, we have the Service of the Epitaphios. the Epitaphios symbolizes the tomb of christ. in the old days, the Epitaphios had 33 candles which symbolized the 33 years of the life of Jesus christ. what remained of these candles after burning was used to make amulets for the sailors who sailed in the faraway seas. At some point during the lamentations service, the priest sprinkles with scented water the epitaphios and the faithful. this symbolizes that just as the epitaphios is the throne of christ and is sanctified by his presence, and is fragrant with the perfume of holiness and purity, so the faithful are called to have the aroma of good works and good christian life, and for their soul and body to become the throne and temple of the triune God. After the lamentations the priest together with the faithful take the epitaphios through the streets of the city or village. in our country it is very touching when the epitaphios moves through neighborhoods. housewives welcome it by throwing rose water and flowers, and offer incense from the windows and doors of their houses. in my homeland, Skiathos, where the whole island blooms of lilies, lilacs, violets, daisies and poppies, i can say that the whole island is a vast floating epitaphios in the middle of the Aegean Sea. when the epitaphios transfer starts, church’s bells ring mournfully about the passion, death, burial and his “exit out” of this world. The course of the epitaphios on the streets symbolizes the path of Christ in search of Adam and Eve: "Adam where are you ?" (Genesis 2, 8-16 and 3, 1-13). when the epitaphios returns to the church, bells ringing joyously, because according to the theology of the orthodox church, the soul of christ after his death, went to hades and there met the soul of Adam and Eve, freeing them from the shackles of death and the devil. So, when christ returns to the church, he reverts back to a champion of life, having achieved the resurrection-recall of Adam and Eve and restoring them to their previous society with created and uncreated being.

on the Great and holy Saturday morning, during the first centuries of early christianity, christians were baptized, and for that reason, in the holy liturgy we chant, “As many as have been baptized in christ, have put on christ”. nowadays, we do not baptize on holy Saturday, but the hymn remains in the Divine liturgies of holy Saturday, Easter Sunday and all of Easter week. on this day, in Greece, the relatives of the dead go to the cemeteries, light white candles, bring flowers and a red egg and participate with the priest in a memorial Service.During holy Saturday evening, we celebrate the sequence of the resurrection. it is the victory of life over death. unfortunately many christians do not remain for the Divine liturgy that follows. when they hear the "christ is risen" run out for the food. i know that, whatever advice i give you about this, you may not hear me. Everyone wants to do what he likes. For this reason, i will not tell you my opinion, but i’ll tell you what that great Church’s Father John Chrysostom said: "What are you doing Christian? Christ invites you to dinner with Him and you’re leaving? If someone invites you to dinner, do you leave before it’s over? God calls you and you turn your back at Him? Be careful because Judas Iscariot did exactly the same thing!"

my dear, we do not know if will we be alive and healthy to celebrate again the holy Easter next year, neither you nor i. the resurrection Divine liturgy is the greatest feast of our church. it is the victory of christ and he wants us to participate in the glory of his own. God wanted us to live in the blessed land of America and enjoy many goods that many people lack in the whole world. it is not such a big thing to delay our dinner for an hour. it's a small sacrifice on our behalf and a sign of respect and gratitude for the passion of the lord. I am sure that whoever loves God knows what to do . At the time of the resurrection, all christians and the priest are holding a lit candle in their hands. this resurrection candle symbolizes the human soul. We know that in order to illuminate the candle, it needs fire. So likewise and the human soul needs the Holy Spirit . the fire has three qualities: a) banishes darkness, b) give warmth and comfort, c) and burns anything. these are the qualities of the holy Spirit: a) illuminating the human, b) the Holy Spirit is also called the "Comforter," it gives comfort and strength to a man of God for the difficulties of this life, c) and burns the sins of the people. After the liturgy of resurrection, in Greece, when the orthodox christians return to their homes, they use the smoke from the candles to make a cross outside at the top of the door frame (reminiscent of the practice of the Jews in Egypt). if there is a funeral of a christian from Easter Sunday and for the next seven days, we do not chant the usual memorial prayers, but we chant the joyous resurrection hymns. And at the grave, we do not sprinkle olive oil or wine, but holy water, (an old custom of the kollyvathes fathers of mount Athos), because these days are very special and holy days. we also need to say before the eighteenth century, on holy thursday the orthodox did not take out a cross with crucified Jesus during the Service of the twelve Gospels. we only took out the icon of the crucifixion (in the twenty monasteries of mount Athos, they still take out that icon). this custom of the cross with the crucified Jesus was taken from the roman catholic church. in the beginning, this was practiced only in the western islands of Greece (Zakinthos, kefallonia, corfu). And slowly, slowly this custom spread to all of Greece. Formerly, the Service of the resurrection began at 3:00 Am on Sunday and it lasted until dawn. (this occurs in some orthodox countries even today.) According to the description in the holy Gospels, we don’t know the exact time of christ’s resurrection, but we do know that it occurred before sunrise, while it was still dark. today, for the convenience of christians who live in the cities, the times of the services of christmas, of the Epitaphios and of the resurrection have been changed.
