Te Eastern American Studies Association and the American Studies Program at Penn State Harrisburg are pleased to present the Spring 2018 issue of New Errands, an online journal that publishes exemplary American Studies work by undergraduate students. Seeking to develop the next generation of Americanists, New Errands’ mission is both to provide a venue for the publication of important original scholarship by emerging young scholars and to provide a teaching resource for instructors of American Studies looking for exemplary work to use in the classroom. New Errands is published semi-annually, afer the end of each academic semester. Te goal of this timetable will be to collect and publish essays produced during the previous term, so that they can be made available as quickly as possible for use in the following term. We encourage both selfsubmission by undergraduate students and nominated submissions by instructional faculty. Tey must have an American focus, but can employ a variety of disciplinary methods. Submissions can be emailed as Word documents to: [email protected]. Essays can be of any length, but they must have a research focus. Marcelline Hutton Resilient Russian Women in the 1920s & 1930s The stories of Russian educated women, peasants, prisoners, workers, wives, and mothers of the 1920s and 1930s show how work, marriage, family, religion, and even patriotism helped sustain them during harsh times. The Russian Revolution launched an economic and social upheaval that released peasant women from the control of traditional extended fam- ilies. It promised urban women equality and created opportunities for employment and higher education. Yet, the revolution did little to elim- inate Russian patriarchal culture, which continued to undermine wom- en’s social, sexual, economic, and political conditions. Divorce and abor- tion became more widespread, but birth control remained limited, and sexual liberation meant greater freedom for men than for women. The transformations that women needed to gain true equality were post- poned by the pov erty of the new state and the political agendas of lead- ers like Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.

Among them are JEZ, a shy, sweet guy who is clearly dying to leave, and PAUL, a sweaty Alpha-bro whose super- fragile masculinity is always one rejection away from shattering to pieces. PAUL Fuck her, man. It’s how things are done. It’s just a fucking round of golf! You’d think we were taking clients to a strip club or something- JIM -which we can’t anymore- PAUL -Exactly we can’t even do that anymore because of last year’s Christmas party. This film movement boasts a number of successful women directors, whose films have impressed audiences and film festivals worldwide. This study examines the works of three Iranian women directors, Rakhshan Bani-Etemad, Tamineh Milani, and Samira Makhmalbaf, for their films’ social, political, and cultural themes and commentary while also investigating the directors’ techniques in managing censorship codes that regulate their production and content. Importantly, these women directors must also navigate the Islamic Republic’s Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance’s censorship laws, which dictate that challenging the government’s law or Islamic law is illegal and punishable.
