24 January 2012 AQW 6153/11-15 Trevor Lunn has asked: To ask the Minister of Education to list the schools which can hold the pupil numbers recommended in the Bain Report, broken down by school type. In the Report of the Independent Strategic Review of Education (the Bain Report) it was recommended that the minimum enrolments for new primary schools (Years 1-7) should be 140 pupils in urban areas and 105 pupils in rural areas and for Years 8-12 in new post primary schools should be 500 pupils. It was recommended that the minimum enrolment for a new sixth form in an 11-18 school should be 100 pupils. The Department’s sustainable schools policy classifies schools located within the Belfast and Derry District Council areas as urban. Schools located in other areas are considered rural. Schools which have an approved enrolment number in 2011/12 that falls within the recommended minimum enrolments are detailed below. Report to the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister from the Advocate for Access to Education ‘The Hughes Report’ July 2011 1 1. Introduction In December 2010 I was appointed by the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister to be the government’s Advocate for Access to Education. Over the first 6 months of 2011, I have visited schools, sixth form and further education colleges and universities throughout England and in Northern Ireland to meet students, other young people, parents, teachers, advisers and many others to discuss with them the new system for financing higher education and the best ways of ensuring maximum access to all colleges and universities by all appropriately qualified students. Many individuals and organisations have written and spoken to me, and come to meetings, and all their enthusiasm and input has been much appreciated. It was clear from the beginning how keen people were for the government to lead changes in policy and practice to deliver improved access and widened participation in our colleges and universities. There is no shortage of ideas, and no shortage of relevant experience and good practice. My task has been to try to distil this and come up with recommendations consistent with the brief given by the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister. At the end of this work I went back to some of the young people who had contributed in the previous six months, and asked them questions on some of the issues which had arisen most clearly around the country, and which were most influential on my recommendations. -

Old Boys’ Association Newsletter October 2017 THE PRESIDENT 2017—18 Martin Blake Martin attended Belfast Royal Academy from 1960 to 1967. In his early years he found himself in a geography class taught by the Headmaster, J.W. Darbyshire, who took a dim view of his choice of map colours. Neither was aware that colour blindness rather than carelessness was the cause and so school reports provided painful reading. Fate then played a hand because, as he was young, Martin was permitted to play a second season for the Medallion Shield team. The 1965 team, of which he was captain, became the first Academy team to win a rugby trophy outright. From that moment on, an indul- gent light shone over Master Blake’s head from the Head’s office in the Crombie Building. In 1966 he was awarded the Cricket Bat and the prize for English literature. The following year he was appointed Head Boy and played rugby for Ulster Schools and cricket for Ulster and Irish Schools. After reading law at The Queen’s University, Martin was called to the Northern Ireland Bar and combined a thriving practice with rugby for the Academy Club and cricket for Woodva- le. In 1977 he found romance on the Academy Club tour to Canada and within a few years departed for San Francisco. He became an attorney at law and began legal practice in San Francisco, specializing in civil trial work. He joined The Irish Forum, an American organi- zation dedicated to the peaceful resolution of The Troubles and actively promoted debates among those with whose views he regularly disagreed. -

New bishop-elect called to do ‘Lord’s work’ Bishop-elect Michael Duignan has said he was “shocked” when Pope Francis appointed him as the next bishop of Clonfert, but felt “called to stay and do the Lord’s work”. [email protected] Page !1 July 17, 2019 It was announced on Tuesday that the Elphin priest had been given the role, taking the reins from now-retired Bishop John Kirby who served the diocese for 31 years. Speaking in St Brendan’s Cathedral, Loughrea on July 16, the Athlone native said that religious and laity must work together “shoulder to shoulder” to spread the Faith in Ireland today. “As a people of faith, the waters we are called to traverse today are very different from those of the past. They are ever changing and difficult to negotiate in sometimes old and leaky boats,” he said. “The voyage of the years ahead will require all of us – priests, religious and laity to become, each in our own way, navigators of a new and ever deeper evangelisation. It will require us to work together, shoulder to shoulder, to renew our own hearts in the Faith.” He added that the Diocese of Clonfert has an “ancient and spiritual tradition” that has always nurtured places of prayer which he hopes to visit in the coming days. Armagh’s Archbishop Eamon Martin congratulated Fr Michael Duignan on his appointment, and said he will bring rich experience to bear upon his new responsibilities as a diocesan bishop. He also thanked Bishop emeritus John Kirby for his “extraordinarily generous contribution” to the work of the Irish bishops.
