Sir Goronwy was born at Ystradgynlais on 21 March 1914, the son of David Daniel, a mining official who became a colliery manager. He was educated at Pontardawe Secondary School, Amman Valley County School, the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, and Jesus College, Oxford. At Aberystwyth he received a first class honours degree in geology and distinguished diplomas in anthropology and education. At Oxford, where he held a University of Wales Fellowship and a Meyrick Scholarship, he gained the degree of D.Phil for a thesis on aspects of economics and statistics. In 1940 Goronwy Daniel married Valerie Lloyd-George, the grand-daughter of David Lloyd-George. There were three children of the marriage: Anne, Gwyneth and David. Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru = The National Library of Wales Tudalen | Page 3 GB 0210 GORDAN Sir Goronwy Daniel Papers, A short stint as a lecturer in the Department of Economics at Bristol University, 1940-1941, preceded his entry into the civil service, where he served in the Ministry of Town and Country Planning, 1943-1947, and the Ministry of Fuel and Power, 1947-1955, where he became chief statistician. Other high ranking civil service positions preceded his appointment to the newly established Welsh Office as permanent under-secretary in 1964. By this time he had earned an enviable reputation as an administrator with a deep affection for his native country. In 1969 Sir Goronwy Daniel, who had been made KVCO that year, was appointed Principal of the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, where he remained until his retirement ten years later. His period at Aberystwyth coincided with the post-Robbins expansion of higher education, and he presided over a number of new initiatives at Aberystwyth, including the Welsh medium hall of residence and the Aberystwyth arts centre. He combined a firm international outlook with a devotion to things Welsh. In his leisure time Sir Goronwy enjoyed sailing, and in the 1970s he and Lady Valerie bought a farm at Letterston in Pembrokeshire. He had already been appointed as Lord Lieutenant for Dyfed. In retirement he added to his public offices: President of the West Wales Association for the Arts, the first Chairman of the Welsh Fourth Channel, Vice-Chairman of the Commercial Bank of Wales and of the Prince of Wales Committee. During 1988 and 1989 he chaired an important working group on the reformation of the powers and functions of the University of Wales. Sir Goronwy died at Cardiff on 17 January 2003 aged 88.     ABERYSTWYTH DIGITAL HERITAGE WALK The Women’s Heritage Walk has been developed as part of the Women’s Archive of Wales ‘Century of Hope Project’, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The project marks the centenary of some women getting the right to vote in parliamentary elections, and this walk draws attention to some of the remarkable women who have lived in Aberystwyth during the last two hundred years, and to the man who contributed powerfully to the campaign for the vote. The information in this booklet gives a very brief account of their achievements, but we hope that – especially for the less well known – it will lead to more interest in them. Length of walk: approximately 90 minutes. Ability level: this walk should be accessible to all levels of ability. Programme of activity Based on the campus of Aberystwyth University, Aberystwyth Arts Centre continues to be one of Wales’ busiest and most vibrant cultural hubs. Last year, there were over 400,000 attenders for the Arts Centre’s vast and eclectic artistic programme. This programme included theatre performance, visual arts and new media, applied arts, film and cinema, festivals, music, literature, education/outreach programmes and community arts programmes. With such a diverse and wide-ranging programme it is almost invidious to pick out highlights. However, by mentioning some of the particular achievements, it becomes easier to offer an indicative sense of the Arts Centre’s programme policy. The visual arts and new media programme saw over 50 artists showing work in 2008/09). These included South African William Kentridge, Seven Fragments for George Melies, Day for Night and Journey to the Moon, an extraordinary installation of nine projected works playing alongside each other with one soundtrack. Jordan Baseman, with Inside Man , showed a programme of four projected works with one specifically commissioned by the Arts Centre projected at the entrance to the exhibition.

    I. Beginnings Three of us, Mollie Reynolds, Hannah Harbury and myself were having coffee together, and we saw the wife of one of the members of staff going past. In that pre-feministic age, the custom was to refer to ‘the wife of this-or-that professor’. Anyway, not one of us could remember who she was, and we agreed that that was a laughable situation. You have to remember that only a fifth of the number of students that are here today were at the College at that time; the majority of the staff lived in the town and the professors either walked or bicycled to the College. There were very few houses on Waunfawr, and nearly every College department was in the old building. Mollie suggested that we start a Club. And so we set about composing a letter and having copies made. There was no such thing as photocopying then.
