Cledwyn Hughes, a native of Holyhead, a son of the manse, graduated in law from Aberystwyth in 1937, qualified as a solicitor in 1940, served in the RAF during the war and worked as a solicitor in Anglesey from 1946. After standing twice in the Labour interest against Lady Megan Lloyd George in 1945 and 1950, he captured Anglesey in 1951, thereafter serving continuously until his retirement in 1979. A fervent devolutionist, Hughes was the second Secretary of State for Wales, 1966-1968, succeeding the veteran Jim Griffiths, and pressing successfully to extend the powers and authority of the new department. He was also Minister of Agriculture, 1968-1970, and Chairman of the Labour Party, 1974-1979. Hughes held a large number of offices within the Labour Party and at Westminster. Following his retirement from the Commons, he became the Lord Cledwyn of Penrhos, acting as opposition leader in the Lords, 1982-1992, fighting against some of the excesses of the Conservative governments. Lord Cledwyn was also an erudite, cultured, patriotic Welshman who remained passionately supportive of the National Eisteddfod.     I. Beginnings Three of us, Mollie Reynolds, Hannah Harbury and myself were having coffee together, and we saw the wife of one of the members of staff going past. In that pre-feministic age, the custom was to refer to ‘the wife of this-or-that professor’. Anyway, not one of us could remember who she was, and we agreed that that was a laughable situation. You have to remember that only a fifth of the number of students that are here today were at the College at that time; the majority of the staff lived in the town and the professors either walked or bicycled to the College. There were very few houses on Waunfawr, and nearly every College department was in the old building. Mollie suggested that we start a Club. And so we set about composing a letter and having copies made. There was no such thing as photocopying then. We were surprised by the reaction, everyone was enthusiastic, and I found myself treasurer of this new Club, much to my husband’s unease! This is how Mair Williams described the formation of the University of Wales Women’s Club (or the College Women’s Club as it was first called) in Yr Angor in 1995 on the occasion of its 40th anniversary. She later recalled that this had happened at a College event around 1954, about the time that Goronwy Rees had arrived at Aberystwyth. Mollie Reynolds suggestion that we start a Club stemmed from the fact that she had been a member of a Women’s Club at the London School of Economics where her husband, Philip A.

I expected it to be the result of enlightenment and a pleasant college for dedicated scholars. I was fiercely determined to try to do well whatever it turned out to be. In the summer of 1968 I had worked in the machine shop of Aladdin factory deafened by noise and surrounded by machines to which human beings were bound like slaves, ashen faced and resigned. I had cycled there in the early morning, often from my grandmother’s house after listening to the BBC waking up with Handel’s music followed by the shipping forecast on a small transistor radio. Professor McMahon addressed an audience of over 250 alumni and friends of the University in what was her second public engagement of her first week as Vice-Chancellor. Speaking in Welsh, Professor McMahon paid tribute to her predecessor Professor Noel Lloyd: “Professor Lloyd has made a significant contribution to Aberystwyth University over the 10 Developing years. It is important that we recognise this formally, and personally I would like to thank the him for his warm welcome, his generosity, and his willingness to answer all my questions.” iRevolution Speaking of the University, she said: “It is a privilege and an honour to be invited to lead and serve the University and I look forward to working with the people who have been working to make Aberystwyth such a great place in which to study, work and research.” 11 Business “The friendly atmosphere and the willingness of everyone to work for the University Start-up Week has made a great impression on me.
