The collection comprises printed and manuscript piano music made apparently in Vienna in 1815 (NLW MSS 20658-60C), including works of Steibett, Persuis and Lavotta; a collection of arias, in manuscript, bound, made in Florence, 1816 and later, including works of Rossini, Cimarosa, Asioli, Zingarelli and Maier; and other early nineteenth century manuscript copies of arias from operas by Jommelli and Sarti.

Three items, 1801-2, relate to Robert Ellis (1786-1814), one of the sons of Thomas Ellis, including a letter from him about to set out for India in 1801; the other fourteen items, 1780-96, all relate to Thomas Ellis's legal practice and include a draft petition of Evan Jones of Pwllheli, a convicted smuggler, c. 1780, draft examination of a witness concerning a murder supposed to have been committed by Rev Robert Roberts of Pwllheli, clerk, in 1783, and brief for the churchwardens and overseers of the parish of Edern, appellants, against the churchwardens and overseers of the parish of , 1784, in a case relating to the 'settlement' of the widow of the Edern parish clerk.

The material relating to Dr. T. Rowland Hughes consists of three volumes of press cuttings, radio scripts and book reviews, letters and telegrams of congratulation upon winning the chair competition at the National at Machynlleth in 1937, and certificates granted to him upon winning the chair competition at the National Eisteddfod in 1937 and 1940 (Aberpennar). There are also a few unbound letters of appreciation of his books and radio programmes from Cassie Davies, 1949, Arthur ap Gwynn, 1947, E. Tegla Davies, 1947, George M. Ll. Davies, 1948, Meredydd Evans, 1949, Idris Ll. Foster, 1949, Dr. Ifan H. Jones, 1949, T. Gwynn Jones, 1946-7, R. Williams Parry, 1949, Mrs. Mary Silyn Roberts, 1949, W. H. Roberts, 1949, R. J. Rowlands, 1949, and Emlyn Williams, 1948. The volumes of press cuttings connected with W. Anthony Davies include fourteen volumes of his Welsh column in the News Chronicle written under the name of 'Llygad Llwchwr' 1947-52, 1954-5, two volumes of his 'Llythyr Deheuwr' published in Y Cymro, 1955-9, and several volumes of miscellaneous cuttings. The correspondence includes twenty-six letters and postcards, 1916-23 and 1931, from Eluned Morgan, and smaller groups from Goronwy Charles, Queensferry, 1959 (relating to T. Owen Charles), W. Glasnant Jones, 1937-41, Rev H. Elvet Lewis, 1940 and 1949, Hugh Redwood, 1928-32, Mrs. A. Glamorgan, and died in Scranton, Pennsylvania (NLW MSS 20612-4B). The notebooks contain two lectures in Welsh by Jane Davies entitled 'Deg o'r Diarhebion Cymreig' and 'Llygredigaeth yr Oes', and poetry, 1876-91, in English and Welsh, mainly by Jane Davies (relating to local events, weddings, 'in memoriam', etc.), some of which was composed for competitions at eisteddfodau in Glamorgan.

S P DAVIES & SONS 1971020 Ffynhonnell / Source Mr H P Davies, L1anidloes. Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1970-71 Disgrifiad / Description An account book of Messrs. S. P. Davies & Sons, ironmongers, seedsmen, etc., of , a firm of which the donor was a partner (NLW MS 20602E). The volume, which begins with the apprenticing in 1880 of the donor's father, S. P. Davies, was used mainly as an order book for the period 1880-93 and as a day book for the period 1898-9. Of particular interest are lists of blacksmiths and shopkeepers from all parts of Wales who were actual or potential retailers of scythes for the firm. Accompanying the volume is an extensive cutting from the Express and Times, 23 April 1960, recalling the history of the business from its opening in 1814.

Le Carte after Edward Duncan, and a miscellaneous collection of engravings (Dept of Pictures and Maps). A varied collection of early seventeenth and eighteenth century books (Dept of Printed Books), including Cicero (Marcus Tullius): De Officiis . . . Libri III (Cantabrigiae, 1639) and Terentius (Publius): Fabulae . . . (London, 1641). The collection also includes a rare copy of The Castle Spectre for October 1876 to October 1888 which was published in Aberdeen.

The group consists largely of letters, over 1,200 in number, addressed to A. J. George, often with draft or copy replies. The principal correspondent is his brother William George, Bootle, who describes incidents in the religious and public life of Liverpool (e g the General Election, 1910, the Railway Strike, 1911, the opening of the Mersey Tunnel, 1934, losses by enemy action during World War II) and discusses a variety of business matters of family interest (e.g. the tenancy of properties owned in Beaumaris). There are many personal letters also from his father, Isaac George, from other relatives and from acquaintances in Liverpool and elsewhere, and from members of his churches, the latter often resident far afield. Carmarthen, the donor's grandfather, who died in 1912 (NLW MSS 20562-3E, 20564-5B). Apart from accounts, 1880-9 (NLW MS 20562E), relating to his trade as weaver, they consist almost entirely of his literary works. Some of the poetical compositions were sent to national eisteddfodau, and they include drafts of the winning series of englynion on 'Llais Cydwybod' at the National Eisteddfod in 1885, and an ode on 'Gobaith' and four stanzas ('hir a thoddaid') on 'Cymydog' for the National Eisteddfod in 1886 (NLW MSS 20563E, 20564B). The greater part were, however, composed for local meetings, but it is noteworthy that several poems were sent to eisteddfodau in the Rhondda. Most are on religious or Biblical themes or commemorating local events such as the deaths of important personalities. Two notebooks containing a collection of the poet's works are called 'Perllan y Bardd' (NLW MS 20565B).

Brecon. The deeds mostly relate to the Aberduhonw estate in the parishes of Llanddewi'r-cwm, Llanfair-ym-Muallt and Maesmynys, made up of former possessions of the monastery of Strata Florida, including the grange of Aberduhonw and a ferry across the Wye. There are two leases, 1521/2 and 1532, from the last abbot of Strata Florida. One deed, 1630, includes the Trebarried estate, centred on the parish of Llandyfalle (Misc Deeds Co Breconshire).

Followed by 'The order of proceedinge to the parliamt at Westminster one Thursdaie the eight of Maye 1572 . . .' and the order of precedence in the parliament according to an act made in 31 Henry VIII (NLW MS 20667D). The manuscript seems to be in the hand of a scribe and has a title-page plus 78 unnumbered folios and 10 blank folios; Middle Hill boards; Phillipps MS. 12373. Denbigh, 1652 (NLW MS 20574A). A note on p. 372 reads 'Hic liber fuit perfinitus et perfectus per me Johannem Prichard 28 die Augusti Anno 1652 denique anno aetatis suae 27'. The date '30 Awst [August]', also occurs (p. 368) and the contents of the volume appear to have been transcribed at Llandrillo (p. 372) between 26 July and 30 August 1652. The table of contents near the end of the volume is preceded by these words: 'Llyma dabl or kywyddav a gesclais i Sion Prichard o Breion yn ymyl tref ddinbych yn sir ddinbych 1652. Wedi i scryfennu yn llan drillo y mis Awst yn y ddywededig flwyddyn'. One folio is missing between pp. 192 and 193. An eighteenth century transcript of this manuscript is listed by Aneurin Owen, 1824, among manuscripts then at Pale [Llandderfel] (Trans. Cymmr., Vol. II (1828), p. 418). PEDIGREE OF RICHARD MYTTON OF HALSTON 1971117 Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1970-71 Disgrifiad / Description A pedigree roll, 1608, on five membranes, showing fifteen generations of the ancestors of Richard Mytton of Halston, co. Salop, and his wife, Margaret, daughter of Thomas Owen, judge of the Common Pleas (NLW Rolls 248). The pedigree is decorated with large shields of arms for Richard Mytton and his wife and smaller shields, all in colours, for each of the ancestors, whose names are written in blue roundels. The roll is unsigned, but is undoubtedly the work of Rhys Cain, the herald poet. A membrane added about 1700 continues the pedigree through Thomas Mytton, the parliamentarian, son of Richard and Margaret, down to Richard Mytton of Halston, the grandson of Thomas, and his wife. The roll had until its sale been in the possession of descendants of John Mytton of Halston, the famous sportsman. Nodiadau Schedule Available.

THOMAS ROBERTS & PETER BIRT 1971119 Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1970-71 Disgrifiad / Description A volume in which are mounted sixteen holograph letters, 24 May 1776 - 21 March 1777, from Thomas Roberts, builder, of Cardiff, to Peter Birt, esq., of Armin, Yorkshire, who had purchased the estates from Sir Edmund Thomas (NLW MS 20656D). The letters consist in the main of progress reports on building and construction work at Wenvoe Castle and at the Red House, Cardiff (identified by J. Hobson Mathews in Cardiff Records as the Angel Inn). There are interesting details on the acquisition of materials and the difficulties of labour supply, and also a few small plans. There is also a reference to reports prevalent in the neighbourhood that Birt had not been born a gentleman, with a suggestion that the departure of the Thomas family was resented locally. Besides these letters, the volume contains a posting bill for travelling from Cardiff to Reading in 1790, and an extract taken from the Memorials of William Thomas concerning Sir Edmund Thomas, bart., M.P. for Glamorgan from 1761 till his death in 1767.

Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1970-71 Disgrifiad / Description A group of several thousands of documents accumulated by David Davies (1880-1944), 1st baron Davies of Llandinam, reflecting his Lordship's multifarious activities as a public man and as a benefactor of the Welsh nation. They include papers relating to the King Edward VII Memorial Association, which Lord Davies founded in 1911; the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, of which he was President; the Welsh Branch of the League of Nations Union; and especially the New Commonwealth Movement, which he founded in 1932. Owing to the size of the archive and the exigencies of sorting accommodation it has not been possible to prepare a descriptive account of this important deposit in time for inclusion in the present Annual Report.

Montgomery, and the allied families of Jones, Johnes, and Humphreys-Owen. The manuscript material consists mainly of personalia and letters, the most substantial group comprising over 1,200 letters, 1878-9, 1881-1905, from A. C. Humphreys Owen (M.P. for Montgomery, 1894-1905) to his wife. There are only about thirty letters before 1884, but thereafter they become much more frequent and contain detailed reports and comments on the writer's activities mainly in connection with political and educational matters. There are a few items relating to most members of the Owen and related families from the late eighteenth century onwards. The depositor has considerably enhanced their value by providing explanatory information and details of family background. The twenty-five volumes of printed books include, among others, Richard Bloome: Brittania (London, 1673); William Salmon: Botanologia (London, 1710); A description of all the cities & borough towns in England and Wales . . . with their arms & common seals . . . (London: Printed for Geo: Bickam [17- ]); and Thomas Pennant: A tour in Wales (2 vols. London, 1784). Volume II of the latter contains manuscript additions and corrections on slips and sheets of paper which appear to be in the hand of the author. They were inserted, according to a note at the beginning of the volume, dated at Calcutta 27 October 1788, by Robert Chambers, who received them as waste paper used in packing books sent to him from England. The greater part of the work of the composer is represented, mostly by holograph scores, while in many cases there are also draft scores, printed scores, and sets of orchestral parts. The manuscripts had previously been sorted by the depositor, and the Library was permitted to take photocopies, for reference by readers, of a list of the collection compiled by the depositor in February 1951.
