Greenwald Appalachian State University Introduction Futurama [1] is an animated science fiction comedy with math, science, or programming jokes in almost every television episode. In the same way that history can provide context to mathematics in the classroom, the rich mathematical history of the show’s writers and the stories of their writing motivations can engage students. A combination of comedy references from the show and quotes from the writers is especially effective in helping to alleviate math anxiety and motivate students to learn and connect to mathematics. In this article we will examine numerous Futurama activities for the classroom, including discussions related to the writers and the representation of mathematics in popular culture, as well as activities related to humorous Futurama math references, including computational number theory and geometry. Other Futurama characters then appear and point out that they must kill Simpsons Comics Simpsorama because, due to the time capsule, he has given rise to mutant rabbits which will destroy New New York. The answer is for the Simpsons to go into the future and round up the mutants and send them into space. Written by don minifie Simpsorama is a fantastic Simpsons episode with a very well written storyline and a ton of hilarious scenes. I was completely entertained from start to finish,and I know people say that crossovers are usually cheesy and mediocre ways of bringing two different franchises together,but this certainly wasn't. Simpsons Comics Simpsorama am a huge fan of both the Simpsons and Futurama,they are both created by Matt Groening and the humour is very similar so it didn't feel like they were bringing Simpsons Comics Simpsorama shows together that have little in common. It was truly magical seeing characters such as Homer and Bender interact and I have high hopes that they make more Simpsorama's in the future,I would be perfectly fine if they wanted to make one every year,the same way they do with Treehouse of Horror,it would be a great way to keep Fry and the gang alive and it would be something cool and different for the Simpsons to do.

  • The Simpsons and Futurama
    Chapter 24 Popular Culture in Teaching, Scholarship, and Outreach: The Simpsons and Futurama Sarah J. Greenwald Abstract Subject to thoughtful analysis of the benefits and challenges, popular culture can be an ideal source of fun ways to connect students and the general public to mathematics. My colleague Andrew Nestler and I created, class-tested, and widely shared activities related to the Twentieth Century Fox television show The Simpsons. The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) provides us with an analytic framework to develop, improve, and share our activities. We designed the activities to introduce or review important mathematical concepts and engage students. Later I expanded my interest into Futurama, another Twentieth Century Fox television show. I will describe informal outreach activities connected to both programs, including our educational website Simpsonsmath.com and my interactive lecture that audiences have accessed worldwide from a Futurama DVD. I will summarize the reception of my work by departmental colleagues, the institution, and the mathematical community. I will reflect on how this work has affected students and general audiences. I will also consider the direct and indirect impacts on my career and the unique challenges and rewards of working with popular culture in teaching, scholarship, and outreach.
