Also, I've met with Anne Lewis, Melanne Verveer, Linda Tarr-Whelan and Theresa Loar since they met with you about the proposed teleconference during Beijing + 5.1 fully understand all the issues about UNIFEM, but would like to discuss some creative options with you. Dear Mr. Secretary-General and Expo 2000 colleagues: During our five-city Expo 2000 work trip (in Germany - Hannover, Berlin and Bonn; in Spain - Madrid and Sigtienza) UN Pavilion Technical Director Jan Ralph, UN Pavilion Artistic Director Luis Sarda, Deputy Commissioner-General Axel Wiistenhagen and I successfully addressed virtually every major outstanding issue involving the UN pavilion at Expo 2000. First, I must praise the exceptional receptivity we were shown by every representative of the Expo Authority, the German Government, our private sector sponsors and others with whom we met and worked. Second, I am extremely proud of our presenting team's professionalism. It is an honor to work with such a distinguished, committed group. Among many achievements were: 1. Immediate release of $60,000 by the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation, through the GTZ, which has already been wire transferred, for UN pavilion planning through the end of January and to cover outstanding bills for planning work already completed. 2. Agreement and signature on MOU with commitment for 4.5 million Marks to be available for our use by the beginning of February from the four corporate sponsors of the UN pavilion (Volkswagen AG, Deutsche Telekom, Association of Public Banking Institutes, and RWE). 3. Successful initial meeting with support sponsor Siemens arranged by Expo Authority. Nadine B. Agreement with the Expo Authority and the four primary corporate sponsors that additional in-kind and cash contributions can be granted by other supportive sources as long as not from businesses in direct competition with primary sponsors. 5. Preliminary agreement with Deutsche Post and with the UN Postal Authority in Vienna for management and staffing of the gift shop/postal sales counter in the UN pavilion. 6. Agreement with the Expo Authority financial department and their comptroller on two (possibly three) different structures for paying those who will work on this project. 7. Preliminary agreement with UN Volunteers in Bonn to identify and supervise staff who can serve as guides for the pavilion. 8. Agreement among all UN offices in Bonn to actively support the development of pavilion. 9. Preliminary agreement with Expo Authorities about special arrangements to be made for UN Day, the date that the Secretary-General will visit Expo 2000. * 10. Preliminary agreement with Expo senior architect about plans for construction and installation of UN pavilion. 11. Chose and briefed the international team of contractors who came to Madrid to be interviewed for technical positions in the design and construction of pavilion, all recognized experts in their respective fields. 12. Chose and briefed the UN pavilion manager, a German citizen who has served in the International Participants Division of Expo 2000 with great distinction. 13. Interviewed and briefed several potential candidates for other senior staff positions such as PR director and special events coordinator. Finalist to be chosen soon. During our follow up meetings I can provide more detail on each of these major issues, as well as about many other lesser issues that were discussed and negotiated, ranging from the use of vehicles to housing for pavilion staff. As we all know, we have made a particularly late start for the implementation of the UN presence at Expo 2000. Everyone with whom we met is very pleased that all is moving forward. This includes our counterparts in the German Government - from the office of the Federal Chancellor and the Foreign Ministry down to local officials - as well as our counterparts in the Expo Authorities - from the Commissioner General and the Director of the Division on International Participants down through all department managers. Finally, I would like to commend the efforts of the team working with Under-Secretary-General Kensaku Hogen, particularly Therese Gastaut and Jadranka Mihalic, for their excellent guidance and many significant contributions towards moving this process forward. We will, of course, continue to work closely with all JUNIC representatives, who play a vital role in this endeavor. Although we are behind schedule and must work under extraordinary time constraints to bring this project to fruition, I am confident that this is the team that can achieve what's needed and it is my honor to work as a member of this team. * Of course, the Expo Authorities are anxious to pin down the specific date of the Secretary- General's visit as quickly as possible, since the presence of the Secretary-General affects many other planning procedures and special arrangements. Both Mr. Wustenhagen and I were given information about possible dates from the Secretary-General's office and I hope to final confirm this date this week, for which I know the Expo Authority will be very grateful.
